Can you please do a follow up video? I'm not confident to attack my buffalo like this but if it bounces back ok I'll give it a go. Also, I'd always read not to smother buffalo when top dressing so was much grass showing after you were done?
@mowtime

Hi Gerry No worries at all. If you are doing a renovation for the first time and want to build confidence than I would suggest to just start with a half reno. This means, just mowing, fertilising and applying a light top dress. If you are worried about mowing low (scalping), than just mow down to a point you can just see bits leaf blade. If your lawn is not level than expect to see some areas mowed more low than other areas. Learn by doing, and I’m sure in know time you will be a pro. Yes, there was after I watered it in. I only showed a couple of seconds of watering at the end. Once you water in for 10min or so, the sand/soil will settle in. This will also show you where you may have not put enough top dress. Hope that helps. Have a great week 😀👍🏻

Wow, with such a small area of grass confined by the pool and fences, shading of surrounding buildings etc I'd just get synthetic turf laid or even just go with decking instead but each to their own. Good on you I hope you enjoy that spot of lawn and it's challenges, I did enjoy the video, thanks mate..

Hi Ross Synthetic turf in this area is know good for drainage when it rains unfortunately. Owners like the grass space for their small children to play on. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for the support.] Have a great weekend. 😀 👍

@@mowtime well you've done a great job, thanks for sharing that. I guess I was judging it on my own circumstances having no kids (and being lazy) etc but I agree that in certain situations natural grass is infinitely preferrable.

Good job 👍🏻just a question if not using sand what else could I use to top dress? My yard is on a slope so every time I top dress it and it rains everything gets wash away . Cheers

Hi Dario You can use other materials such as sandy loam, which is a mix of soil and sand. Generally what I use most of the time. Or some people like to use a compost, but I don’t recommend that normally as it can leave larger debris in the lawn. Unfortunately there is not a great deal you can do with slopes. I would suggest aerate the soil so it can fall into the holes and also light top dressing, and of course trying to do it when there won’t be any rain for a week, which has been tough for people down south. Hope that helps mate. All the best 😀👍🏻

Use a mix of 60 percent lome 40 P sand more lome the better gives more root hold and doses not wash a way as early . Keep your grooming clippings to put on top cover with Hession . Green keeping 15 year's now hope it helps

Interesting that people use a sand/soil mix, I’ve just seen and heard too many issues with weed invasion. Double washed river sand is the shot IMO.

When is the best time to do this? I'm in Brisbane, and my grass has dead patches everywhere at the moment. When I mow a little lower I can see a lot of dead grass that just sits at the bottom

Hi Scott Any time between late August to November/December is best. Due to the heat waves we had a few weeks back in Brisbane, a number of lawns are just suffering from heat stress which could explain your brown patches. Sounds like you need to dethatch your lawn. What lawn variety do you have? If buffalo, you need to be a bit more cautious with that you do in your renovation as opposed to couch varieties or zoysia etc. Thanks for the support mate. Keep me posted with your progress. Have a great day 🙂👍🏻

Can you start this renovation process in January or is it best to wait for next spring?
@mowtime
@mowtime Жыл бұрын
Hi Steve Great question. It depends on your location and weather. It is still fine to renovate if you are getting hot temps, it will just require most likely more frequent watering to ‘settle’ the top dress in and make sure the lawn is growing well to recover. I would apply to liquid root builder pre and post renovation to assist with recovery. Have a great weekend 🙂👍🏻

Although I understand the need to aerate, but with buffalo, as it has stollens and not rhyzomes, is it vital?
@mowtime
@mowtime Жыл бұрын
Not at all. I only aerate if compaction is present or soil profile is very broken down. This particular job was compacted in areas. First time it had got a reno done. But normally no, your right, no need to always aerate with buffalo. Have a great week mate 😀👍🏻

@@mowtimethanks for your videos - great to watch - how do you specifically tell if the soil profile is broken down ?
@allanbriggs807
@allanbriggs807 Жыл бұрын
Where do I start???. That lawn didn't require anything except aeration with a fork - topdress with garden soil or a soil/sand mix - and of course fertilise. NEVER use sand with buffalo. You can level with soil. Always hand water so you can make sure you get 100% spread. Never scarify buffalo - and you shouldn't need to dethatch more than once every 5 years. It frustrates me to see the number of videos where "renovation" of buffalo becomes a major operation using a multitude of appliances. I use a small 18inch victa on my buffalo. - set at the sixth notch (so it is pretty spongy). Fertilise at the end of autumn and again in spring. At the beginning of spring I bring the mower down a couple of notches and fertilise. - Then set mower to the sixth notch again. That's all I do. I've had buffalo in my last three houses and a friend is a buffalo distributor. He told me how to look after it. The good thing about buffalo is that it is so easy to maintain.

Hi Joel Apologies for the delayed response. It doesn’t hurt, but it is not recommended. You really need the growing season to help the lawn recover. If you lightly scalp and top dress, your risk of it not coming back is much higher. You may smother it to much. Hope that was of some help mate. Thanks Ben 😃

Australia would do everyone a favor by renaming your "buffalo grass" St. Augustine. Buffalo grass is the stuff that evolved on the great plains of North America, alongside the buffalo. Australia doesn't even have buffalo and search engines are lousy at differentiating between the two very different grasses.

Not wrong, but St Augustine originated in Africa and South America, so we can't call it that. Maybe we can call it Ausbuf..haha. What you think? Have a great day mate. Ben 👍 😀
