Is this southern red oak log too much for the Gransfors Bruk Scandinavian forest axe to handle? I put it to the test, check for edge damage, and test the famous Swedish axe against several other axes of the same size.

My opinion and experience with edges is yes hidden debris can be found in the bark and if you use it, it will get dull just like a knife. I wouldn’t sweat the little things.

Interesting vid. I wonder if a bit of research would reveal the different treatments the steel has had for each axe. In my experience no cutting tool comes sharp out the box: chisels, planes, etc. They're just ground to a bevel and always need sharpened. In an ideal world you'd have a steeper bevel for hard woods, shallower bevel for soft woods. Will also make a difference how green that oak log was. (Pop a wedge-shaped split log under each side to stop it rolling.) In the end I think it comes down to personal preference and the job you're doing. For instance, I love my carbon steel kitchen knife but I wouldn't take it out into the woods. Either you have a harder steel that's harder to sharpen but maintains its edge longer, or you have a softer steel that's easier to get razor sharp but will dull more quickly. Would be good if Gransfors let their customers know they're buying the latter. Or maybe it's just from a bad batch? Sorry, you probably know all that already. 😁

Bark can hold a LOT of dirt/tiny rocks which will wreck your edge (learned this the hard way lol) Especially if it was close to the stump or even touched the ground at all. I keep a wire brush on hand to scrub the bark where my axe is going to touch to try to clean as much off as I can before I chop. It’s possible you hit some debris that was trapped in it. That being said, I believe GBs to be overrated. Lol

Haha there it is. I was pretty surprised about the edge. I do think it’s a soft batch of axes. This is the second one from sake store sake smith. I’m not happy with it but it was a gift from my father and will treasure it for that reason. Plus I don’t want to put out the store by returning another one… but wow if this is the way GBA edges hold I am absolutely floored they built up the rep they have.

I watched another KZfaq channel recently and he did a comparison of three premium brand axes of similar size and weight. One was a Granfors Bruk, 2nd was Hardcore Hammers and the third was a Council Tool velvicut. He looked at things like the quality of steel used, the fit & and finish, and the performance. The Council tool axe came out on top. During his comparison he noted that Granfors Bruk uses recycled high carbon steel in forging the heads. Which is a nice way of saying that it's a mystery steel. If the blacksmith doesn't know exactly what steel they are working with, then it's impossible to get a consistent heat treatment everytime. Council tool and Hardcore Hammers both use known steels. Hardcore Hammers only failed in the fit and finish, because the grain orientation was way off and the wedges in the eye were sloppy. I think the problem with yours is the mystery steel. It remains too soft to hold an edge for long, because they dont know the optimal temperature to heat treat it at.

@Urban Lumberjack the factory edge on the SFAs is too thick. People get confused about the difference between the bevel and the final edge itself. I brought the bevel on my small forest axe back a good 1/2" and made it convex. The factory bevel isn't all that good but I'd suspect that you've got some issues with the steel at the heal and toe where there is less material to distribute the heat during grinding. They grind a quick crappy bevel on from the factory. For comparison a file won't touch mine without a whole lot of force and short life for the file. I assume that the file wasn't really removing material in the video. If it was you might have a bigger issue. If it wasn't then you might try knocking the edge off and reprofiling a bit to see if the issue goes away. I put my SFA through seasoned hardwood with zero hesitation or issues. You convinced me to knock the rust off of my old long handle Flying Fox. It's been sitting around for years now. I never liked it as much as I thought I would.

@urbanlumberjack
@urbanlumberjack Жыл бұрын
If you have a picture you can send it to me at urbanlumberjackga@gmail.com. That sounds though like it’s not a crack bit park of the forging process where the drift is reversed and driven in from bottom. This is actually one of the biggest benefits of having a GB axe. Drifting from top and bottom gives the eye a kind of “hourglass” shape, and it will provide a really tight friction fit on the handle instead of risking being on a “shelf,” so to speak. If it’s a crack that’s a problem but my guess is it’s not a crack but part of the metal spreading during the drifting. Perfectly fine.

yes, also when done at higher temperatures a carbide buildup on the edge happens, and causes a very hard but very brittle edge. I have Japanese cutlery and many people have commented on Takeda knives chipping. That is rectified after a few good sharpenings, at which point the carbide is gone and the beauty of the hard sharp Japanese steel starts to shine (characteristic, not chrome-like).

Not true at all. This line needs to die. The first time I heard this line was an old "NutNFancy" video from YEARS ago and even back then I rolled my eyes when he said that (about knives). Ever since then I always seem to still run into this comment. There are plenty of species of wood with various properties that can eat steel all day long for breakfast. It's weird, but it's true! Horace Kephart makes mention of this in his book. Even the best tempered steels and American made axes of his day could chip out on certain species of pines where the resin formed into balls as hard as glass. Extreme cold temperatures can make the steel even more brittle and cause chipping to the point of failure. This is why it's always advised to warm your axe head under your armpit for awhile before use in freezing and below temperatures. The number one wood you never mess with is Hemlock. Hemlock will absolutely destroy even the best tempered axe edges. Beater axes only for that type of wood (preferably just chainsaws). I have a GB Scandinavian of my own for years now, marked "HD"....I've chopped and split tons of hardwoods with it and never experienced any major edge issues. GB QC can be touch and go over the years from what I have seen and heard. But there are woods that not even steel can fully conquer.

I own 7 Gransfors axes. My experience is that taking them below 20° bevel without a mini bevel of 25° would leed to damage. Even the carving axe and broadaxe dont like a thin bevel. Their axes is ok hobby axes. For real workaxes use older American axes, Australian and New Zealand axes.

My older axes are all 59-60 HRC. Even the paper labels that I’m sure weren’t top of the line when sold. Very interesting. I want to make some videos looking at Hults bruk, oxe head, council tool, etc. thanks for watching!

Ocshenkopf have also steel problems. Matt that does timbersport training broke if remember right two Ocshenkopf axes. Mine was just bump of my chopping block, which is knee height and chipped the toe. Their axes seem to be brittle. I have 12 Hults Bruk/ Hultafors axes and their steel is good steel. I am in South Africa and we have the same hard wood that Australia have.

For sure, I’ve seen three or four channels with same issue, same smith. Could be a bad batch of steel and that guy just happens to make most of the SFA, but really frustrating on a $260 axe.

Probably just a bad batch. In any case, it sharpens nice enough to have around if you lose your straight razor!

Why don’t you put a steeper bevel on the heel and toe? Just use the puck and grind it and get back to chopping man - it’s an axe, at the end of the day, I should worry too much about little nicks and rolls just adapt. Otherwise what are you going to buy another one every time it chips or rolls? You may well have hit stone or grit - but oak it is a nightmare to work that is a given. Also forget the strop you do not want a thin razor edge, use a ceramic dc4 they are extremely effective on gab axes. Razor sharp will last about 5 minutes, what you need is a considered working edge then you get chopping. Also don’t twist the axe on the toe or heel, that’s asking for trouble if you’re already aware of the issues,,

The axe steel they use is very soft and this axe is mainly for larping, not actual use.

I was very surprised find that GB has softer steel than Hults Bruk. Despite that, I do believe they have a few axes that are worth the purchase even though expensive. Their carving axe and hewing axes are excellent.

Perhaps unwanted foreign bodies embedded in the bark? More likely, that specific red oak log took exception to being 'axed' .. probably without due notice 😏.

I found the issue! The steel was ground too thin and too hot at the factory. It ruined the temper. I filed it back probably 1/8 inch and got to the good stuff. Really nice steel now

I’ve heard from many people with this issue, I’ve filed probably a 1/4 inch back and widened the bevel quite a bit. It is holding its edge much better but alot of work required to get there for such an expensive axe!

They come scary sharp to make the bushcrafters feel like they got their money's worth. They all need to be reprofiled into a usable edge. I went though this with every Swedish axe I've bought (except for Hults Bruks). Also, they aren't for felling. They're cruiser axes, for delimbing, taking out saplings, blazing trees to be cut down by loggers, etc...

Pondering this for a while, I think a knife edge on an axe is too thin even for a forest made out of stacks of paper lol. I’ve got a 20 degree on it now and it doesn’t take the damage it used to. I also believe grinding that much steel off the bit softened it considerably

I think you flattened the edge to much. There is not really a convex anymore. Also you sharpened the corners extreme, and the 'damage' was only a bend one. This isn't damage.. It looks great, but maybe you have done with that tool something it wasn't designed for. Look at a Ochsenkoof Kanada Iltis, she handn't even corners!

Don’t worry, this tree did not go to waste! In fact before I got it it was headed to be sent to the landfill. I already milled a bunch of ten foot slabs from it! The pieces I chopped were too knotty to be of good use milled. And they will not go to waste either as the wood is currently drying and will heat homes and families sitting around campfires.
