Howl's Moving Castle is partially chaotic because it replaces the main conflict of the original book by Diana Wynne Jones with the entire war plot, which isn't at all present in the original. iirc it's a critique of the Iraq War, showing how meaningless, brutal violence disrupts this idyllic fantastical love story.

Yeah it's a beautiful film but a horrible adaptation and the movies plot and themes are hampered by trying to fit them into the shape of a source media that really didn't support them (tho like you could do an anti war narrative in ingary but not like that) I really wish Miyazaki had just chosen to do something inspired by instead of adapted from. The book also just plays so heavily on western fairytale canon in a way that I don't think Miyazaki tried to respect
@thayet
@thayet Ай бұрын
to be fair, a true adaption to the books would be a trilogy or a 6-hour movie (the audio book is 8h), there is a ton of inner monologues and characters being in the know way before the pov knows, things happening in secret etc. The ghibli version is a perfect compromise for me, but I love both the movie and the book.
@rhymeswithmoose228

@@thayet Yeah, absolutely this. Ultimately Miyazaki was trying to do something very different, and I would say the message of the movie is enhanced by seeing how it diverges so heavily from the source material.

@@TheShanicpower whether the film or Modern Prometheus, what the OP wrote about Oppenheimer is completely out of step with the portrayed events, and history. Oppenheimer didn’t have a dream to make a bomb… it doesn’t show him doodling his bomb ideas on napkins because he’s just _so excited_ about his ideas. And everyone involved knew _exactly_ the devastation it would cause. The wind rises is bad, and the OP eating the crap lie that “oh the Zero designer is just misunderstood” is bad, but to extend that framing to Oppenheimer is *wild*. That film is a stain on the entire legacy of Miyazaki.

Top 4 for me personally are Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and Nausicaa. There's just something magical and beautiful about all of them. I have a soft spot for The Wind Rises. It's very much the tale of a genius who wants to pursue his passion, but the government gets in the way and he's forced to do something he both does and does not want to do. He wants to build planes, that's his dream, his passion, and he wants to build them better than anyone. Government contracts keep the business afloat are an unavoidable evil of many professions. The vibe I got was that he doesn't like that his planes are intended for military use, and mourns that many of them will never return for various reasons. He got to achieve his dream of making great planes, the Zero is his legacy, but it came at the cost of his innocence. Even the man he idolized was forced to take his beautiful civilian planes and make machines of war because the money keeps the lights on and allows him to pursue his real dream of non-military craft. I recall the movie being very polarizing in Japan because they try to sort of bury a lot of bad things they did during WWII or things they perceive to be bad, and Jiro Horikoshi, as the inventor of the infamous Zero, was turned into one of these social pariahs. Even his children wanted nothing to do with his legacy.

the biggest disagreement I have is that I would put Princess Kaguya in S tier, I love the story of a princess who values freedom over material wealth. the animation is also really unique and incredibly beautiful and elegant to me. What timing! I'm in the middle of rewatching a lot of these right now (just Miyazaki's films atm). Just finished Princess Mononoke last night. It's been really interesting to see the progression of Miyazaki's stories starting from Nausicaa. Jumping from fantasy adventure to slice-of-life and back again. I'm going in order of release date, so I haven't gotten to Wind Rises or Marnie yet, but so far each movie has been enjoyable in its own way. My top 3 have always been Howl, Spirited Away and Kiki, but honestly your rankings are all pretty fair for the ones I've seen. Really liked hearing your opinions ^^

@@weedlechu Many of the Ghibli films are truly amazing! I think Totoro being primarily for a children’s audience makes it special for the many adults that do watch it. Like Miyazaki said, he had two audiences in mind for this film. First children, so they can learn to enjoy and play outside in nature, and second adults, so they can reminisce their childhood memories and lives. What makes a lot of older audiences love Totoro, is that it gets them to escape from their frustrating and tiresome lives, where they can feel free and joyful; a feeling that they haven’t felt in very long time.

As somebody who never watched any anime at all before last year, watching all the Ghibli movies (plus Lupin) was honestly one of the coolest experiences of my life. The only one I disliked at all was Howl’s Moving Castle because I couldn’t really follow it. I did skip out on Earthsea, Earwig and Ocean Waves though since they have the worst ratings, but I will definitely watch them soon. My three personal favorites are Nausicäa (brilliant ending with a musical nod to one of my favorite composers), When Marnie Was There (the only Ghibli film to make me cry), and Porco Rosso. You can probably already tell what kind of person I am from those picks.

@@graffitisamurai i dont think you're supposed to agree with the protagonist. the message of the film doesnt support him. there's a lot of parallels to oppenheimer in both his story and character here: where theres this grey morality in what he did, being so blinded by the love of creating planes/science, and the need to fight for your country (as you gotta see it from their perspectives of the time) that the future consequences elude them until after they happened. with jiro, there probably was never going to be another moment in his life to create planes, and if he didnt here, then someone wouldve instead. its tragic in many ways that he had to have been born in this time period, neither being painted as a hero or a villain, just a victim of war and obsession, which to me makes the film very sad and poignant. aircraft will sadly always be used for violence, yet why should that deter people from their genuinely aspirations and dreams with designing them, even if they dont want them to be used that way? people were also struggling naturally to the war, so taking this path was also a better way financially. ive read somewhere before that the film is a reflection on miyazaki's own life and mistakes, which makes it all the more depressing. beautiful film, but one where first viewing doesnt do it justice (i found it boring on first watch)

The Tale Of Princess Kaguya 24. Castle In The Sky 25. Ocean Waves As you can see, I have an interesting taste. My palette in terms of Studio Ghibli is rather mixed.
