Same! That’s actually the one that I ended up using for the cover, which is hilarious because this whole sheet was just sort of random off the cuff doodles. That one, even, was a last minute pose experiment that almost didn’t happen, too. Lots of wonderful random happenstances!

people having sennelier and then realizing its all about the LAYERING is NOT NEW. and the more you layer the more pow it gets. i dont think i have tried another paint that gets so much life in layers, and yes the drying shift in the first layer can be disappointing but it more than makes up for it later. acrhes blocks are way way way overpriced. just get some full sheets and make your own. you already have all the tools needed for that. you might need to get a bone folder but otherwise you are all set. yes give them a second chance though i would say stick to the cold press for that. now i feel like i should give the holbein and turners a second looksee! thank you so much for another great video.

Speaking of forks in soup, a few years ago, I got hip to using chopsticks instead of a fork to eat ramen. Yesterday, I made some but I was out of the chopsticks I typically collect from take-out. I had to go back to using a fork and it was really difficult!! You'd think it would be easy since that's what I grew up with but I guess I've become a complete convert. They really are the best tool for the job. Actually, I've seen Asians use chopsticks with spaghetti too but I haven't tried it.
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 4 жыл бұрын
I genuinely use chopsticks and a spoon as my main utensils because chopsticks are 1-easier to clean 2-easier to use. They’re like an extension of fingers and just make so much sense to me, whereas forks, despite being stabby, usually don’t seem as effective.

I love the Holbein one - the composition, the way the colors look and the bombay ink linework are all great! I was curious about this paper and hesitant to buy it because it's a pricey brand, but I've heard many artists say they like it even more than arches. I wonder what the cold press is like. I appreciate your testing :)

I was so surprised by how much I like the Holbein one, actually. And also super surprised at how much I like this paper! I have NEVER liked hot pressed paper. Ever. It’s always too slick and seems to reject the paint, half the time. This was SO NICE to work with that I never questioned my thought that it was cold pressed for even a moment, and there were still some nice granulation texture bits and whatnot. Totally recommend it, and I’m also curious about the cold pressed!
@Kyomiibrown
@Kyomiibrown 4 жыл бұрын
Meow Meow Kapow The cold press is great. I can send you some if you want. I agree about the hot press - it’s a good paper, very similar to the OLD version of fabriano artistico hot press (I don’t like fabriano artistico cold press though.) Both SW hot press and the old fabriano hot press are also superb for gouache.

Oooooo!!!! A BOOK! Totally ordered! I can't wait! I love when you do testing and comparisons! I have noticed that when people do water color brand comparisons, I am usually drawn to M Graham. Not sure why. But for this round I think I have to hand it to Holbein. I really loved the vibrancy of it! Of all of them, that painting seemed to jump off the page the most! Rodents say Hi to Bubba and for some reason they want him to know that they have the vacuum cleaner surrounded and are going in!

I love this paper to, it's my go to, its also super affordable here. The mill where they make is actually in the next county over from me so about 1.5 hours drive! I really like how to colours look and behave on this paper, its a dream, the only other brand I find that matches the quality of this paper (so far) is the Arches papers. Your book sounds really interesting!
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 4 жыл бұрын
Woah, that’s so cool that you’re close to where they make it! Interesting that you specifically said arches is on the top of your list, since I even mentioned arches and I have had a so-so relationship. Mostly, I’ve noticed that I like the loose sheets more than blocks in their case, but I also haven’t used my arches block for a good long while. Could have totally changed my mind by now! The comments I’ve gotten back from my beta readers and ARC readers on the book have been AWESOME. Though probably one of my shining moments was when a reader said a certain scene made her cry. That’s totally a #goal right there!

Like the Holbein and Sennelier and, yes, I experiment with materials. Recently went back to my Van Gogh and Petite Aquarelle watercolors and found out I like both better than I thought I had. So far, I am not a big fan of Schmincke (I know! What an apostate!). Prefer my Da Vinci, if I'm not using my honey-based M.G. and Sennelier, which are my favorites! I vote for your trying Arches again--cold or hot or rough, whichever you prefer. Blick has their extra white, but only in sheets, not blocks. Don't know if you need that since you do ink drawings/outlines, but it is available.
@MeowMeowKapow

I didn’t like schmincke at all when I first started using it, but it’s grown on me slowly. Sennelier? My now actual favorite? HATED it to start with. My own change in preference is amusing to me! And I got a specific set of Windsor newton with an arches block and a brush during a sale like.... a year ago, but the components are still available in some form! I’ll give them a go when I get a chance to.

my fave is the m. graham one, without knowing the book i think it's an excellent cover! very mysterious but expressive and i love the decisive and dramatic black lineart. fun sidenote, the only two 100% cotton papers i've tried are this one and arches rough. out of those i like this one infinitely more!! but that's likely more to do with my texture preferences than the brands. my shaky hands just don't mesh super well with extra rough paper. plus it feels so much drier to me??? i like a juicy art experience and the rough paper felt like painting on sandpaper. (now i'm getting unsure if i've already said this in your comments. i try to comment a lot and my short term memory is crappy at best. sorry if i repeat myself!)

The good news is if you’ve said it before, I’ve already forgotten! I also have a memory that just runs away from me, so we’re a perfect pair! Don’t think I’ve ever tried any rough papers, let alone extra rough papers, so I wonder what id think of them. This is the first time I’ve EVER liked hot pressed paper, though, so it’s a super wonderful surprise!

It was funny that, from your description, the paper seemed like hot-pressed, so I thought it would be a nice cold-pressed paper to try ... but then it turned out it wasn't. haha Also, yeah, Daniel Smith paints seem to lack some kind of luminosity that other paints have.
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve had enough cold pressed papers that barely have any texture to them that I totally believed my assumption that this was CP, despite its smoothness. But every HP paper I’ve tried thus far had been too slick and usually rejected the paint a bit, and been streaky or weird. Never would have even thought that I would have bought HP paper, so it was likely a random mistake but I’m actually glad for it! And it’s so weird for me that Daniel Smith looks so dull, now, given that I initially got them because I thought they looked so bright! Sennelier has totally spoiled me with its luminosity.
@ThingOfSome
@ThingOfSome 4 жыл бұрын
@@MeowMeowKapow The points that stuck out for me were the minimal texture, and the quick drying time. There are some hot-pressed papers that have a very little bit of texture, like Hahnemühle Cezanne and Claire Fountaine satin/demi-satin.
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 4 жыл бұрын
ThingOfSome for me, the minimal drying time just seemed like a natural feature of cotton paper in general, since it always seems like cotton is thirstier than cellulose as a general rule of thumb. Especially because I tend to use super inexpensive cellulose papers, due to needing so much of it for the channel!
@ThingOfSome
@ThingOfSome 4 жыл бұрын
@@MeowMeowKapow Oh, interesting. Which cellulose papers do you use? Well-sized cellulose should dry more quickly than the same well-sized cotton paper. I have used super absorbent cotton paper, but they also stay wet longer, depending on the sizing and texture.
