My answer to people who ask if they are too old is this. Whatever your age now, if you go to school you will be 2-4 years older when finished and have a degree. If you don't go to school, 2-4 years from now you will still be older but with no degree.

I AM a career changer. I AM the oldest student in my classes. I AM looked at and upon by others as the oddity (and some aren't all that nice about it!). BUT.... I AM more motivated than them (I made this decision, I WILL not only pass - but ACE these classes..because I HAVE to and I realize that others might see my age as something I have to prove myself beyond.)! I KNOW MYSELF better now (I KNOW what it takes to get that information to get in and STAY in my brain)! And I KNOW how to handle situations MUCH better (I've been out there and dealt with MANY different sorts. I know HOW to talk to professors and bosses, other students and colleagues, patients customers and those working under me. I won't MAKE the mistakes and have the terrible regrets that come with immaturity.) Am I too old? NO WAY!!!

Absolutely. I’ve just made the decision to go into nursing and for what it is I am older, I’m 42. It’s been 24 years since I been in a classroom. I passed the Teas Exam a week ago and just received notice of acceptance into nursing school a couple of days ago. As an older individual I believe it gives us an edge as we have more maturity, we are able to handle situations as they arise and we are focused more at limiting distractions. Good for you! 😊

I'm glad to see someone addressing this topic. It's so difficult to go back to school after being gone for many years! I'm a junior in a BSN program and the oldest student in my class (even though I'm only 33). When I did my pre-reqs at the local community college, that wasn't the case. There were 40- and 50-somethings in there getting their ADN. It's different at university though. I'm surrounded by pretty little sorority girls and kids who aren't even old enough to legally drink yet, and I'm a married woman with two kids and the stretch marks to prove it! I won't lie-it's been hard on my self-esteem. Also makes it difficult to study in groups with them because the mind set is so different, but I'm doing my best. I've done pretty well in the program so far and that's all that matters. I will be the first person in my family to earn a bachelor's degree :)
@NurseBass
@NurseBass 8 жыл бұрын
+JT Squared Well I think that's absolutely wonderful and a big congratulations to you! I will be the first person in my family to earn a degree of any kind haha, so we're in the same boat! I probably should have mentioned in the video also how age actually is a beneficial factor. The maturity that comes with age is so incredibly valuable. It's that maturity that makes the transition into professionalism so much easier. A lot of really young kids are more concerned with partying and enjoying that time in their life and consequently, they struggle. So congratulations for getting in there and getting it done, being the first one to earn a Bachelor's, and pursuing a rewarding career for your family and kids. :D
@mckenna8663
@mckenna8663 8 жыл бұрын
+JT Squared - - I find that the younger folks are pretty wary about being in a study group with me or work on projects together. I KNOW that they think that they will have to pull the "old lady" along (and in my case - you could be my daughter - so I AM the old lady by some standards) . But I find a SMALL group that **I** have scoped out to be decent students AND pleasant - then I usually have to sell myself. I'm a former teacher with years of experience which translates to a LOT of study/group study tips and ideas (AND I have written tons of tests - so I have insight as to what others will test US on) ... PLUS, I'm a 4.0 student who WILL ace this class (It's a requirement I set for MYSELF). Now... can I study with YOU? - - If they aren't uppity, they say yes immediately!

Brad I really appreciate this video. I am an older nursing student, the oldest in my class. I've been an LVN for 6 years and am now transitioning to ADN. I'll graduate in May right after I turn 50. The pressure is already being put on us to continue to BSN. It's a real struggle deciding how much further to go with my education based on my age.
@NurseBass
@NurseBass 8 жыл бұрын
+Kim Sage I'm really glad that you enjoyed the video. And congratulations for going back and pursuing a great career. That's really admirable. Yea, it seems that healthcare is shifting toward having all Nurses obtain their BSN. I would definitely recommend to at least continue and finish your BSN. You can graduate from your ADN program and find a job and then from there, work while taking an accelerated RN-BSN program. And as I'm sure you know, depending on your employer, they will pay for you to go back. And it is also a good selling point for ADN Nurses to tell potential employers that they already have a plan to continue on and get their BSN. A lot of people with ADN's worry that they will have difficulty finding employment, but to tell them that you already are going to continue on and get that BSN turns out to be a good selling point for employers. Good luck and congratulations! May is right around the corner!

I have been wanting to enter nursing school for 1 1/2 yrs and finally got accepted and have wondered about my age entering nursing school at this time, but I am determined and want it so bad and it actuality, I really enjoy going to school with younger students. Like always given great advice from the heart. Age is just a number, is how you feel internally. Is never too late to go back to school to pursue the career one always want or to pursue any goal. I've known nurses that became a nurse after their 50's and also became ARNP after. Is all about how you feel and how much you love what you want. Circumstances in life may have have put a break in our life, that doesn't mean we have to stop. We need to follow our dreams and make them a reality. Personally, I'm in my mid 40's and is now that I can pursue my career and make it a reality. Probably will not stop there, I encourage anyone who reads this to go for it and make it a reality. Good luck to all! xoxo

As the saying goes " when the student is ready , the teacher shall appear" I just recently realized I'm ready for the challenge . I look at it this way , since we as CNAs are asked by RNs to do things out of our job description anyways , we may as well go back to school and get the degree and get the pay for it.

I have been a CNA on and off from 25 to now 35. Currently, I am in LPN school and will be done before I turn 36. The way I see it, I've been doing tons of other cool things along the way. These last 10, 15 years, years have Not been a waste ... I served in the military, I earned my Associate degree, I studied Health Coaching and got certified because it was something I just found to be interesting, I've had experiences in All sorts of healthcare settings, heck, I've been a cake decorator too for years exploring my creative side, I've had 3 kids along the way, been with my husband for several years, bought a home, got financially stable for the first time in my life - I've simply been living. There is no rule saying if you didn't start as a nurse at 20 that it's no use. Doing awesome cool things, being stuck in a rut, experiencing life ..that's never a waste. And now with my improved maturity levels and life experiences I personally find nursing school is not That hard compared to some of my younger peers. It's all about when the timing is right for You. Why cant you say you had a FEW awesome careers over a lifetime and done a few things you've always wanted to try. Maybe I'll be a nurse for 15 years and decide to go another route at 50. Why not!

Love this video and all these comments and testimonies! I am 30 myself and got my bachelor degree in business because I thought that would land me the most jobs. But what I just realized (now that I am 30) is that I can't stand a routine corporate environment and that helping others heal is where my passion really is - what I feel like I was created to do. So I have been looking into nursing programs and will hopefully, and Lord willing, be an RN in a couple/few years!

I hope you went for it. I am. I’m almost 27. One advantage (if you look at it my way) that you have is that you already got a bunch of big life steps out of the way.....marriage kids homeownership etc. In my case, I pissed away the last seven and a half years because of crippling depression, social anxiety, and morbid obesity.....in other words....did nothing but wallow in self pity for the last nearly decade......just now losing a lot of weight and getting back in control of my mental state and my life. Starting prerequisites in the fall hopefully. I’m hoping I can be done with nursing school by 30....but THEN I’ll have to be accomplishing all the things you did....while likely paying off student loan debt too....in my 30s..... that scares me a bit, but there are a few advantages I guess.....and it’s better than working minimum wage for the rest of my life and continuing to let my irrational fears conquer my life...so here I go....

I find that I sort of envy the younger students not because they are quicker or smarter (honey, many are not)... but what they DO have is less responsibility and life's distractions. THEN AGAIN.....like I at that age... most of them are wasting that advantage because they don't know any differently. they don't KNOW how good they have it to be in school WITHOUT the distractions and responsibilities of "adult life". ON THE OTHER HAND.... YOU are now learning more about organization, how to problem solve BEYOND the test questions to GET IT DONE!! Do they have the advantage...in some ways, yes. But MY (and your) advantages....make me the BETTER student, more MOTIVATED student, and thus...the more successful student than I ever WOULD have been. BEST WISHES!! YOU CAN DO IT!!!
