A tile shower niche not only provides an area to keep shampoo and other items neatly stored, but it provides an opportunity to install a decorative feature tile such as a paper face mosaic. Paper face mosaics, as opposed to mesh mounted, allow the use of a clear glass. This particular mosaic is from the Vihara collection by Sonoma Tilemakers. Click here to see the full line of colors and shapes:sonomatilemakers.com/vihara/
These tiles go for $36 a sheet or $42 a square foot. If you would like to purchase, send me a message at www.tilecoach.com/.
If you need help on your tile project, you can sign up for a coaching plan here: www.tilecoach.com/plans-pricing

Next time get some 1/4" James Hardie backer board. Cut it a few inches larger in each direction of the niche. Then apply the tiles to the board with the mortar and wait for it to dry. Then cut the tiles and the Hardie board to the size of the niche. You can use a tile saw or grinder depending on the tiles. Then you install the whole board with mortar to the niche. Works really well for intricate mosaics and saves a ton of time.

@@claudiagostenko3051 No. Kerdi board is poor choice as a mounting/handling substrate. The Kerdi would need to be sealed at edges, impossible with mosaics already in place. What this guy is doing, at least I think so, is building niche with waterproof membrane or substrate, sealing seams and mortaring as required by oe. He’s then using 1/4 Hardiebacker as a mosaic mounting substrate. Then securing the Hardiebacker-mosaic assembly using thinset into the watertight niche. Adding another 1/4” of material at back would be potentially problematic to niche utility in std 2x4 framing. I prefer Isaac’s technique but the Hardiebacker substrate I could see as functional

I LOVE watching a master at work. I did my firs full shower recently. Never touched tile before hand and it came out nice! It was a real battle mentally, I wanted to give up so bad and its not perfect but it was a huge accomplishment. I envy how neat and even your tiles on the walls are! I bought a used MK660 wet saw and the rails are bad so i'm getting crooked cuts, I would love for you to do a video on the cutting tools you use regularly and what you like.

Very nice!! I sell a few Lunada Bay paper face glass products. I was kinda surprised their install video that suggests back buttering them with a mini paint roller. They also suggest pulling at a 45 and flat to the wall as you did, they also suggest using a trowel as a guide to keep the unpulled part flat while rolling the pulled paper over the back side of the trowel.

I got so tired of the frustration of working with mosaics that now I set my small intricate mosaics to a quarter inch Hardi board, then I cut the whole thing on my wet saw as one piece. If I damaged any tiles in the process I just repair it before I install. This also allows me to adjust my grout joints easier. It also is a lot less mess and like yourself I like to set it on top of my bottom plate so the watersheds easier. Then I can install my side and top. This is even more helpful when I am including my niche in a continuous band where you tile those sidewalls of the niche because it allows you to keep your pattern continuous and you only lose the thickness of your saw blade at the corners which is really not noticeable. It an make your Schluter side trim a little tricky but you have to plan ahead.

When pressing the tiles into the thinset, I would use a grout float. Makes it easy to ensure all the tiles are even, especially along the edges and in the corners.

My favorite way to install mosaic details like back of the niche, borders, waterfalls and such, is to do them first on a separate panel. Basically, I make them into one oversize tile, grout and all. Let it fully cure before cutting it to size on the tile saw. Easy peasy and perfection every time.

Very nice clean, looking tile and install. The color and feel reminds me of water, and an Egyptian, Morocco, etc….theme. Very nice. 21:02 >consistently inconsistent< saying is 100% TRUE, along w/ knowing when to walk away and quit fiddling w/ it; as it can make things worse (told me that once…..have to learn and recognize when to “walk away” from tile, grout, etc….setting)👍🏻 Those Black Friday deals come sooner and sooner each year (IMO, takes the specialness and joy of Black Friday and thanksgiving away, compared to how was as a kid “long ago now”) and can’t believe how fast time going by….. Cheers Issac and gang 🦃

I agree with Kelly West ~ you will avoid the inconsistent horizontal grout spacing by installing the tile on Kerdi membrane or 1/4" foam or cement board, then trimming it to fit the niche.

Probably best to run them down behind your finished bed, but i'd water proof it first so that water won't wick up the wall, unless you are waterproofing the top, then it won't matter

i had a tile last week i absolutely could not score and snap or cut with any luck... finally laid the tile on top of another tile and cut a slit in the tile with a grinder and let the grinder wheel hover in the slot as i slid the glass thru the grinder it cut perfectly and i found this out on accident. lol and literally this tile would just explode just trying to score...

I think is better to use 3/16 x 5/32 or 1/4 x 3/16 notch for the small glass tile so the mortar is not going true the grout lines and you don’t need to smooth it out 1/4 notch. I think is better to use grout float for pushing the tiles for a smooth edge overall very nice job.

Any paper-faced glass falls apart with wet saw. As dude says. I usually just set all I can for the field. Then remove the paper and individually wet cut the perimeter pieces. Especially with thin, or skinny glass, most snap cutters will yield an infuriating aggravation trying to score n snap that tiny. And I've yet to find a Glass dry cutting blade that doesn't chip.

What's the idea behind notch troweling and then reducing to flat? Has anyone just used a flat trowel, or even drywall knife to initially just flat trowel from the first pass to eliminate trowel marks showing behind glass? I just don't get 2 trowel passes, one with notched, then a flatening behind. When someone can just flat trowel from the get-go. I totally appreciate this dude's work. And have been following from tutorials, to failures.
@rasmorgan11
@rasmorgan11 2 жыл бұрын
With glass you don’t want to see the trowel lines or air bubbles through the tile, so you flat the notched thinset so it still has body and not super flat right to the wall..he is doing it the right way
@t0kinl3lunts
@t0kinl3lunts 2 жыл бұрын
Flat trowel straight away won't give you the right thickness. Notched first to get the correct amount, then flatten, trying not to remove any.
@MoneyManHolmes
@MoneyManHolmes 2 жыл бұрын
Well the notches scrape against the backer so you have an even amount of material across the entire surface. I’m sure some people out there can become skilled enough to just free hand it with a smooth trowel.

What is that hideous niche base with the totally unaesthetic small cut piece on the right side? Not even golden ratio or even with the vertical grout line from the tiles above and below. As much as a pain in the butt these kind of tiles may be to install they make the room pop !! Please explain how anyone can install them the wrong way around why it is clearly written 'Mount This Side Out' - can't American people read ?? installing the sill before the back wall of the niche isn't a preference - it's part of the waterproofing system - not sure why you spent so much time talking about to and then removing the paper as that made this video bad to watch. Cheers.
