Prefer the live version, but just one of the greatest instrumentals ever - such a fantastic guitar riff - great chord structure.

I was told that Dickey walked out of rehearsal to have a smoke in a neararby graveyard and he sat down next to a headstone that was for Elizabeth Reed and he started jamming and came up with his version of what became "In memory of Elizabeth Reed" and he took his idea back to rehearsal and played it for the band and they liked the concept! Thy turned it into the song! Thus the song was born!

There's another story out there. A young Mr. Betts and his girlfriend ventured into a graveyard to engage in some serious naughtiness in private. For no particular reason, the event occurred at the tombstone inscribed with the words "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed." The encounter was apparently a memorable one (for Dickey at least) and he used the title for a later composition. Whatever the truth is, the world got a timeless tune out of it.

Every girl in college I knew picked In Memory of Elizabeth Reed as their favorite Allman Bros. song. (Lots of guys love it, too, including me.) Does anyone know who Elizabeth Reed was?
@jamesclifton2049
@jamesclifton2049 9 жыл бұрын
Elizabeth Reed was the name on a grave in a cemetery where they used to practice in the early days. (or so that's the story I've always heard)
@robertkett3754
@robertkett3754 9 жыл бұрын
james clifton The band used to practice at Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon, where Duane and Berry would both be buried in 1972. Elizabeth Reed Napier was indeed buried there. When Dickey Betts couldn't use the actual name of the woman he wrote the song for, the gravestone provided an alternative for the ages.

Yes, he is :) I took that pic form the Dickey Betts Great Southern's lp inner sleeve. Don Johnson co-wrote a song on that album and is credited for a 'background vocals' job. No trace of Ricardo Tubbs, anyway.
