BLUE JET FACTS & INFORMATION:
The first blue jets caught on video were during a NASA aircraft mission in 1994. Rarely documented, Most blue jets are accidentally caught on camera by nature lovers photographing the parent lightning storms.
Blue jets can initiate as a leader exits the upper extent of the thunderstorm and propagates toward the upper atmosphere. The rarified air and low pressure of the upper atmosphere leads to a visible transformation in the leader as the ionization travels upward. It’s the excitation of molecular nitrogen that delivers their spectacular sapphire glow.
The top of the thunderstorm sparking this blue jet was estimated to be roughly 10 miles high and the visible portion of this blue jet was calculated by Paul Smith to be roughly 13 miles tall from storm top to upper visible extent of the jet. The low noise you hear is ear candy adding for your entertainment.
Thank you for your continuing consultation and guidance

Meteors arent that rare. Ever seen a meteor shower? You will see dozens, maybe even hundreds, of meteors in a single night. Also, I hate to tell you this, but you only see meteors when they hit the atmosphere and burn up, so to call a blue jet "the meteor of the atmosphere" seems a little strange.

Wow, you've captured some amazing stuff before, including some of the biggest "forests" of red sprites I've ever seen, along with a couple of faint green ghosts. But such an isolated and large blue jet...simply amazing. And yet, if anyone was to capture it, who better than Mr. Pecos Hank Schyma? Thanks for continuing to amaze and inspire!

Oh wow!! I have never ever seen this happen!! Tonight we had a wicked snow storm here near Toronto and all of a sudden... thunder and lightning. In March, during a winter storm! Wise, as I am (of course) I mansplained to my wife that this was because of the warm air coming up through the Ohio valley that clashed with the intense cold jetstream. She asked how I knew... Because Hank taught me.

Texas weather has been crazy recently And while many of the storms we’ve received recently have been so destructive, many of them are still beautiful And these blue jets you’ve captured are absolutely stunning. Awesome work Mr.Hank! Oh also, in an unrelated note, I’ve been playing some of your music on the acoustic! You are an amazing song writer, and your songs really fit the atmosphere (pun intended) of your channel!

I heard the storm y'all got the other day was terrible. My friend got a trampoline thrown at his roof and he seen a tornado right next to him and even got a picture of it while it was forming. I pray for y'all but I'm glad us in Louisiana have gotten a break from all the hurricanes and hope this hurricane season isn't as bad as it was 2021

@@headshotfaze9371 yeah we got 0.75 inch hail or maybe even bigger! Yeah let’s hope hurricane season isn’t as bad. Tornado season may be worse this year though. We’ll have to wait n’ see!

@@ullrich damn Our property’s trees and flora were practically destroyed during the ice storm, and then this recent storm mangled them up more. We only got roof damage from the hail. That really sucks! Hope everyone is okay!!

Great illustration that there are storm phenomena beyond tornadoes that are worth studying and capturing on film. Sprites/Jets ave a side of thunderstorms very few know about, and not only are they beautiful they tell us something about how the upper atmosphere and storms interact.

Hoooly moly what a stunningly bright capture! I'd be interested to know what you looked for in a storm with jet potential (besides a lot of lightning), though by the sounds of it even a perfect storm gives basically no chance. At this point you've perfectly captured so many lightning-related phenomena few others get to see!
@dinguslopper
@dinguslopper Жыл бұрын
I believe the idea is to target storms where the following conditions are met: 1) potential for vigorous lightning 2) there’s a good vantage point where you’ll have an unobstructed view of the storm from very far away (>dozens of miles), and 3) conditions are such that a continuous stretch of clear sky is likely to exist between your vantage point and the storm, giving you a view of clear sky “above” the cloud tops. I don’t believe there’s a way to forecast “likely jet-producing” storms, though I may be wrong. But it’s true that if those 3 conditions aren’t met, you won’t see any jets!

AWESOME CATCH!🎉 That’s so amazing! I’ve always been fascinated by thunderstorms & learned a lot from my Papa Gene as a kid. He was a geologist. Any time we were together & one would start forming we’d head outside to observe it. He lived in Amarillo & I grew up in southern NM, so there was that huge expanse to watch them form & move. Thanks for sharing this with us! It’s truly an incredible find & capture!
