This product is a HARD pass for me. $1000 for 4 packs of non-legal proxies? I'm honestly insulted that they would even ask if I was interested in that.

The best part is not even a year ago they said “we cant print a black lotus token for Garth, One-Eyed because it’s too close to the reserved list.” And today it’s “never mind you can buy them from us now in the Prox Box.”

Wizards knows that if you have been collecting magic for ~30 years, you’re probably 40-50+ in age. Wizards wants a cut of your retirement money.

The 30th anniversary product feels like an NFT. The cards you get are unusable in the game, they are highly priced, the main reason to buy one is for the sake of buying one, and you can get the same product via your printer. And also like you said, "Why buy this when I can buy actual Alpha/Beta cards?"

The thing that pisses me off the most is that I can already buy these proxies for $5 each. It's literal madness. This is pulling the copper out of the walls

For the community aspect, we have a good one here. We don't think wizards are gods or care about us. However, there is a group of us that meet up every Friday, and just hang out. That is what community means to me.

This is like pure profit. There’s no cost in design like there would be if it was a new set. It’s the most expensive new cardboard that they’ve ever sold.

You have to give credit to WotC some credit. The “This product is not for you…” thing is now their motto apparently.

I've always known WotC (and every other company) isn't my friend and their #1 goal is to make money. But this is just such an absurd, maniacal middle finger to the entire playerbase, gutsier than anything I've seen any other company do (though I'm sure many other have happened). Fuck you, give us money. Such a bold, bald-faced statement was enough to make me not buy Magic cards any more. If they want to sell me proxies for $1000, I'm just going to print my own from now on. Love the game, hate the company. I completely agree that it will sell out instantly despite not having an obvious target audience. And that will just encourage them to do this more and more. I hope it crashes and burns, but I highly doubt it will happen.

It's one thing not to be my friend. It is quite another to regularly go out of your way to remind me that you can't stand me.

The original artists didn't even know this was happening. I have spoken to three of them personally. They don't know any details about any potential royalties they may be due or how their contract structures play out. In a few cases, I was told that WoTC altered the art by cropping it, and then even photshopping the artist signature back into the cards. Hasbro's BLUEPRINT 2.0 plan they announced is quite obvious from here on out. Not only is the reserved list potentially abolished, but WoTC said "fuck it" and have reprinted art from original artists, which is something they have not done before. This is all to please Hasbro shareholders, as MTG is about to be Hasbro's first billion dollar brand. Thus, they are willing to take the risk of lawsuits versus the benefit of the revenue they may potentially generate.

Possibly the target customers are content creators who will open the packs for their videos and earn back their money on ad revenue (I'm sure Wizards are aware how popular pack opening videos, especially vintage, have become).

Opening MTG sealed products is always a gamble but this is just absurd.

This is Magic's "Death of Superman" moment. Is it going to sell out immediately? Sure. But, that happened with the "Death of Superman" in comics as well. The problem isn't whether or not it has value at the flash in the pan moment, but whether it holds value over any length of time. The Death of Superman and that era of comics nearly killed the comic book industry. I wish I could tell you I was exaggerating, but I'm not, and if you do any research, you'll see all the supporting evidence. Marvel was on its last legs in the late 90s, early 00s, because the early 90s had crashed the market so ridiculously hard. DC was the same way. When art and commerce mix, there's always the temptation to let commerce run everything. And then the artistic elements leave, and the audience goes with it, and commerce says "well, it was doomed to failure." The collector's booster things were fine, even if fans got grumpy about it. But this? For non-playable chances at possible old cards for exorbitant prices? You're right - it'll probably sell out. But it's also going to drive lots of people away, and encourage lots of people who *play* Magic just to proxy the cards and not buy... well, anything. Wizards has proven they don't have any respect for their audience any more, so when it's so easy to proxy cards these days, the easiest move is for the highly entrenched player to say "y'know what? I don't need to buy a box or a case anymore - I'll just buy singles, or, hell, I'll just buy knockoff proxies. Because if Wizards doesn't have respect for us as their customers any more, the road goes both ways. Why support a company that keeps spitting in my face and telling me to like it?

After jumping the shark with Dominaria collector with legend cards, this is their answer. I just love where you said "this is the beginning of..... a new era." Was the pause to fight saying that this is the beginning of the end lol. My stores will probably carry a limited amount. However I am going to avoid this like the plague.

I've got the feeling this is not just a pricing experiment, but also an experiment on whether there is any talk about breaking of the reserve list, and if not, they might just do a Vintage Masters.

You really hammered down the crux of this whole matter. The reason everyone hates this product is because it's the final wake up call that to Wizards Magic is about profit and profit only. It was already obvious, but now people can't cope through denial anymore. They now have to come to terms with this reality and the future impact it has on their beloved game. That's what they're actually upset about.

The way I see this going down is roughly this: product sells out, whoever actually wanted it keeps it, all the rest show up on eBay as people try to flip it. But because nobody actually wants the product, the listings don't sell and the price crashes. Either way, Hasbro makes bank.

I think most people don't fully appreciate the blessing that Rudy is to the MtG players "community". The guy offers no-nonsense insight into the business behind (whatever remains of) the game -and raises financial awareness way beyond the sole confines of TCGs, all of this for free and with a reasonable measure of humor. Quite evidently a bright guy, at that. Sure, he benefits from the traffic but, as we all know, he'd generate as many views and interest in his store by just making superficial 2-5 minute clips every other day. A one-hour dissertation is not exactly self-serving on KZfaq, so thanks man. Appreciate the time and effort.

Love the long-format talking videos ! I agree the bet is on the company now not the product. If they are making 900/ea they’ve flipped the 10x’ing from the consumer side to theirs and make $ upfront. I do think this would be a much better product if it was a complete set like the previous collectors - but then likely not as desirable? Let's be honest guys. Hasboro saw the Chinese counterfeiters making $$$$$ on $3 fakes and decided to get in the game and get their cut. But instead of charging a reasonable price, they charge a premium because "These fakes are ok."

I have to agree about the first take sounding like a good product. $1k for a re-release of a CE 2022 sounded like a nice (albeit pricey) product. I might’ve ponied up for a full collective product at that price point. Then I found out it was packs of randomized cards.

Hmm, let's do some calculations: Wizards states that there are more than 6K (obviously less than 7K) WPN stores in the world and more than 400 Premium WPN stores (obviously less than 500) the will give the regular one 1 box and the premium 3 boxes. Let's say there are 6.2K wpn and 450 premium wpn stores, that means they will give 6.2K + 1.35K A 55K boxes of 30th anniversary to them for free Now the question is how many will they make for direct sale - the same 7.5K, 10K or more than double 20K boxes, or less than 7.5K?( which doesn't really make sense, but let's add it as an option) So there may be between 10K and 30K boxes made. So, is it that limited of a product and worth the investment especially for the price of $1K? For me, something to be really limited must be less than 1K in the world, don't know about you! l think they are trying to confuse us with the high price, to make us think that it is really limited when in fact there will be at least 10K boxes made! Please, let me know what you think!

We have been seeing indie startups really gain ground and grassroots support in most aspects of nerddom and I think that is going to continue going forward. Collectibles ultimate value is underwritten by this meeting point between emotion and authenticity. If people feel like their emotions are manufactured on purpose then the suspension of disbelief is ruined for them

Rudy, never underestimate how much impact the "little guy" can have. The exact same thing happened to me in sports administration. Long time follower of your videos. You have always been a sound voice of reality on how the real world of big $$$ works.

If collectors edition goes down I'll be buying more, they are beautiful cards without the Beta price stamp, same printing plates as Beta too.

I agree… I doubt it will have any negative impact on the original cards. I’m glad I was able to get a good percentage of the original ABU and 4H cards I wanted when they were still (somewhat) affordable. There’s still a bunch of stuff I never got a hold of but I got like 75-80% of the stuff I really wanted. So I take that as a win.

Personally I think the shock comes from a naivety that people legitimately enjoy the game aspect of Magic and don't want to accept that Wizards doesn't see it that way. I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting Magic to be cheap or a game inherently, there's a lot of fun you can have. However, it is and has been clear that collectibility is Hasbro's focus, and it's just difficult for those who have invested so much time, passion, and effort to accept that they game they loved and wanted isn't going to be that anymore.
