This week's Motorweek Retro Review Reaction video is the 2015 Chrysler 300.
As we lament another RWD large American sedan riding off into the sunset, let's take a moment to review and look back.
The 300 is a car that checks a lot of my boxes, it frequently comes up as a "hey... why not a 300?", but it's never risen to be something I'd seriously consider. And here, at the end, I struggle with why.

Remember, Chrysler was more of a competitor to Buick and Acura. Also, why would you want the car to be smaller? This is America. We prefer larger vehicles. That's the American way.

Yeah, I still want this car, even today, with the 15 plus year old platform. It just connotes an elegance and a comfort level that not many cars in this price range really manage to capture. I may be in the minority but I think it still looks great and I wish Stellantis would've kept improving this car (without turning it into an $80k monster).

I purchased a 2013 300S AWD in 2017. It had just under 45K miles. It’s been to KY, TN, and FL multiple times. I now have 170K on the clock. Ive done 2 tune ups and replaced the oil cooler because the filter housing was over torqued and cracked. Outside of that, I’ve done minimal maintenance. I change the oil about every 8-10k miles. Most of the mileage since I purchased it have been highway miles. Probably the best road-trip vehicle I’ve owned

I rented a 300 in 2018, and I enjoyed it. I agree with the Bentley-esque comment. I think it's one of the nicest looking cars designed in North America in the last twenty years. A lot of cars are somewhat gaudy with fake aggressiveness and complicated bits of plastic chrome. The interior was nice and comfortable. It handled well on twisty roads, too.

Jon, good assessment. The Chrysler 300 is one of those cars that you say to yourself: I really like it but it's not for me. My only experience with Chrysler products has been very bad. They're in the shop a lot for major problems. On a bright note, they do have beautiful interiors. They have very high quality interiors for the money. Because I like to drive a lot and keep a car for a long time, I couldn't recommend a Chrysler

I'm still driving my 2009 (Daimler) version of the 300c with the awd and v8. Had it 12 years now, it's got 325000kms and has been a fantastic car. It's rusting now and showing its age, but what a great car it's been. I'm not sure about the modern ones, but the older (pre fiat) ones sure are solid cars. The v8 is epic and really gets this big girl moving. Just a good solid big car. I'm sad to see these go, but have sure enjoyed mine. Chrysler seems to be a lost cause these days with their current corporate decision making seeming to defy logic. But there's no denying they had some great vehicles over the years. My previous dodge spirit served our family for nearly 20 years trouble free and still ran when I junked it. Mopar we will miss you. Stellantis has proper killed you it seems. cheers.

I had a '06 300 with the 3.5l V6. It was a great car! Here in iceland it did amazing in the snow with aggressive studded winter tires and it was rwd. Fine mpg for such a big car and enough power for it's weight. I liked the interior and going on a trip around Iceland was amazing in that thing. I'd love to have the 2015-up Hemi one day. In 2020 when the 🦠 hit and work was slow, I was bored out of my mind so I decided to rent a car and make the 3 hour drive to visit family. They gave me a 300 S. Fuel economy wasn’t bad and it was comfortable enough for the 3 hours I spent each way. The interior is a little behind the times, but that’s me nitpicking. The infotainment is pretty easy to use, I’ve always liked Chrysler’s infotainment systems. My biggest gripe is the 3.6 Pentastar was down a little on torque. Power felt fine once you got going and the engine is smooth, but it shows it’s age at times. It seems like a good value if you’re looking for a comfortable sedan under $40k. It won’t last 400,000 miles like a Toyota Avalon, but it won’t matter for most people who trade up every 5-10 years.

I love my 21 300 Touring L. Get a sports appearance package that blacks out everything and gives you a SRT front bumper, and you'll have some muscle look. And yeah It's aged a bit but the tech isn't, and it Drives just incredibly Refined. Plus they have the ZF 8 Speed Tuned perfect. All the Shifts are quick and precise, with a nice kick from each shift. The Oil Cooler is known to go, but a lot of people just act pro active on it, because other than that it is a good Engine that will last. The first and second Generations can also develop a Engine Tick, but the 3rd Generation Pentastars supposedly solved that. And the Gas mileage is incredible in considertation to the power you get. In town I get around 22mpg, and on the Highway I'm always around 30.

My mom has a 2011 300 3.6. It has a littl3 over 120k mi. 2011 was the first year of the new body/redesign. We bought it used it 2014. It's been a GREAT car. The 3.6 has been very reliable and offers good power in such a big car. The only complaint is the trans. It's been reliable and trouble free, but it's the last year of the 5 speed Mercedes unit and it just doesn't match up well with the Pentastar engine. You can tell they're worlds apart as the 3.6 is MUCH more modern than the trans that was used and developed mainly in the 90s. I own a '14 Charger 3.6 with the ZF 8 speed and the difference is insane. The Charger feels like it has 50 more HP even though it's the exact same engine and power output. The old Mercedes 5 speed definitely holds the 2011 300 back. Besides that, I have no complaints. It's been dead reliable except for a bad alternator that left her stranded once, but that was taken care of under a recall and Chrysler covered the repair cost and even the tow bill. She wound up getting in a moderately severe accident and the car held up really well, killing those false rumors of poor Chrysler build quality. Airbags didn't go off and it was fairly simple and inexpensive to get body work done to it. Overall I'd rate the car a 10/10 and it's been really the perfect car for the most part. Even though it's pushing 15 years old, I'd hop in it and drive it across the country. It's really a shame that as this car aged, FCA/Stellantis paid less and less attention to it. I feel like it could have been kept fresh if they actually put the effort into it, but I get that in recent years sedans have mostly gone the way of Packard and Rambler, but maybe they could have leaned into the "sedan-ness" and touted it as the last of an old breed. Idk. As a lifelong Mopar guy it saddens me to see the direction of the Chrysler Group under Stellantis. I get the feeling that Chrysler and Dodge won't exist in a few years and that's a damn shame.

I have always liked how these look especially the first versions. However reliability isn't good according to the Finnish survey. We have mandatory yearly full car safety inspection and these are almost bottom of the list. If the car is not fixed in a month after the inspection it's banned from the road. So that is real concern.

Another great video. I agree with you on a lot of things and respectfully have some food for thought. I will agree that FCA didn't know what to do with it. I think Maserati getting a version of the LX caused FCA to hold back on luxury and the move to push Dodge into hardcore performance pushed Chrysler away from performance. Sergio stated Chrysler was mainstream yet they dropped the base models(which never should have been there in the first place in my opinion). The challenge is they were trying to do better than the badge engineered job Daimler did but they lacked the vision to make this distinct. The Pentastar started development at the end of the Daimler years, continued during Cerberus years, and was finished during the Fiat years. It has a hengst oil filter housing so there is German influence for worse in my opinion. The car is very German with the suspension and transmission. (This next part I'm not trying to be rude or antagonistic and I agree the engine is not bulletproof I am trying to figure out the root of the problem to see if what he's running into is a common failure point that can be fixed or if something else might be the problem.) What does your mechanic say is specifically failing on the Pentastar? Some weaknesses (such as the plastic oil filter housing, plastic connectors for the coolant hoses) have aftermarket parts made from metal that can be used to bulletproof the engine. From our experience the engine has been fairly trouble-free we have numerous vehicles with the engine and have north of 100,000 miles on a few of them. Also, which vehicles is he specifically finding failures in because there are different versions of the engine such as the version the Pacifica and 2015 plus 200 that has a extremely high compression ratio for a port injected engine versus the versions used in the Grand caravan, Avenger/200, older Wrangler, etc? If it's the PUG version used in the Pacifica I would not be a surprise by that I don't have a lot of experience with that version. (I'm not trying to be rude on this next part that this is food for thought) It's also worth noting that as a long term Chrysler owner, the lesson I have learned is in order to have positive ownership experiences, you need to make sure your mechanic is competent enough to work on Chrysler vehicles. Many ASE certified mechanics I have worked with Don't know what they're doing concerning Chrysler. I can't tell you how many times I've been told incorrect things like that oh the coolant is red in your LH car therefore it is using Dex Cool. That is false. The LH cars used g05 coolant with a red dye which is similar to what Ford was using during the same time but it was a yellow color. GO5 is an HOAT coolant versus Dex Cool is an OAT with two EHA additive. They are not compatible, They cannot be mixed, and they cannot replace the other. When maintaining a Chrysler cooling system, use OEM parts only to play it safe. Also I have had ASE certified mechanics who wanted to put universal transmission fluid in ultra drives which are usually dexron based. The best way to destroy a ultra Drive is to put anything dexron-based in an ultra Drive. There is one acceptable fluid, ATF + 4. There is a very long list of approved manufacturers of ATF + 4 but the bottom line is it must be ATF +4 and not universal fluids. While Chrysler's had some bad designs, from my experience, This is a big reason why Chrysler has a bad reputation is owners do not know what they're doing and the mechanics for whatever reason don't know what they're doing either. If you stick with OEM with the fluids, that will resolve a lot of problems. I speak from experience. Again, I'm not trying to be insulting towards your mechanic (he may be the greatest mechanic who ever lived and he may be better than any mechanic I ever have dealt with), he might be great with other manufacturers but when it comes to Chrysler you got to know what you're doing because Chrysler doesn't do a good job of communicating things and you can't just look at colors and make assumptions. The simple solution is stick with OEM. It cost a few bucks more and that is cheap insurance to have a reliable experience. Some things like the plastic oil filter housing will break if it's over tightened and they need to use a torque wrench to make sure they get it exactly right to make sure it doesn't snap. The solution to this is to buy either the metal oil filter housing from dorman or a spin on adapter. If you were to buy a Chrysler 300 you might want to check around for someone who's an expert on Chrysler who doesn't hate That engine Who knows the secrets of having reliable experiences with it (which from my experience is not hard to accomplish). Out of all the engines on the market today, that is one of them that I'm the least worried about. No timing chain driven water pump, no wet timing belt, no cylinder deactivation, no gasoline direct injection, no plastic valve covers or plastic oil pan or electric water pump or heated thermostat. The bottom line is the engines that we have these days are extremely complicated. I'm worried about all of them but out of them this is one I worry about a lot less. At least the problems can be fixed. It's possible to get a dud but I know way less examples of duds on these compared to a lot of the other engines out there. I have to say that I really take exception that they call it a couch on wheels. These are the people who made the snide comment about the New Yorker and dynasty being soft cars for soft people. They have a very specific taste in car which is they want extreme focus on handling. From a historical perspective, this is a sports sedan. Drive a LeSabre then drive this. Drive a New York or 5th avenue then drive this. Drive a Lincoln Town car then drive this. This is a sports sedan. It's just not as extreme in it as BMW is. In my frustrating search for a comfortable car I tried it and it didn't work for me because The seats are too firm and the suspension is too firm. The Lexus ES has the same problem. There's nothing made for the traditional luxury audience. The whole direction the traditional luxury brands have gone is in the luxury sport direction to try to take the market back from the Germans and it is failed. What's more is if you tell people about the problem you're having and trying to find a comfortable car the first thing they recommend is a Cadillac. I've sat in Cadillacs they are not My grandfather's Fleetwood brougham by any stretch of the imagination. They are sports sedans or sports crossovers. So the very people that would be their ideal customer myself won't buy them because they're not comfortable. And the people that wouldn't buy them because they weren't cool still think of them as an old person's car. Their comment about this being a couch on wheels is what ensures people keep thinking of them in the old terms as opposed to what they are today. They'd be better just embrace the way people think of them so then they at least please someone. In terms of styling, I never have been the biggest fan of these. Styling and ride wise I would rather own an LH car or a New Yorker 5th avenue on the K platform. I'm surprised that you considered this to be too big because It's a few inches longer than in an accord. This is not nearly as big as the LH cars it replaced. I'm also surprised that you consider the mileage to be too poor The rear wheel drive version being 30 to 31 for a V6 is pretty good from a historical perspective and 27 is still respectable but if you're used to a four cylinder it's simply not going to be as good as the reality. While some of the competitors like the ES 350 do have better mileage some of that is because of the complications of the engine with the dual injection and (going off of memory from what the car care nut channel discussed) copious use of plastic on valve covers and non-traditional technologies. Not to mention that the Toyota 8 speed hasn't been exactly bulletproof and doesn't have the best shifting feel to it. I hope you're able to figure out the car that works for you just as I'm trying to figure out the car that works for me. I'm open to whichever manufacturer can produce the comfortable car that has reasonable reliability.

I had high hopes when the Daimler Chrysler merger was announced - Chrysler design with Daimler engineering. Alas, it didn't pan out. All Chrysler got for its trouble was some leftover Mercedes platforms, which I think the current generation 300 and Charger are still derived from. I think Chrysler tried to dress up a muscle car and call it the 300. A bodybuilder wearing a tuxedo is still a bodybuilder and a muscle car with a veneer of plush is still a muscle car. If memory serves, you essentially have the same engine choices as with the Charger. IIRC, the Pentastar shares a design flaw with the Hemis that the valves are too far up from the oil sump, such that the oil pump has difficulty generating enough pressure to properly lubricate the valve train at low RPM. If you're always ripping down the highway, heavy on the pedal, no problem (do change that oil religiously, though), but city driving and lots of idle time will burn these motors up.

I agree on the Daimler merger. At the time it was sad Chrysler had fought all that time just to merge with someone else; I mourned the loss of independence. But being able to look back I see it as a monumentally bad decision that undermined their lineup and quality, and led to decades of comically bad decisions.

@@UncleJoeLITEWith the BMW Rover thing, Rover was the culprit. BMW handed immense amounts of capital to Rover, set up a deadline, and told them to get to work. BMW, unlike Daimler, actually wanted Rover to thrive. Rover then developed the 75, Mini, and started development on other models, but stupid British Leyland management that destroyed predecessors of Rover were too complacent in developing the expected model lineup. BMW quickly took the reins once they realized Rover wasn’t getting anywhere, but it was too late. I’m glad BMW saved Mini and sold off Land Rover to someone more responsible. MG Rover was then given a second chance for survival by BMW who gave them £1 billion and spun them off on their own, but the same phoenix four who so arrogantly ruined BMW’s earlier attempt to restore Rover, burned through the cash without still developing any new models, and the rest of the cash they stuffed in their pockets, leaving MG Rover to fall into the hands of the greedy Chinese. It’s just a sad story of how Rover had everything going for them with BMW giving them chance after chance, but here we are today with no Rover. BMW was pretty honorable in how they handled Rover.

When the AU car industry self-died [~2015], Chrysler had still done d-squat to the 300, so rather than booming, it got old, died ugly & alone. Anyway, Rangers & Hiluxes have it all in 2024, big sedans are dead forever imho. Thanks Jon

Chrysler and its parent company Stellantis are shifting their focus to electrification and hybridization, and the successor to the 300 is expected to be an electric vehicle. " We had one that was bought toteled from an insurance company, when my friend put the new engine in as part of the rebuild, we were getting over 35 miles per gallon, I suspect he may have forgot to put some pollution equipment back on the six cyl engine. Never could get the engine light to go off though and was always a hassle when trying to get it inspected. We would reset the computer and the light being off would last just long enough to get it inspected. This went on for years. Very comfortable vehicle to drive.

The Chrysler 300 is still listed on Chrysler's website. The Chrysler 300 is outdated as it hasn't been updated. Now their are no sedans in the Chrysler and Dodge lineup. The Charger and Challenger have also been discontinued as Stellanis plans to electrify them

Chrysler ended production of the 300 earlier this year even though it is still listed on Chrysler's website. The car was outdated as it had not been updated with the latest tech. Now there are no sedans in the Chrysler and Dodge lineups. Stelantis said they are going to electrify the Dodge Charger and Challenger

I think the front and the rear looks pretty good. The profile is too much 2000s Cadillac. They should have focused on aggressive muscle car. There’s definitely a void in the market for affordable power cars that are functional for daily uses.

Dunno, I reckon Chrysler took the best US design of the early 2000s [by far], then progressively microwaved it, until finally it died looking a bit blobby. =) But yes, I'll miss big sedans even tho' I never wanted one myself. The presence can't be matched by any SUV.

Well said. I love that Chrysler was trying with the car... but how can you look back in history at some of the amazing 300's and come up with the brick style.

A sedan and not a family car. Mopar muscle as usual.

I love the 300 for its overall presence I notice them because I love Chrysler. the 300 doesn't stand out. I have a 64 New Yorker Salon and every time I get that car out I hear from someone that their grandparents or parents had one, it was their first car, and it was better than a Cadillac at the time. Back in those days, you had Cadillac, Lincoln or Chrysler. My new yorker stands out and turns heads everywhere I take it, with the 300 I feel it will go down as another block car. Not sure if I can post a link in here but this was an interesting 2011 Chrysler commerical talking about style... and it it is a 63-64 300 that for sure has style. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ftGqoqSZprmUe5s.html

As Australian the 300 was going to struggle as Holden n Ford cars were affordable, even performance brands HSV n FPV were performance breed. 300 should name couple performance 300 as Pacer n Charger from the start plus sold ute version too this given Chrysler more sales. But every Australian knew the 300 was oldest ugly sister that couldn't dance but with enough make-up she might win over.

No idea why anyone would've bought one of these when the Chevrolet SS is also available for the same or less. Other than AWD.

Let’s be honest. It’s an ugly brick. Nothing elegant or classy. The 2004 300M looked a lot nicer.

Chrysler doesn't have good quality and reliability. You need to do good maintenance for Chrysler/Dodge vehicles to keep working and not break down. Mechanic Scotty Kilmer doesn't like Chrysler products. You can see him talk about on his KZfaq channel
