Disclaimer: This video is intended only to expand your knowledge regarding cognitive health and is NOT a substitute for seeking medical advice. It’s important to first communicate with your doctor regarding any of the information you wish to put into practice, especially for serious illnesses such as Alzhiemer's disease. OK, let’s get started!
#DaleBredesen #Alzhimers #DrGundry
It’s now the sixth-leading cause of death for ALL adults in the United States, and over 90 million Americans are genetically predisposed to get it.
Yes, I’m talking about Alzheimer's Disease.
And unfortunately, most so-called experts will tell you there’s nothing you can do about it.
But I’ve got news: my guest says that line of thinking is complete BOGUS.
In fact, he believes that not only can this dreaded disease be prevented, but it can be REVERSED.
I’m joined again by Dr. Dale Bredesen, New York Times bestselling author, and professor of Molecular & Medical Pharmacology at UCLA. Dr. Bredesen has a new book out called, The First Survivors of Alzheimer's: How Patients Recovered Life and Hope in Their Own Words.
Dr. Bredesen gives an exclusive look into his book, including what most people get WRONG about the evaluation, prevention, and treatment of Alzhiemers disease. We also share how YOU can support a healthy brain and mental clarity- no matter your age.
That's right, Dr. Bredesen says there is hope for everyone out there - and your journey starts today.
On this episode you’ll learn:
The 4 stages of Alzheimer's disease - and why there’s no “one size-fits-all” when it comes to treatment (6:00)
Common indicators of early onset dementia - and how taking THIS preventative step could save your life or the life of a loved one (7:00)
The yearly routine that can give YOU better understand your brain health and help reduce your risk of cognitive decline (it CAN be prevented) (10:00)
Why having a “senior moment” is NOT a normal part of aging - and why the typical treatment surrounding cognitive decline is considered “dangerous” and “old fashioned” (14:00)
5 of the BIGGEST threats to brain health - and simple ways to avoid or counteract the damage (15:00)
The FIRST steps you (or a loved one) should take after receiving a diagnosis for Alzhiemer’s - and why Dr. Bredesen says taking this approach is the secret to ending the dementia epidemic (19:00)
2 dietary changes you can make TODAY to significantly support your cognitive health - and tips for getting started (23:00)
The cognitive test you NEED to ask your doctor about (and what to do if they don’t take your request seriously) (38:00)
Mentioned on this episode:
The End of Alzheimer's: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline (purchase here!)

I had been having GI issues for several months. I made an appointment with the Dr./Surgeon that did my last colonoscopy and surgical procedure expecting a colonoscopy and endoscopy scheduling. He introduced me to Dr. Gundry. I'm improving after only a few days. I am beyond grateful that my Dr. talked to me about nutrition and Dr. Gundry.

Thanks so much for this!!! I've advocated this school of thought for *3 decades* ! So far, in my 60s the 30somethings think I'm one of them! 🤭 Only in the 2020s have I heard actual doctors who agree with me on this! Getting older DOES NOT mean "slowing down" *unless you let it* ! We *should* and CAN be "sharp as a tack" until the very end! I would love to find a geriatric specialist with this attitude in the NYC area. Suggestions welcome!l

You should create a simple course of health for beginners. It is just a suggestion. Or, do you know where I can get a good course of basic human function? Thanks to your books, it created for me a natural curiosity of knowing the human system. Especially the endocrine system, is fascinating. And I am getting deeper. Hope here in Mexico we can create that culture and thirst of knowledge.

@@brucehutchinson9527 also i would NOT trust the other one he tells me to eat a plant based diet like i'm some kinda herbivore? 23:45 so he tells us that we should Not consume cholesterol... it's 25%/25 saturated animal fat / cholesterol so everyone should further reduce it sound about right i should eat less of what the brain is made from . consume MORE SUGAR which has caused the dementia or Alzheimer's(Type 3 diabetes) in the first place Type 3 diabetes most likely the person also has Type 2 diabetes Since all plant sludge is made from sugar (this is how plant store energy) i.e fruits, vegetables and grains.. ARE just another name for sugar. how is EATING even more sugar going to make this go away?? a VEGAN diet as he suggest would make things even WORSE since you can't get b12, Saturated animal fat, cholesterol and omega3's from plants or plastic bottles from walmart (these are not the bioavailable version it's just taking ur money)

Hi Dr. Gundry. When I first started your diet, I went all in. For the first few months I developed a rash of tiny red bumps on my stomach, chest and a bit on my back. I did some research online and the only thing I could come up with was that my body wasn’t used to producing ketones and such caused the rash. I continued the diet and the rash is gone now and I feel great! Could you provide any insight on what happened to me? Has something similar happened with your past patients at all? Thanks for all the tips and I can’t wait to read your next book!

Will improving Glycosylation have benefits for Alzheimer's? (E.g. ingesting specific long-chain polysaccharides - as from certain mushrooms - which the gut-microbiome can then 'unzip' into monosaccharides to make them available for forming Glycoprotein Structures on cell surfaces to optimise cell-cell communication). Some studies already showed enhanced memory, mood, cognition & motor skills. Why don't we see more research into this?

When they are dead. Then it's too late. Perhaps also when those around the person don't care and are not willing to provide support. It's not too late. This conversation gives the most important things to address. You can add some icing on the cake by providing music that the person loved as a young person, going outside in the sun, visiting natural areas to breathe in the good microbes, massage, continuing the conversation about what they can remember rather than trying to correct the memory mishaps of recent events, making the environment supportive for someone with dementia (removing trip hazards, excessive ornaments, toxic plants, gas stoves that turn off the gas if the flame is extinguished) but also keeping the environment stimulating, homely, easy to navigate... perhaps it's just having some extra seats in the garden, a bath rail in the shower, simplifying their belongings...

Real questions.. - do people with dementia get progressively more selfish and into themselves? Caring less about the life around them. - did they become like this because they chose not to look and care about others as much as themselves? - is forgetting a convenience? Or a something that never got dealt with and so the process of creation, maintenance, and destruction never came to fruition? Largely all that’s left eventually is the tendencies, compulsions and karma that never came full circle. To be relived until the process is complete? Interesting ideas: - the breath, and the mental processes are intimately connected. But the weak link goes. - the quality of an environment is proportional to the type of organism that can inhabit that environment. - what is the role of cell phone towers and electromagnetic fields on the system? Is it because of the thinner skulls that the birds are dying fastest and is most evident?

Interesting thought processes you have... one thing I know though: My uncle died of Alheimers. My mother took care of Alzheimer patients... Definitely NOT a choice they would make in any way. Early stages in particular, they are terrified by what is happening to them. It's horrible. Put yourself there. How would you feel, knowing that everything and everyone you care about will eventually not exist for you...? Worrying about what they'll become. Knowing you'll never get to know what great things they will do, not to be able to share in the special moments that punctuate life...to die in bits and pieces, and not know it in the end. Sad. Can't imagine anyone wanting to die that way. They forget how to breathe in the end...

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 🧠 *Understanding Alzheimer's Disease* - Alzheimer's disease is a significant health issue, currently the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, with over 90 million Americans genetically predisposed. - Conventional thinking often suggests there's no effective treatment for Alzheimer's. 02:23 🧪 *What Causes Alzheimer's?* - Alzheimer's is primarily characterized by a global reduction in cognition, including memory loss and impaired cognitive functions. - Various theories about the causes of Alzheimer's, including amyloid plaques, tau proteins, inflammation, and pathogens, have not led to successful treatments. 07:08 🚨 *Early Indicators of Cognitive Decline* - Early indicators of cognitive decline include subtle memory problems, difficulty with navigation, recognizing faces, calculating, or remembering numbers. - It's crucial to identify these signs during the subjective cognitive impairment (SCI) stage for early intervention. 11:14 💡 *Importance of a "Cognoscopy"* - A "cognoscopy" is a set of blood tests and cognitive assessments recommended for individuals aged 45 and older. - It helps evaluate cognitive health risk factors, including insulin resistance, inflammation, and toxins exposure. 19:47 🏥 *Standard of Care for Alzheimer's* - The standard of care for Alzheimer's often falls short, with limited effective treatments. - A personalized approach, addressing specific contributors to cognitive decline, offers better results. 23:02 🔄 *The ReCODE Protocol* - ReCODE stands for Reversal of Cognitive Decline and involves a comprehensive, personalized approach. - It includes dietary changes, such as adopting a ketogenic diet, addressing oxygen saturation during sleep, optimizing oral microbiome, and detoxification when necessary. 23:43 🥗 *Overview of the Recode Protocol* - The Recode Protocol focuses on optimizing neurochemistry through various lifestyle factors, diet, exercise, sleep, and stress reduction. - It includes elements like a mildly ketogenic plant-rich diet, fasting (keto flex 12/3), exercise, and stress reduction. - Brain training, detoxification, and targeted supplements are also part of the protocol. 25:32 💡 *Timed Eating and Fasting* - The protocol recommends a minimum fasting period of 12 hours, extending to 14-16 hours for some individuals. - Time-restricted eating helps promote autophagy and supports overall health, including cognitive function. - Avoiding late-night eating is crucial for better outcomes. 28:12 🌿 *Supplements and Immune System* - The immune system's role in neurodegenerative diseases is highlighted, and strategies to support it are crucial. - Supplements like zinc, vitamin D, and acetylcysteine can help modulate the immune response. - Addressing inflammation and resolving it is a key focus for immune system health. 34:08 🧪 *Individual Variability in Protocol Effectiveness* - The effectiveness of the Recode Protocol can vary from person to person. - Factors like the timing of starting the protocol, compliance, and the presence of severe toxic exposure play a role. - Patients with severe toxic exposure may require longer adherence to the protocol for noticeable improvements. 38:12 📊 *Essential Tests and Doctor-Patient Communication* - Requesting tests like fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, fasting glucose, hemoglobin A1c, and inflammatory markers is essential. - Many doctors may not be familiar with these tests, so patient education and advocacy are crucial. - The gap between 20th-century medicine and 21st-century medicine needs to be bridged for more comprehensive care. 42:45 📖 *Stories of Patients on the Recode Protocol* - The book "The First Survivors of Alzheimer's" features the inspiring stories of seven patients who followed the Recode Protocol. - These stories provide hope, insight into personal journeys, and offer protocols and strategies that readers can apply. - Highlighting the impact on families and the potential to reduce the global burden of dementia is a central theme. 46:11 ⏳ *Reversing Alzheimer's: Timeframe for Improvement* - Reversing Alzheimer's is a gradual process and doesn't happen in a few months. - Key factors include entering ketosis, improving sleep, optimizing oxygenation, healing the gut, and maintaining healthy lipids and insulin sensitivity. - Improvement typically takes three to six months, but individual results may vary. 47:08 🔄 *Continuous Optimization for Cognitive Health* - Reversing cognitive decline isn't a one-time effort; it requires continuous optimization. - Some individuals may cycle in and out of ketosis occasionally, but long-term commitment is essential. - The goal is to maintain cognitive abilities and memory for many years. 49:08 🧠 *Maintaining Cognitive Health into Old Age* - The new era of medicine, including functional medicine, allows people to stay mentally sharp into their late 90s and beyond. - A 97-year-old patient exemplifies the potential for maintaining cognitive function with proper care. - Early intervention and lifestyle changes can significantly impact cognitive health. 50:17 📈 *Future Directions for the ReCODE Protocol* - Ongoing research includes a larger randomized controlled trial to validate the ReCODE Protocol. - Adapting the protocol for other neurodegenerative diseases like macular degeneration and Lewy body. - Planning a severe Alzheimer's reversal attempt (SARAH) trial for late-stage Alzheimer's patients, exploring potential treatments and interventions. 53:05 🍞 *Lectin-Free Bread and Pancake Alternatives* - Alternative options to wheat flour for lectin-free bread and pancakes include psyllium fiber, tapioca fiber, and cassava. - Dr. Gundry's Gundry MD bread and pancake mixes provide delicious alternatives. - Various recipes are available online for creating lectin-free baked goods with the desired consistency. It is my experience and my opinion that arguing with doctors about technical medical details is not very fruitful. There are very few doctors in my experience who are smart enough to know that they don’t know everything and who are willing to look out side of the box. With the doctors that are most recalcitrant, I replace them. With the doctors that are flexible and intelligent enough to recognize the truth of the old saying that: It ain’t what we don’t know that hurts us so much is what we know that just ain’t so, I work with them. I bring them the information and spoon feed it to them request the test that I want run and try to help them learn to help me. There is a line, from I believe was the movie cancan, where they were discussing the old adage that a man who has himself for an attorney has a fool for a client to which Frank Sinatra replies, it’s better to have a fool for a client than to have a fool for a lawyer. Life is too short for me to train the doctors who don’t want to learn. If I can find a Doctor Who is interested in learning and moving forward I consider myself blessed. I have wound up replacing a few doctors. And, I have been extremely fortunate to find several curious, Bright, able, interested, and Extremely Helpful doctors. I do not plan to get out of this life alive.

When Im in ketosis its kinjd of like a high of course I know its a shift of hormones adrenaline testosterone and others and my minf is sharper I wish Id known this in school but so be it I figured it out before any of this was written!Through fasting and prayer alone there weas nothing writtenj about the physiology of fasting and what you could expect nwouldehappen or how to try or expeiment with it its been a sdtrange journey I benefited in two othere becaiuse U recieved the Joly Spiorit about every three days the fasted spirit will come again like your initial baptism as well as a dream or vision but what that really is is a sirt of telepathioc type training! As you know there are good and evil beings in this world call them aliens or what you will this is how they speak normally and share information Jesus did twp forty day fASTS ONE YOU cab see the other is invisible! only to those who follow in the foot steps of fastinmg and prayer tyhis is why he promised us a lonmjg life not by reading and studying a book or sppiritual book like the bible1 And if you think about it your actually cheating because the true gospel was meant for those who were uneducated or illioterate its called Gods Grace and there are many other benefits and revelations along the way things you never expected were possible! I am living proof but Im,m not the only one.
