Wired2fish’s McKeon Roberts loves fishing small and inaccessible waters from the shore or out of his kayak but recently purchased a boat to expand his fishing to new waters and different bites. After a year of fishing out of the setup, he provides a thorough and experienced-based walk-through review, covering down on the boat and key accessories and why he chose each product. *Full product listing below.
Affordability, small waters accessibility, and sized to fit into his garage directed Roberts toward a 16-foot aluminum fishing boat. While the featured 1650 Lund Angler comes in a single (SS) and full windshield (Sport) model, Roberts chose a tiller for maximum boat control and usable floor and storage space. Despite its modest size, the v-hull design mated with a 60hp FourStroke engine makes the boat plenty capable of running bigger waters.
Roberts put much of his budget toward boat control equipment and fish finders. He discusses how he uses transom and bow-mount trolling motors and his single shallow water anchor. Three Humminbird HELIX fish finders (networked) provide sonar and mapping capabilities typically found in bigger boats, making this setup an understated fish-catching machine.
With all these accessories comes the need for power. Roberts upgraded the boat to a 24v trolling motor configuration, which requires two 12-volt batteries rigged in parallel. He chose lithium-ion batteries for the space and weight savings; significantly less weight equates to more hull lift and better boat performance. A single group 27 lead-acid battery powers the rest.
Lastly, Roberts discusses some optimization accessories. A T-H Marine KVD Kong Electronics Mount provides a solid and rigid solution for the sizeable bow fish finder with the flexibility to raise it for enhanced visibility. And he upgraded his stock 3-blade aluminum prop to a 4-blade stainless steel model for faster hole shots, better bow lift, and overall boat control.

I have a 1993 Lund Pro V 1660 tiller. I dont have a trolling motor on the rear yet but I installed the new Ghost trolling motor at the bow. I run my boat on big water like Mille Lacs and also smaller bodies. The deep V keeps me dry. The small lakes that I like don't allow gas engines. The Ghost pushes me 5 mph when needed. I installed a recessed pan for the foot pedal which I recommend. The pan incorporates a cup holder and 3 slots for tools like pliers, forceps, and scissors. I run the ghost on 36v. I installed 3 AGM's and a 4 bank charger in the front storage compartments. I use a Lowrance at the bow and rear console because I like to touch a spot on the map screen and command the trolling motor to that spot with a simple touch. I'm installing the Active Target transducer before opener. I also like the Mega imaging of the Helix so I have an SI unit next to my lowrance at my rear console. I do all of my mapping with Navionics on my phone. Because I have 3 mapping systems I was able to compare. I use smartstrike on my bird to find new spots. I use the map on my lowrance to tell my trolling motor where to go. But I use the Navionics for all navigating on the water. This way I'm not wasting valuable screen space and I can keep SI and Active Images full screen.

I really like that boat. Sometimes you just gotta do you. It doesn't have to be the highest end water Ferrari, it just has to work for what you need it to do. Some people might call your boat 'unconventional', I would call it 'user friendly'. Shoot, my boat is a restored 1997 Bass Buggy pontoon with a few extras added in and she's exactly what I need.

great video walk through, thanks for sharing. one note on the charger- from what i know about the 345pc line - they are not optimized for lithium batteries which require higher charging voltage and have different top and disconnect voltage. This charger will charge a lithium battery but it will not charge completely because it’s designed for agm/lead acid batteries which max out at a lower voltage when fully charged.

Great video! I just picked up a new 1775 pro guide, and have the same console as that. I'm wondering how you mounted the ram balls, and where you ran the wires to your units? I have a single helix 10, and I'm trying to figure if I need extra support under the tray, and where to make a hole for the wiring. Thanks!
@Wired2Fish
@Wired2Fish 2 жыл бұрын
I had my boat professionally rigged for clean installation by Andy at Fish Lectronics in Nisswa/Pequot Lakes, MN. I have the two HELIX 10's mounted and the console supports them fine. The RAM ball bases just bolt into the console. You'll have to drill holes for the appropriate bolts. For the console, there are pre drilled ports underneath that lead to the battery compartment in the stern. Thanks for watching the video, Terry! Enjoy your boat!

When mounting the Helix units did you just drill through the top of the console and then run the power through the side wall and to the cranking battery? I just bought the same boat and am going to mount my own units but was not sure if getting water through the top would be a issue if drill through the top of the console.

Beautiful setup ! I’m looking to run a 60 hp tiller on my boat and was wondering when running at 1/2 , 3/4 or full throttle , how is the steering ? Is it manageable , is there a lot of torque on the engine making the steering hard to handle ?
@Wired2Fish
@Wired2Fish 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Vito. Steering depends on a few factors. First of all, there is a tension lever on this particular motor that will either lock the motor in place or make it very loose. I've found that if I find the sweet spot when trimming the motor it will also bite down hard and lock in place which makes for very controlled handling. So really you can make it as tight or loose as you want and I wouldn't say there is too much torque. Gets up on pad nice and easy and then off you go. Trim the motor according to how weighed down your boat is or what the wind and waves are doing.

Hi Sunny, I'll let McKeon address your question from his vantage point (Ryan here), but we've run the Renegade at Wired2fish for several seasons, and it's an excellent boat. Tons of storage, stability, and a shallow draft for skinny water.
