This weeks Motorweek Reaction video is the 1987 Jeep Wrangler!
I won't pretend to be unbaised about this one - I love the Jeeps of this era and I owned a Wrangler!
Crude, harsh, and slow, but a dramatic improvement over the previous CJs, I miss what the base-levels of this Wrangler offered - inexpensive, low, and fun.

I had a 88 S model. It was just over $12,000 new! Drove it all over the country and loved it. It did have a few quality issues but the amazing warranty always took care of the problems. I totally agree about a stripped down version.

Yeah something about simplicity… I had an 88 Comanche pickup. It had the 4.0l and ac. That’s it. I loved that truck. Best vehicle I’ve ever owned

This was an era where Jeeps were one of the cheapest new cars you could buy. I love this era also, I preferred the square headlights.

I like these YJ Wranglers. I get why the purists were upset with the square headlights, but other than that, Jeep did a good job of keeping in line with the heritage. Even with the square lights, it's unmistakably a JEEP. Somewhere around here I have a really high quality die cast model of the '87 in blue. One of my favorite models when I was a kid by far. One of these with the 4.0...*chefs kiss*

I had two Jeep XJ Cherokee as my Jeep experience. Two of my brothers had 6 cylinder manual transmission YJ's. My 93 year old father is still driving his 2000 Wrangler TJ. Jeep needs to make a simple, stripped down Wrangler. I'd like to see a stripped down, no nonsense, 4runner fighting Cherokee as well

The Wrangler got a better engine in 1991 with the 4.0 liter inline six from the Cherokee (180hp). That worked better with the automatic transmission. I would still prefer the 4-door Wrangler(2007-present).

I've a 2004 Jeep TJ (Wrangler) Straight Six, 5-speed manual, (and AC),trick intake and exhaust-sounds like my Dad's old stockcar. I love it. gonna keep it -if i won the Lotto for 10million, I'd do a rotisserrie rebuilt and keep it. (Also buy a plane-I fly-and 3-4 motorcycles and a few houses for my daughters.) Simple fun little truck. Cheers from the Pacific West Coast of Canada.

I agree 100%. I grew up knowing that jeeps were affordable no frills vehicles. I went to look at one the other day and I was appalled at the prices and all the extraneous stuff they added to justify the prices. I might just try to find a classic YJ to restore and enjoy.

Darn, how’d I miss this one? I like the old Jeeps because they were the real thing. The Daimler ones weren’t very exciting and the Fiat based ones are moneypits. But anyway, I really like the Jeeps made by AMC and Chrysler before Daimler. Those were the days.

The Wrangler came out after the Suzuki Samurai debuted in 1985. It was much better than either the Samurai or the CJ-7. It's too bad a V8 engine was never made available at that time. I'm sure the 5.7 liter Hemi V8 would probably fit in this 1987 Wrangler.

Thanks Jon. Wranglers have sold here [AU] in small numbers for a long time. In 2016 Jeep sold 12,690 vehicles, but by 2023 it was only 2,669. But it's still getting worse, such is Stellantis here. In the first quarter 2024, Ram & Jeep scored the 2nd & 3rd-largest % sales slides in Australia vs 2023, behind only niche brand McLaren. Sorry I never have good news lol. Cheers.

That's astonishing how much they're dropping. I'm prepping for a WTH is wrong with Jeep video, and I was shocked to find their sales in the US have dropped 30% since 2018! I have my theories, but I'm curious why you think Jeep's sales are falling Down Under?

Born in 74, I had a couple of CJs in my teens/early twenties. At the time the YJ seemed way too neutered. I agree a basic topless 4x4 would be nice to have in today's marketplace, but is there sufficient demand?

I don't always agree with you-maybe it's a Canadian/American thing-but I really like your channel. This one we see totally eye-to-eye, (except for I like the inline six), and yes it's fun to drive and yes it's not s sports car (I've got fast motorcycles for that) but this is like being driving a pickup as a teenager-feeling driving my TJ/Wrangler. The simplicity is it's best point. And steel wheels are just cooler. (Mine has mags, but ...well okay.). Base models are really more fun. Good video, Jon.

I have an XJ I say all jeeps should have square headlights A dude in a YJ tried to trade me for his YJ in similar condition to my XJ If it had a hard top I might have done, but it being it was winter at the time no way with a ripped up soft top I have the 4 bangger and a 5 speed, I don't feel I need more power I also have a 2001 Toy Taco 4 cyl TRD stepside I still drive my Jeep often
@1heavyelement
@1heavyelement 21 күн бұрын
the 4 cyl was grossly underpowered, it was made to satisfy gov mpg regulations. the 4.0/4.2 was a fantastic setup, although slow in its own right it had great torque for 4 wheeling. the inline 6s were extremely reliable.
@444mopar
@444mopar 11 күн бұрын
I had the 4.2 in mine. It was a dog and bad on fuel. Eventually I replaced the carb and distributor with aftermarket discarding the emissions controls that were giving trouble and it became much more driveable. Eventually the peugot 5 speed locked up internally and I replaced the engine/trans with something better.

I also had the older CJ for a while. This was a much more civilized version. The purists screamed about ruining Jeeps, but for every one of them that complained, ten normies bought the new version. If you wanted something that could go anywhere there were a dozen companies, including Jeep, that would happily sell you any upgrades you wanted. It was funny hearing them talk about poropoising at the end. Mine almost bunny hopped under the right conditions. Though it was probably due to some of the mods the previous owner installed.

Now buyers seem to want fancy and technology filled ex's. Most drivers don't have a clue how to drive a true 4x4. Soccer moms are the main buyers of Wranglers. Never to see a mountain trail or a desert runner.

Complaining about Wrangler's riding too high today is just mind boggling. Do you know why they are? Because everyone was putting lifts on them and Jeep figured out that's what customers wanted. That's like complaining about the C8 Corvette being faster than the C4.
@AllCarswithJon
@AllCarswithJon 22 күн бұрын
A huge part of my complaint is simply seat height. The newer jeeps I have to "hop in" to the seat. As I recall my last Wrangler it was a "step in" height. Same with the Explorer and MDX. I have to hop slightly into the Explorer, but an MDX (and the RDX for what it's worth) are among the most comfortable height vehicles I've ever come across.

@@AllCarswithJon do you not understand that you are in the small minority of potential Jeep buyers who want to sacrifice ground clearance for ease of entry? It seems like such an odd complaint.
@jfruser
@jfruser 22 күн бұрын
@@Noneofyourbusiness2000 The YJ was able to decrease ride height while increasing ground clearance over the CJ-7. Since then, base model jeeps have only gained .7" GC over the YJ while increasing ride height by several inches. It is a bad compromise and done to make the wrangler FEEL like it has better ground clearance than it really has. It is the jeep equivalent of those artificial exhaust notes/tones some makers use instead of bending metal to produce a better note and better performance. Besides, the 99/50 rule applies to Wrangler buyers: 99/100 never go more than 50 yards off paved roads.
@Noneofyourbusiness2000
@Noneofyourbusiness2000 22 күн бұрын
@@jfruser where are you measuring that ground clearance from because that's not correct? You measure ground clearance from the lowest part of the vehicle, which is the axle. The base YJ came with 215/75R15 (27.7 inches) tires. And the base JL comes with 245/75R17 (31.5 inches) tires. You can even get the JL Rubicon with 35s. The largest factory tire on the YJ Renegade were 30s. That comes to a 1.9" increase in height from the center line of the axle on the base model and 2.5" on the Rubicon. The difference is even bigger when we look at the distance from the center line of the axle to the bottom of the pumpkin, the lowest part of the vehicle: YJ Front Dana 30 - 5.125" Rear Dana 35 - 4.625" Dana 44 - 5.875 JL Front Dana M186 - 4.1" Dana M210 - 4.5" Rear Dana M200 - 4.4" Dana M220 - 5.0" This results in the following ground clearance. YJ (Base) Front Clearance - 8.725" Rear Clearance - 9.225" YJ(Renegade) Front Clearance - 9.875" Rear Clearance - 9.125" JL (Base) Front Clearance - 11.65" Rear Clearance - 11.35" JL (Rubicon) Front Clearance - 13.0" Rear Clearance - 12.5" In total the base JL has 2.6" (30%) more ground clearance than the base YJ and the JL Rubicon has 3.375" (37%) more ground clearance than the YJ Renegade. As far as your criticism of ride height, you are not considering suspension travel. The YJ only had 6" front and 7" of rear suspension travel for the base model and Renegade, while the JL has 14.7" front and 16" rear of travel for the base model and 16.7" front and 18" rear travel for the Rubicon. The vehicle needs to sit higher for that massive amount of extra suspension travel. The JL Wrangler doesn't ride higher for appearance. It does so to improve off-road performance, and a factory JL slaughters a factory YJ off-road.
