Seriously. Mors Principium Est /Dark Tranquility/Carcass/Allegaeon/ Insomnium et al would just absolutely blow your mind! It's taken me 30 plus years to FINALLY accept "harsh" vocals. The music is where it's at. I can't believe how long it took me to accept "death" metal particularly "melodic death metal." To my ears Carcass is absolutely spectacular . Their newest album is the perfect combo of HEAVY BLUES mixed with MDM. Check out "The Scythe's Remorseless Swing " off of Carcass's "Torn Arteries" from 2021. And I consider their seminal "Heartwork" album one the best METAL albums of all time. Absolute sonic perfection. I honestly just discovered all the artists besides Carcass only in the last year. Once I accepted the harsh vocals that was all she wrote. Check out Dark Tranquility if you haven't yet. Soilwork. Scar Symmetry. In Mourning. My ears have finally opened and my heart soon followed. I used to tell folks in the 90s to check out the band Carcass and the "Heartwork" album cause they honestly make the Metallidudes and MegaDave sound like Simon and Garfunkel. So. So SO friggin heavy but SO GOOD. Still..I didn't like Jeff Walker's growl. It honestly took me till THIS year to realize not only do I love Carcass but I NOW think Jeff is my favorite extreme metal vocalist. Lol. I'm 54 btw and I'm absolutely in love with mdm and technical death metal. I embraced metal for the first time when I heard "Blackout" by the Scorpions. Last show I saw pre-covid was Maiden in Houston on the "Legacy of the Beast" tour. My bucket list now includes Carcass along with Alter Bridge.

The latter years of Death I always considered them to be kind of the "Tool of Death Metal" if that makes any sense. They progressed the genre in ways that few other bands in that era were doing. So much of the scene kind of devolved into trying to either "out-tech" each other, or "out-brutalize" each other. But Death did their own thing, retaining their sense of melody in the way that an old school British Heavy Metal band would have. Their discography in the 90s ended up being like Iron Maiden's discography in the 80s IMO. That same high quality of stuff one album after another. Also -- that drummer is Gene Hoglan. One of the greatest metal drummers ever. You've heard him in the newer Testament songs you've listened to. Total badass.

If I am honest the "Out tech" and "Out brutalise" is the reason why it's become stagnant. I really do agree with what you said. It's why I like Old Skool Death metal rather than modern, because it's all so new and incredible sounding.

This is the first Death song I ever heard. One of my friends at the university (who was very much into thrash and doom but not at all into death metal) told me that I "just have to hear that - it's so incredibly technical and beautiful!" I remember sitting at his couch, listening to this song and just nodding my head, grinning like an idiot because this was so unbelievably skillful and enjoyable. "Symbolic" instantly became the first death metal record I bought (followed by quite a couple others, of course ^^). Over time I came to realize that I slightly prefer "Leprosy", "individual thought patterns" and "human" over this one but "symbolic" still stands out as one of the undisputed classics in my metal collection. - just as Death stand out as one of the most unique, creative, skillful and jawdropping bands I ever listened to. There are quite some other death metal bands that are perhaps faster, more brutal, more technical, more progressive and so on ... but Death is - in my opinion - the epitome of merging skill, heaviness, melody, brutality, philosophy (oooh yes, read those lyrics!) and enjoyment into one seamless, jawdropping extreme music experience.

Interesting choice with your favorite albums from these guys. I always put Scream bloody gore, Leprosy, and Spiritual healing in one category. That being their angry, young larval phase. Human was the pupate record. Individual thought patterns was the adult butterfly flying and looking good. Symbolic must have been the act of butterflies fuckin..... mating, obviously. Then the sound of perseverance was the post coital twilight phase prior to the end but as dumb as butterflies are for an analogy regarding such a killer fucking band, it's that there was that chrysalis moment and then full color, fully able band just soaring, totally un-incumbered by gravity.

R.I.P. Chuck. I’m not the biggest death metal guy but Death is one of my all time favorites. Slowly they got more and more progressive and Chuck always had lyrics more about the human condition and life itself as apposed to blood guts and demons. Lol. If you go through the discography he starts off with stereotypical horror on the first album than slowly start to find him become more introspective about his own views of the external world and his emotions and views on humanity. He becomes extremely poetic and we see not just his views but him and who he was himself growing and becoming ever so wise. Absolutely a dive bomb of a band to get into. They have captured my soul for sure

This was the first Death track I ever heard, maybe 4 or 5 years after Chuck's passing. At the time, I don't think I knew how to process it. I never heard anything as fast and complex. It would'nt be until about 2016 when I really started to dive deep into their discography, and I have to say Symbolic is one of the greatest albums ever composed. Not only is the musicianship top-tier, the lyrics are very insightful and meaningful. For an album quickly approaching it's 30th anniversary, it still sounds incredibly fresh and current.

Great reaction. I think my favourite song by Death is 'The Philosopher.' Honestly, it blew me away years ago and it still stands the test of time. The MV for that one is insane. For someone with such an abrasive and powerful singing voice Chuck Schuldiner (RIP) was by all accounts a very kind person. Notably you'd find plenty of pictures of him wearing a t-shirt with kittens/cats on. People mocked him relentlessly for it but he didn't care, he loved animals too much. Google 'Chuck Schuldiner cats' and some great pictures pop up, including with his dog. He was technically gifted and really was ahead of his time in so many ways I think. Especially since metal in the 80s/90s was traditionally very macho.

Another of my favorite bands, also death metal - check out Kalmah. All their songs are fantastic, but I'll suggest Outremer as one of my personal favorites.

One of my all time favorite bands! And this was the era when they had Gene "The Atomic Clock" Hoglan on drums. One of the most badass heavy metal drummers ever, played with a bunch of great bands, and a couple shitty ones, lol.

Awesome video man i love to see you enjoying the shit out of Death. To me this IS the best metal album ever to have spawned the lyrics are so god damn haunting and dark but beautiful and the music so unique agressive and yet forgiving .. Goosebumps every time, Id rather sell my gf than my symbolic vinyl record ❤️ have you heard Artillery? A danish trashmetal band that are very unique and the riffs kick ass so hard that blood runs out of the rectum.. I love to see you do either khomaniac or by inheritance or dont believe. Have a great one m8 🤘😎🤘
