This video must have taken you weeks to put together and it shows! A couple months ago, you blew me away with the deepest dive I've ever come across for the Went Gin and now you've matched, if not eclipsed, that exegesis while celebrating the 15th anniversary of the canonical Nassau Tweezer. I'm just floored that this was published over two weeks ago yet it hasn't even garnered 10k views. Where the fuck are all the Phish fans? Or is the KZfaq algorithm screwing you over? I'm guessing it's the latter because I can't think of a single Phish fan with whom I'm friends, know fairly well, or just "show" acquaintances who wouldn't relish the opportunity to learn about, or just relive from a new perspective, this beloved rendition of Tweezer. I hope this doesn't discourage you from investing in future video histories. You are entertaining and enlightening a community that prides itself on the breadth and depth of its knowledge. If I had to guess, I would say that I've listened to the Went Gin at least a couple hundred times over the past 20 years and the Nassau Tweezer in the ballpark of 50-75 times since '03. Since I don't play an instrument, I don't understand (or even think about) musical composition or theory when I listen to Phish or other bands. And yet you made the nomenclature easily accessible to someone who has no history with it. I appreciate the way you articulated why the band members seemed to make certain choices as they listened to each other on stage and how, with just the slightest physical motion or sonic cue, they signal to each other their ideas and even their disapproval if they don't like what's unfolding. Most of all, I dug the manner in which you connected the history of music in both the main points and minutiae of the Nassau Tweezer. I had no idea the pentatonic scale held an aurally and instinctually universal appeal. I also never gave a great deal of thought to the the musical styles that directly influenced the compositional, as opposed to the improvisational, part of Tweezer. I dug the manner in which you introduced how the music of their salad days directly informed the style in which Trey and Mike developed their scored parts, from the Tweezer Tap (born from Eddie Van Halen and guitarists even before him) to the slap bass line ('70s funk/Larry Graham) that makes the intro and verses so compelling. Even the conceptual examples with which most Phish fans are intimately familiar, like Carlos Santana and The HOSE, are instantiated in a way that both entertains as well as augments our historical knowledge of Phish. Please keep up the great work! What you're doing is unique and we need more of it. This fucking behemoth of a website is suffocating under the weight of crackpot conspiracy theorists, humans too narcissistic or lonely to understand that their cats aren't the center of the goddamn universe, and talking heads who make a living demeaning others and shouting down anyone who dares to highlight an alternative to their intractable system of beliefs. Apart from the drivel that dominates KZfaq's algorithmic triggers, and slowly lobotomizes its audience, those who love music can find hundreds (or in the case of GD, Phish, Cheese: thousands) of hours of concert footage, a plethora of music teachers imparting them with detailed strategies and techniques to improve on pretty much any instrument, and interviews of musicians ranging from The Beatles to The Decemberists, Sam Bush to Kate Bush. But what you've produced here is entirely unique and stands apart from anything I've ever had KZfaq's algorithm suggests as a product of my search history. You have no control over the KZfaq algorithm, but just know that there's at least one person out there who's going to link this video to over 100 other Phish fans who will, in turn, let their friends know about it. Thank you for investing so much time into these videos. They are phenomenal.

The "Hadron Collider" is the Ibanez DM-2000. Trey once said in an interview... "I also have an Ibanez DM-2000, one of the first digital delays they ever made. It's got this bug in it. If you have the flange going and you hit the infinite hold button, it totally freaks out. It makes all these awful sounds. That's all I use it for."

Man, you are fucking awesome! I was at this show with my best friends and yes, without a doubt, it was one of the most spiritual moments of my life. I cannot agree with you more than that feeling having left the concert. I remember before the show in the lot, there was something in the air... there was this patient calmness, this energy emanating from the Coliseum that created this mood, this mood for things to come. 15 years later, I still get chills listening to this Tweezer. I have never, never in my life seen or heard such joy after that performance when they peaked together with Trey's chainsaw chord progression that turned into bright sparks exploding in the sky with Page. I will always regard this concert as one of the best experiences of my life. Love, from Spain...

I must be deranged because I absolutely love that feedback from 3:55-4:10 on the Nassau Tweezer. Granted I wasn't there, but it's just SO primal and pretty much sets the stage for the shred-fest to come.

Me and my Phiends do a Phish Tribute. The Squirming Coils. Great thing you did here with the analyzing what they are doing. We have been playing Phish for years and still remain in San Diego. But your right in everything you say in the video. I notice that when we have a good crowd of people and we catch that groove in the jams the audience goes nuts. We somehow naturally developed this because we have been playing music all our lives. The most important thing is what you say in a great jam. It's the communicating between the members. Without that the ship sinks. I really enjoy this video. It hits home with me. Thank you

Whoa! This video is as monstrous as Tweezer itself! You are without doubt the master of teaching this stuff. I love how you said that a Phish jam is like a hike in the woods. I've made the exact analogy with a lot of improvised music. Relating it to an adventure. A lot of 2.0 and early 3.0 is off my radar as I stopped listening to them around 99 - only to return again a few years ago. So, I'm always open for more recommendations from this era. And good on you for including "Effortless Mastery" - a book everyone should read. Gonna go listen to this Tweezer in full now.

My first Phish show was 1989 in Somerville, MA. My 2 best friends were at UVM at the time and saw them several times in that period as well. Recently saw them last year at Mohegan Sun. I taped a whole tour back in 1993 also... Fun band...

33:10 ‘Do You Feel Like I Do’ the first note to start the lead guitar part of the song Trey is riffing on for a great bit. This is inspired by a fan up close center with a huge sign for that song, requested. I seen it all front row on the rail left side. I’m the tallest person over there. It was my birthday and this was the greatest thing I ever experienced on any birthday ever. Best song I’ve witnessed by PHiSH. Great segue into the first Soul Shakedown Party On American soil. At the end of the set they waved and were grinning and ready to go back for a few minutes and return to get at it again while the crowd was in a frenzy. They played a long encore and the Mexican Cousin was surprisingly great for a warmup for the inevitable Tweeprise! What a treat to reprise the mind blowing Tweezer and Kuroda had dialed in a very choice effect for this special night and a beautiful and amazing display of lighting drove this Tweeprise to the limits of aural and visual stimulation and the band especially Trey truly did not want to leave the stage after a rare band member bow center stage. Trey was the last to leave and thanked the crowd repeatedly. There was no set list for this set. There was a piece of paper on an amplifier that he would look at from time to time that whole year but it was abandoned for this second set. Great video and info. BTW Phish got their name from all the ‘60’s and ‘70’s bands that would misspell an animal’s name like the Beatles, the Byrds, The Monkees, etc. Fishman’s name is a ‘red herring’ lol. Trey tells this on an Easter egg on one of their DVD’s. Now for a breakdown of that Camden Sand...

A college bud and I saw Phish this past week in Huntsville. I live in Nashville, he lives in KY. On our trip home, he was asking me how music works, how chords are constructed, what are scales, etc. I *think* I did an OK job of it for the amount of time that he could take it in, but this vid is that much better since it takes an actual song, discusses what a form is, how the chords are constructed, etc. and takes the flow and organization from there.
