I cry bull. I’m reading the book and Tripitaka is barely relevant except being the damsel. Virtually the entire book so far is the growth of Wukong.

A lil' info : -She's at chapter 55, the arc with PIF and DBK starts at chapter 59 -Chapter 56-58 is the 6 eared macaque arc -This book has 100 chapters so theres a long way until Red finished the summery series

Yeah, it's an adaptation of Journey to the West. Dragon Ball, pre-Z, was also originally a sort-of parody of JTTW.

That would look like a puppet show with how blocky the style is and it would be lovely. Although, chinese kids saw the jttw thousand times so would it work so well if they tried to copy what chinese cartoon/movie production do while being randow foreingers that haven't heard about Monkey King before?

It stands for "Journey to the West." It's Chinese Folk lore that has people like Monkey King, the Demon Bull King, Pigsy, Sandy, etc. There's more characters in the show from the book than I thought honestly.
