Hi Glenda, I've had my Stanwood winder for a couple years now and thought I'd pass a couple user tips on to you. First, if you keep your source yarn on the left side of the winder, you won't get the pull that Cody seemed to be getting. It will flow much smoother. Second, feed the source yarn through your left hand while you wind with your right hand. This helps provide tension so the cake is wound more evenly. I love my Stanwood and wouldn't use anything else now. Another fantastic tool is the Wool Genie. It holds your cake and you never, ever have to pull out yarn while you're working. It releases yarn at your pace. Thanks so much for all your wonderful videos. They're so helpful and inspirational.. Right now I'm working on the French Country Afghan and it's working up beautifully!!

I second both of those tips for winding. I have a large stanwood and it is a great winder. It's not my go-to anymore (my mega wool winders from knitters pride took its place), but I still have it because it is a good winder.

I bought mine 44 years ago in college, as I had a weaving class. Mine looks the same as yours. I have used mine multiple times over the years. It is an old tool that is very useful. I have used mine to wind balls of yarn and crochet thread. I have wound multiple threads together to create new colors you cannot buy. This is a wonderful tool. I don't remember it being called a LARGE ball winder though.

I have this winder and love it. One thing I learned is to wind the cake twice so that your yarn isn't too tight which could disrupt the fibers. Try it and watch how much bigger your cake gets!

Explain please. Do you wind it, unwind and wind again? All of it or a section at a time? If all of it how do you keep it from tangling?

Take the center pull thread from the center of the cake, thread it on the winder and go. It's exactly the same as though you're using a swif but without the swif. I drop the cake into a plastic ice cream container set on the floor to hold it as I wind.

Thanks for this video, Glenda. I have the little one you showed, the yellow and pink. Can't get my box right now for name. I do not like mine, it jumps the gears, does not wind very well, and when I am using the cake it sometimes comes out "messed up" inside.

Glenda I think if you mount the winder to the opposite end of the table from your swift, so there is not an angle to the yarn but it comes straight, it should wind even smoother.

I have a Stanwood winder, Amish swift & umbrella swift....love them all!! They all have a different purpose. I prefer the umbrella swift for making a cake, it holds the hank better....but I prefer the Amish swift if I need to "rehank" the yarn or make a hank. I do that if I happen to 'cake dye' something & it needs to be unwound to dry.... (I don't have a nitty noddy) If the yarn cake is too tight, it does stretch it out, rewind it...BUT turn the crank in the opposite direction so the yarn isn't twisted. It feels weird at first, but trust me!!! There's nothing more annoying than yarn that's all twisted up on itself.

I have a Stanwood large-capacity yarn ball winder (the bottom part is green); just have to install the replacement clamp they sent for it. (Note to self: Ball-winder clamps do NOT play nice with the lip on the underside of a card table!) I also have an Amish-style tabletop swift like yours -- but it's in a closet in my craft room which I don't currently have access to (because a loveseat I tested for Walmart got moved into the yarn room for storage, and is blocking the closet door).
