All white toenails in racing pigeons: good, bad or neutral?

Are ALL white toenails in a completely blue feathered bird an indicator of a good racing pigeon, either as a breeder or racer?? Is this a desirable trait? Should the presence of all white toenails in blue bars and checks be given ANY attention in selecting racing pigeons?? Watch to learn more.

birds with all white toe nails, are birds considered a classy type of birds. There’s something special about them. But as for my white pigeons with all white toe nails, they haven’t bred me any winners yet 😆
@RFRP

That’s too funny! To be clear, the hypothesis is that the bird must be all blue and have all white toenails, so your white birds don’t need to worry about the pressure of being great breeders 😉

It's worth mentioning that the Smokey gene will also yield white nails and beak on an otherwise self colored pigeon. It's an old show breeder's trick to introduce the Smokey factor to yield "clear beaked" and "clear toe nailed" Blacks for exhibition purposes. Most of the white toe nailed Blues you see tend to actually be Smokey factored, probably more so than the presence of white in the background. As with the white factor, Smokey doesn't create superior performance. What tends to fuel these types of old wife's tales is that a person's best pigeons tend to gradually become the majority of the genetic make up of their line and as a result, their genetic characteristics soon also dominate their loft. Chances therefore become high that the best birds they produce possess those very same characteristics.

Thanks for the additional details Kirby!! I did not know that about the Smokey factor-very interesting!! I need to study pigeon genetics more

@Robertson Family Racing Pigeons It's also worth mentioning that these funny ideas about color work the other way, too. Many breeders believe that certain colors automatically result in inferior performance as a result of possessing some sort of inherent weakness. Yellows and other dilutes are a common target of this ideology, but one rarely sees a good dilute largely because you rarely see them at all in the first place. We can apply this equally to Racers or Rollers. Now funnily enough, the old wife's tale on certain colors being inferior goes so far that when you DO see a good yellow, etc., the reaction of many people is that you somehow just broke the rules by making the good yellow or whatever completely by design by creating it from mostly Blue Bars or Blue Checks. Somehow, when you mix the colors all up, there's an allegation that the color's natural inherent weakness now suddenly no longer exists because "you cheated by mating that yellow to your blue bars!" LOL. The reality, of course, is that it's all about selection. Given enough time and patience, we can make our birds be whatever we desire them to be. We can make them faster, we can give them more endurance, we can make them certain colors, we can give them crests, we can give them frills or we can put little muffs on them, etc. We can do any of that intentionally. We can make them all white toe nailed if we want. We can make them all webbed-footed! It's just selection, but if left to accident instead of design, birds with rare features seem "mysterious" and the superstitions about them, therefore persist. There are, of course, a few colors that might influence inferior performance. Lemons come immediately to mind, as there is a genetic linkage to vision impairment in them similar to what albinos possess. Similarly, homozygous Almonds are often bladder eyed, which is, of course, a physical impairment. But excepting those types of genetic linkages to genuine physical impairments, colors are just colors and have no bearing on anything. I've worked on dilute Rollers for a lot of years now. The first few years I only bred a few good ones because I bred very few dilutes early on. These days, my best ones tend to be dilutes, but it's largely because they tend to now make up 75+% of my year's youngsters. About the only negative observation I've made is that the yellows and cream bars seem to encounter the majority of my early bird of prey losses. But that's not due to a weakness. It's just because they seem to contrast far more with the environment than their red siblings. They seem to get singled out first, followed next by pied-bald birds and then on to the red checks and mealies which at least here locally contrast against the green background of trees and the slate background of rooftops. Long term, I'm moving about 80 miles south. The new place is wide open and mostly rolling grassy hills that are usually quite yellowed by lack of irrigation. I tend to suspect that those yellows and creams will probably suffer far less losses in those conditions as a result being better camouflaged against the terrain than say, a Black.

HI JAMES, EXACTLY, SPOT ON. It just tells you they are carrying pied gene. You never here someone say that is going to be a Great pigeon because it has a different beak colour, so why is a pigeon going to be a good pigeon because it has white toenails. I have had good and bad with white toenails. One the best Pigeons I had was a blue cock with a white beak, but if I saw another pigeon with a white beak, I wouldn't say that it is a great pigeon because it has a white beak. Winning genes count not theory. They are looking well. GOOD LUCK WITH THEM, MY FRIEND 🌟👍
