I loved this! How timely! I got a broken-off, rootless Alocasia stem with 2 leaves, for free, from a large hardware store 2 or 3 weeks ago. It looked like someone had put it in their cart and knocked if off the pot, or maybe they tried to lift the plant out of the display tray and snapped it. I looked for signs of root rot but the bottom was not mushy and the leaves looked firm, so I asked if I could have it. The cashier looked at the stump, shrugged, and said, "Fine by me! Good luck with it." I brought it home, stuck the base in rooting hormone, and put it in damp pon. I checked it yesterday and it has 1 healthy looking root, 2 nubs that might be the beginning of more roots, and the 2 leaves it came home with are still on! I'm very hopeful that it'll survive. It was not labeled, but it looks like the Amazonica ("Polly") I already had so I believe that's what it is. I didn't use heat or covered it with a humidity dome, but I have it in my warmest bedroom, in front of an east-facing window, surrounded by many other plants, and with a humidifier nearby. Thank you for showing the progress of your experiment over the course of a few months. It is very, VERY helpful when content creators do that, especially when they share what worked and what didn't. I've seen other videos on which you've shown similar updates, so in appreciation of the extra time and effort compiling such a presentation takes, I subscribed a minute ago. Thank you!

I planted some corms from my alocasia Amazonica in a prop tray months ago and completely forgot to continue checking them, check led in after watching this video to find they have rooted really strongly in to the soil and 4 have sprouted. So pleased and surprised.

I think the air layering didn’t work because the soil dried out too quickly. I use sphagnum moss and keep it damp and mix in some horticultural charcoal to help protect the roots from rot.

I also deconstructed my Frydek. I took corms, stem cuttings a couple top cuts and 2 rhizomes. So far have lost the stem cuttings and one corm to rot but everything else is still alive . So far... 2 of my corms each have one leaf and one is working on its second leaf. It's fun!

The soil mix may have been to chunky for the frydek to hold onto moisture long enough for the plant to use it before it dried out. I have had my silver dragon in an orchid pot with perelite in 2 10 gallon aquariums top to top to make a terrarium 😅 ever since i saw your video on straight perelite i tried it because the leaves were starting to get brown tips, since then it pushed out a new leafe and I propagated 2 corms in perelite and sphag moss in a little grey yogurt container lol I'm very jealous of your coopria. Great video very informative i learn so much watching you, thank you for making videos.

Thank you for this very interesting and informative video. Bought a dragon scale a few months ago from Walmart, it promptly died from root rot. But I kept it in hopes it might come back, your video reminded me to pull it out to check the roots and search for corms, no hope for main plant but got several corms. Hauled out my heat mat and planted them in a small orchid pot, hopefully in a few weeks some will root. Love your videos.

Thank you for this most informative video. I'm new to these plants and just acquired 3 of these at a very low price from a supermarket here in Victoria Australia. I've relocated from a much warmer place in Queensland and finding the range of plants in this colder climate very new and interesting. I have sadly left many beautiful tropical specimens behind. So am grateful for what I'm discovering here. I've been searching the internet for info on how to care for these plants. Your videos have the most detailed info compared to many others. I now hope to successfully grow these beautiful plants thanks to you. ❤

Cool experiment. Very interesting too see. I bought a small Alocasia Pink Dragon, which had spidermites and very small roots. I removed all soil, showered it, treated for spidermites and put it into a glass of water. In two weeks, we have new roots :-) Didn´t rotted, but is growing a new leaf and importantly new roots. I´m planning to put it in semi-hydro pon very soon (once the roots are sufficient). I tested the same thing on small calatheas before and worked well - in two weeks everone has new roots on the way and no rot issues (I change the water 2x a week). In 4 weeks most of them are ready for semi-hydro.

Also I think it was the pot you put the frydek in. I’ve noticed if a plant has recently died or struggled in a pot and you don’t sanitize the pot and give it a break, the next plant you put there will die/rot too.

Thanks for the great video! I wish so much that I could post you a picture! 3 or 4 weeks ago, maybe longer…….I had my Frydek in dirt, I guess it was in dormancy. Anyway, It looked just like the one on the right side of your video, except no green coming out of the top at all, and a few scraggly roots. So I decided to put it halfway in a glass of water, and back to the sunroom it went. It now has several different green things growing out of it everywhere and it looks ready to plant but nothing coming out of the very top. So today I scraped the top part off (it was kinda mushy) and back halfway in the water it is. I think if you saw it you would be surprised. Sorry I don’t know the terms for all the “green things”, even after watching your video twice. I’ve come this far, hate to kill it now or get rid of it…….it is so interesting, but not sure what to do…..sorry this is probably a goofy post😂but you seem to really know what your doing. Thanks for any suggestions…

Still need help PLEASE!!! Didn’t know how to send pic…..Anyway, I figured out I was working with a STEM. So, it’s been in water, at a slant (rock under it). I finally have at least 4 different places where baby leaves have come thru, up and out of the water and growing, nothing out of the very top. Other roots and things are sprouting out pretty much all over the stem. I guess each one of these leaves on the stem would be a plant if separated. But could I plant the whole stem in dirt sideways with leaves going up and it grow? Thanks for any help….

Judging by the rate of growth on that Alocasia stem in the water maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea to grow it in semi or straight hydro.

Interesting video. I’ve ‘almost’ lost my Polly due to spider mite (I think). It had all the signs so I was pleased to find some corms and took the main plant out of the soil and cleaned the one last leaf before transferring to leca. The leaf eventually died and the corms are sitting in perlite but nothing has happened yet. It’s been at least 4 weeks so I’m thinking I should peel them then move them under a grow light. I have never done this before so please let me know if I’m doing something wrong. Thanks for sharing all the steps of recovering some growth on your Alocasias.
