In my quest to make sure the Suzuki M109R makes it to 100K miles one day, I have to keep it in tip top shape. This time around, had to deal with some cable management. Surprisingly, I got 38,000 miles out of the stock clutch cable. Rather than go back with another brand, decided to go back with the stock oem cable. Cable management is important people, check your motorcycle cables!

I saw an adventure rider who routes his spare clutch cable right next to the existing one. Coil the ends up, tape them off to protect it from the elements and you're good to go. If the cable goes in the middle of nowhere, you're not spending a long time finding your cable in your luggage, if you brought one, and then installing it. Just release on both ends and pop the new one in, adjust and vroom. :)

Brandon, after 15 seconds I think I know where you’re going with this 🤣. Today, I was suppose to sell my M109R. I pulled in the clutch cable and it snapped. With the buyer in front me 🤕Wow. I’m grateful it didn’t happen with him Or me on the bike, on the highway at high speed. So fortunate. Have a blessed day.

The exact same thing happened to me with my 109 (07 also) at about 40k. I actually prefer the cable to gradually fray; gives you those crucial moments to get home/to safety. When replacing my cable, I disconnected from both ends and tape the top of the new cable to the bottom of the old. Pull from the top and it self routes to the lever. I wasn't removing more than one panel lol!

I had my clutch cable break the other day on my 2006M109R while I was riding. I was about 100 miles from home and fortunately it broke while I was moving. After initial panic about what to do that far from home I decided I was not too far from the highway and figured I could coax at home. I had to time my stoplights very well I was able to upshift and downshift without the clutch as long as I rev matched. I did have to make it through a few intersections with a series of right turns and U-turns in order to clear those intersections I was able to make it all the way home for about five stoplights and multiple stop signs without ever coming to a stop or killing the bike. Thank you for showing me how to change the cable I will change that next week.

I gotta say, it looks like you had the classic result of never lubing your cable ends (barrels) and the sockets that they sit in. Perhaps you should consider it. It takes a total of about 5 minutes (pull the two cable ends out of their sockets, clean both them, and their sockets, then apply some white lithium grease to the areas you just cleaned. reassemble and viola! You're done. Making it easy for your cable ends to rotate within their sockets will go a looooong way to preventing the cable strands from becoming "work hardened" and starting to fray. Just my $.02. Anyways, good video, thanks...and lube those cable ends every time you change the oil!

I usually put some wd40 on the cables each mth or two. It helps them stay lubricant up. Since mine is a 2007 I was thinking of having all the cables changed at the dealer or other repair shop. The motorcycle has only 7700 miles for an 07 and garage kept, but I'd feel safer having them all changed.

You're actually doing the opposite. If something has a oily residue on it, WD-40 will remove it because it's a solvent. It's okay for cleaning out grime and rust but after it dries, it would be a good idea to use something like silicone spray (cheap) or Tri-flow (expensive).
