When Restoring old audio radios and amplifiers, be aware that the foil-wrap type capacitors will have one lead connected to the outer foil which is much more sensitive to inductive pickup from wires near it. Results in an annoying hum or noise.

I've still got a pile of things that may be capacitors that I snipped out of old TV and radio chassis in the 60's. They look like very large carbon resistors. One of the best investments I've made was purchasing a device that identifies components. Plug in a resistor, a capacitor, a transistor or diode for example and it tells me what it is and it's value. I got my device in kit form without a case but they now sell them complete. There's even a version sold with a built in single channel oscilloscope for less than $50 dollars American. Banggood and AliExpress both sell them.

I'm American, back in the 90's I was in college studying music, and the music department gave me an old synthesizer. Recently I decided it was time to work on getting it fixed up (last time I had it on it worked, but had a lot of noise). The synth is made in England, and the power board I'm starting on has Licorice All Sorts caps on it. Can't say I've seen those before!

You did indeed get the figures wrong when converting from pF to μF, you were out by a factor of 1000. When it came to liquorice allsorts, I seem to remember that my capacitance was close to infinite. 😂

The lead length helps identify polarity ..useful if you are doing a recap . Also pcb can be marked incorrectly..check polarity before desoldering Now Pass me the all sorts !!

Strangely enough, the SMD tantalum capacitors are marked with a line on the positive side!

Richard, I pretty sure capacitors have a maximum operating temperature rating, not a temperature coefficient. Great video!

Some do have a temp coefficient, for example ceramic disks, more about this in part 2. I think you are thinking of electrolytics which have a maximum temperature
