How to Draw or create realistic textures as part of learning how to draw and drawing basics and fundamentals. This tutorial provides simple but effective tips on creating texture by comparing Pen and Ink with Graphite Pencils and Charcoal.
Each has its unique qualities and limitations and can be used to create an infinite variety of textures to depict many different kinds of surfaces and materials: fur, wood, scales, wool, carpet, hair, rocks, stone, tiles, sponge, etc. Its really up to your imagination :-)
Note that the same principles apply whether you are drawing or painting texture or whichever medium you use to create art texture or texture in art.
See my other tutorial videos for useful tips, tricks, techniques on drawing :-)
Materials:
Charcoal: General's charcoal pencils (Hard, Medium, Soft)
Graphite Pencil: Staedtler graphite pencils (HB, 4B)
Pen & Ink: Sakura Pigma Microns (005, 03, 08)

Thanks again for another great tutorial. I really appreciate that you take time to provide us with very detailed instructions, yet broad enough so that we can experiment using your techniques. I can't wait until your book comes out, and I'll be watching for the Kick Start announcement when you get to that point. I have to tell you that I had an early Christmas when I saw that you were going to be one of this year's Strathmore's instructors. Can't wait for that either! Thank-you again for all the tutorials you share, and have a wonderful, safe and Happy Holidays!

Hello Alphonso, you're very talented and inspire me very much as an artist and I admire you. I'm 16 years old and love art very much, however lately I have been going under stress such as school and I've been starting to fade away from drawing. I desperately want to master drawing and become an artist I the future but for some reason every time I pick up the pencil I just start drawing badly and feel like I can no longer draw. I don't know if this has to do with an artist block but I desperately want to get my passion for art again nd don't know what to do and need some advice :c

Hey there Alphonso! I have a question ( unrelated from the theme of this video though.)which I hope you can answer. I find this sort of program online for beginners, which says that one should learn perspective first ( 1-2-3point) and then move on to anatomy/figure drawing. I find this great, since my goal is to write my stories and illustrate them, and for the past 2 months I've been messing around with perspective. But I'm not sure if I should stick JUST to perspective until I'm good at it, or doing other stuff too simultaneosly. ( like shading the cube I just drew in perspective or having days when I'm focusing on perspective, and other days when I'm studying anatomy) So my question is that, when you started learning how to draw, did you focus on one specific area and then move on to the other, or you did more things simultaneosly? ( sorry if my question is too long, and I know that it's really hard to create this sort of balance when someone is learning to draw, but i feel really overwhelmed, thats why the long comment..:D) Thank you!
@alphonsodunn
@alphonsodunn 9 жыл бұрын
mindfucks5000 no i didnt stick to one particular thing, but I were to do it all over again, there are certain things I think would be best to address early, like measurement, shading, mass, just the basics. and have projects to apply them :-)

In this tutorial you showed how to create texture with graphite and charcoal. My favorite medium is graphite and charcoal. As you said graphite and charcoal do smudge easily, but I like the kind of effects I get when I use graphite and charcoal. So you teach chemistry. I hope you and your family will have a very Merry Christmas and a very prosperous New Year. ...on earth as it is in Heaven (Mat.6:10). Thank you Alphonso for your basic drawing fundamentals.

Raihaana Azmi Yea as luisdiazart says..You can use virtually anything with a really soft texture to blend, a piece of tissue, napkin, cloth, just dont use your fingers as tempting as it is.In this video I used a paper stump...not a tortillon, tortillons are similar but a little harder so they dont blend as smoothly. they are both made of paper but on is made from the pulp and other from paper wound up into a pointed roll. They have their unique uses...I will discuss them at some point. Hope this helped :-)

Unfortunately many people just teach the way they were taught without exploring new ways to present the same knowledge, and sometimes there are people who really know their stuff but unable to relate it to others in a way that they can get it clearly. But thanks so much for sharing that, I just hope alot of art instructors would be more adaptive to new ways of presenting instruction

Could be scales it could be rocks it could be on the one point perspective that everything else is done in. If that's not paid attention to consistently the evolution is ruined. Looking at the front of that block number three it's okay but when the top is considered and the perspective forgotten the illusion is broken. If consistency is is the buzzword is the key and consistency must be consistent and consistently applied. Just saying

Man, I know u get this too much, but, D*mn you are so good at, not only drawing, surely not only at chemistry too, but at teaching you are incredible. I have read a lot about value but never understand really how to apply it with pencil, but just by watching this video in the back ground I get it. Thank you so much.
