Mad respect here. I've been in love with the e39 m5 ever since my uncle first picked me up from school with this goat. I'm very lucky that my uncles lets me take her for a wash every week! The N/A throttle response is to die for, the gear box, the steering, the handling, THE SOUND, AND THE POWER. Just got my first big boy job and finally after 6 years of dreaming about owning this car, its finally going to become a reality. I live in Chicago so when I do get my own e39 i'd love to swing by and meet the beemer fam.

dude, i question your bimmer fam since you complain about cupholders. who uses the cup holders in an e39 or most bmws? anyway, most of the stuff you complain about are nothing. things you should worry about in the e39 m5 are motor and transmission.

You've earned my sub, love your videos. A little history on my e46 m3. I've recently hit 167,000 miles 3 days ago. Bought it with 128000, and I too daily drive the car. Most my work done to it was mechanical. So pretty much the vanos, throttle body, brake caliper, driveshaft bearing, differential bearing, and new gaskets of course. Sub frame is now starting to crack just a tad so I'm gonna reinforce that soon lol. Otherwise just maintenance really. My suggestion in reference to your head unit. I believe they make an aftermarket android one that fits nicely with the dash I'd play it safe and grab the antenna and the radio.Cheers.

You're lucky! No cam sensor problems? No carbon buildup? No oil flooded spark plugs and misfire? No whine in the diff? No failed fan in the climate control? I would not own this car without a warranty. I had $18k of warranty work done and traded it for a Prius when the warranty expired. The M5 is a very fun car but after owning one I just wanted a car where you push the button and go... always... without fail. And... the cars are Bimmers.

Get an Android head unit. You'll have android auto, apple car play, google assistant, radio. Basically an android tablet with all the functions of a normal infotainment system. Hell, they even have their own dashcams and reverse cameras and a bunch of other feature you'll get bored before going through all of them. You won't even need your phone no moe. Cause it has all the apps. Just use your phone as WiFi hotspot. Look it up on Ebay and see which one fits. a great investment honestly.

Most of it is the typical E39 M5 stuff. Nothing too bad. You probably already did but if not you should check out M5board.com. Everything you ever want to know about this car can be found there, also places to refurbish your wheels. These are amazing machines, mine’s an early one (1998) and daily driver too, now at 269000 miles. Can’t think of anything else to replace it with, hold on to yours and treat it well!

m5yo Really interested to know how's been oil and fuel consumption. I am looking at an early model like to yours (1998) and I have been wondering if that was a good idea to go for a prefacelift. At 269k is it still running strong and smoothly?
@m5yo
@m5yo 6 жыл бұрын
Nabii Ghemar , absolutely running strong and smoothly. If you don’t care for the facelift goodies (and if you do, you can retrofit everything later if you want) there’s no reason at all to avoid an early car, despite the stubborn rumours the net is filled with for years. What you read and hear about pre facelift cars, all being oil guzzlers is simply not true and by no means fact. My car is exsisting proof of that and there’s more like mine around. A facelift car can consume more oil than a pre facelift one and vice versa so it’s not necessarily so that newer is also better, that’s just hearsay. I could fill a page with reasons why one should not dissmiss an early E39 M5 but the bottom line is you also need a bit of luck finding a really good one. More important and basically key over mileage and facelift or pre facelift is how the car is maintained and treated during it’s life. As for gas consumption, the mileage sucks but that is to be expected from a 400hp car, and quite frankly it’s not one of the reasons you buy this car. In other words, if mileage is a concern, buy something else.
@m5yo
@m5yo 6 жыл бұрын
Nabii Ghemar , absolutely still running strong and smoothly. There’s absolutely no reason to dissmiss the pre facelift cars, no matter what you hear and read. A facelift car can consume more oil than a pre facelift one and vice versa, so it’s not as simple as “newer has the updated engine block so it’s better”, despite all horror stories and hearsay scattered all over the internet for years. My car, with it’s original ‘98 engine, consumes very little oil, about half a liter in 10.000km. Every pre facelift car is an oil guzzler, that’s the general consensus everywhere. My car is the existing proof of the opposite and there are more like it. If you can live without the goodies of the facelift cars (which you can retrofit for the most part later if you wish) then why not, engine wise there aren’t many differences. Fact is though, you have to have a little bit of luck finding a really good one. Even more important than build date and mileage is a proper maintenance history and a previous owner who treated it well, that is absolute key with these cars. As for fuel consumption, that should be a non isssue, the mileage sucks but that is to be expected from a 400 hp car. You don’t buy an M5 for it’s great mileage, if that is a concern for you you should buy something else or not dd it.

You gotta wash the undercarriage at least once a week in winter...I live in NE Pa and the salt and shit is brutal...A 50$ electric power washer does the job...It will help a lot..But as a former German car owner, you always try replacing the cheaper part first, and you can sometimes return it if need be...It can be an expensive game though..Most of these things are much easier to fix on your own than BMW would have you believe

Nice car !!! I have a 2002 M5 with 175K - Things that I found to be updated or replaced... shocks and struts (coilovers transformed the car !!!), aftermarket NAV system, and upgrade exhaust. I have lot's of chips in front bumper and peeling on rims, that's life !!! It seems BMW treated the M5 with excellent engine/drivetrain... And compared to my e39 540, the M5 has never had any oil leaks.

+benedict cruz I've changed the rod bearings in my E39 M5 (2003) at 160.000km (bought it with ~ 30.000km 10 years ago) and they looked kinda good. All 5000-10.000km oil change, no special treatment for the engine (but got a new cylinder head gasket within the warranty at 50.000km). Now it has 208.000km (since 20.000km it's also supercharged by Evolve) and still running fine. Greetings from Germany!

I got a bmw 5 series 523i e39 2000 it’s done 254.000k on the clock the only issue with it was clutch slipping and cup holder and the boot lid hydraulic rods are shot other than that the car is brilliant clutch has just been changed and now I’m cruising doing 70mph without realising 😏 and surprise surprise my animal has no rust except under the car but what do you expect for a 18yr old car other than that does anyone else have a squeaky suspension arm at the rear on there e39?

People are always talking reckless about the reliability issues of BMW. I have a 2015 750Li MSPORT and I have honestly never had anything major fail. Granted I have never missed scheduled maintenance. I fact I’m just now going to take it in for the N63 customer care recall which is essentially an engine rebuild. It’s going in next week and they will have it for about a week to complete the BMW courtesy rebuild. I guess it all depends if you have the money for maintaining the cars. You should not own any luxury car unless you can maintain it as it should be IMO. Especially the higher end models. A lot of hamburger pimps out there want to flex and don’t have the loot to do that. I have a head unit that is for your M5 I can send you.
