In my opinion the most cruel thing in their closing statements was to say that JD never ever had taken responsibility for things that happened in his life. He was already abused by his own mother - the most cruel thing for any child - and still managed to grow up, build a career, in the end not to kill himself because of his soul's wounds. He became a parent himself, did it much better than his mom and raised two kids who obviously love him. He took responsibility for SO MUCH that was happening to him and still does. I feel that his outer calmness is just heroic. He would have so many reasons to explode because people treating him like shit and he manages to cope with it without hurting anyone else than himself. I have great respect for this man

@@shel_311 yeah look, she permanently contradicts herself. She doesn't know how to leak information and in the same breath she could've done much worse if she really wanted to. The big thing about the op ed is that she doesn't explicitly even mention Jonny, she talks about being a survivor of domestic abuse and focuses on coming out of it and being in a position of power. So it could be argued that intent of the article wasn't to tarnish his name, but rather to empower other women.

She really doesn't understand how reputation works. Of course, a dozen jury members can't restore his reputation, but him telling his story and showing evidence to an impartial jury AND to the *ENTIRE WORLD* who are tuning into this case *IS* restoring his reputation. He's actually being afforded the opportunity to tell his story, prove his story, without the radical toxicity of a movement beating him into the ground. People can actually pay attention to what he's saying, to what he's proving, and draw their own conclusions. So even if that jury sides with Amber Heard in THIS case...it doesn't matter because in the court of public opinion -- which has jurisdiction over reputation -- he's already won. That's the POINT. I'm sure he doesn't want to lose the case about defamation, and I'm sure he won't, but restoring his reputation is about making sure the truth gets told, his side of the story heard, and for his experiences to finally be understood and respected. THAT'S the reputation part. As for the defamation part, it's really rich that they're just trying to reverse uno card him by just accusing him of what he's taking Amber Heard to trial for. It's very, "I'm suing you for defamation, you ruined my life with accusations of domestic abuse because I left you." "NOT IF I SUE YOU FOR DEFAMATION AND RUINING MY LIFE WITH ACCUSATIONS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE BECAUSE I LEFT YOU FIRST."

In other words this trial is about him defaming Amber in the media... Most people are not going to follow this story the way a juror would. They are not isolated only looking at evidence. They are not jumping into a mob. Johnny has already been convicted of abuse by a high UK court. It's not illegal to talk about being abused if your spouse was literally convicted of abuse. It's pure harassment.

@@nekomime3282 In other words implies that's what I'm saying, but it isn't. If there's anyone who was willing to put Johnny Depp on blast but is doubling down to support Amber Heard when it's become evident that she was the abuser....that person is sexist. It has nothing to do with supporting a victim of domestic violence, and everything to do with blind, angry mysandry.

@@kipo1456 incredibly harmful not just to the accused but to the trust and understanding lent to the victims that come forward that we fully intend to believe and support them. I think it's important that we still do, but the more people betray that trust with lies, the more likely it is people are going to be apprehensive about believing a victim and it could happen at a time when a victim needs to be blindly believed as once they would have been. There are a lot of lies an ex can tell, particularly an abusive ex, but perhaps the most damaging of all time is the false allegation of domestic violence. I'm barely a minute into this and already I'm enraged at the blatant manipulation attempt. Yes, by the first amendment, she has the right to write/say whatever she wants; HOWEVER, there is an enormous difference. The purpose of the first amendment is to allow people to be able to speak out about our government without fear of punishment. Meaning, we are free to voice our opinions about our President without having to worry we'll be thrown in prison or face a firing squad. (Think N. Korea, The Soviet Union, Putin's Russia, Henry VIII, Alice in Wonderland, etc.) Also, free speech is meant to protect government employees from being fired by their government employers for talking trash about their government businesses. If you work at Burger King and loudly criticize your boss's shady business dealings, free speech will not apply. You still have the freedom to say whatever you want, but you won't be protected under the first amendment for saying it. You can be fired. What I'm trying to say is, Mr. Depp isn't the government, so Miss Heard can absolutely face repercussions for what she wrote. I think this case has turned out to be an amazing example of what can qualify as libel. I'm sure precedence has previously been set, but wouldn't it be hilarious if future generations, in future libel/defamation litigations, would need to study the case notes and history from this lawsuit as a point of reference before proceeding with their own lawsuits. Either Rottenborn thinks the jury is a bunch of idiots or he himself is one. (I guess both of those assumptions prove that he actually is the idiot.)

Spot on. Freedom of Speech, which is protected by law, not just in the United States with their First Amendment but in all constitutional democracies means that you can express a verbal opinion or write an article, make comments in the inter web..but that right doesn’t mean that there won’t be consequences for those words if those words are untrue or inflammatory. Freedom of speech doesn’t cancel out other protections for individuals that exist within the law, namely libel, slander or any other redress for any other harm that has been inflicted. People tend to forget that when they say they have the right to say anything and it’s protected under the First Amendment ( or whatever your country’s laws state), because that’s not entirely true.

That’s the difference between Johnny and Amber’s culpability for any defamatory claims on either end. And if Amber would not have written the Op-ed article and then resurected it again 2 years later for the whole world to see... This trial would never have happened. In Depp's 58 years of living, with several women, not one of them had anything bad to say about him... Quite the opposite. Amber Heard is the only one who claims abuse. THE ONLY ONE... There is not a single shred of evidence that Depp abused Heard. Not one. Not even on the tapes which show she punched, kicked, smacked, slapped and screamed insults at him. She is a vengeful and narcissistic Karen who brought this on herself. She created this sh_t-storm and now she is crying because it's raining down on her. She needs to learn how to let go and move on.

AH’s team closing statement was unbearable to hear. In a way, I do kinda of feel sympathy (very, very slim) for them because they’re trying to defend a liar and turn every lies she has spouted into the truth. AH kind of also has burned their career as well because they’re making a fool out of themselves for this sick twisted being. Then again, I’m sure the money that they’re getting paid for will happily comfort them.

Some of the stuff this lawyer suggested does not pass the logic test, so many examples, with a big shout out to the notion that voting against Amber is a breach of her constitutional right to free speech and that the said article never mentioned JD so she could not have foreshadowed that people would immediately demonise him as a direct result. This bloke has caught a serious case of the Ambers, just lie about a bunch of stuff and hope some sticks.

Right. As if calling out someone who's guilty of making up horrific lies and defaming another is at all the same as infringing on their right to free speech. Just another sad and pathetic attempt on her side, grasping at straws by inflating and exaggerating the facts of reality.

Wow, how disingenuous of them to intentionally misrepresent the jury instructions and testimonies while cloaking themselves with the “if you don’t like or support domestic abuse then you need to give the win to Amber” train of thought. They really do think the jurors are too stupid to understand how to fill the form out, what they need to look for, and what the case is ultimately about. Also, gotta love how Elaine wasted so much time during closing just rambling without a coherent timeline and going all over the place, leaving Rottenborn with only 6 minutes for rebuttal then using the “BUT AMERICA AND MUH FIRST AMENDMENT” speech because he had nothing else to work with. Amber passing hundreds of post it notes to them during closing didn’t help them, either … probably insisting they change shit on the fly lol. It’s why their closing arguments were just awful.

From watching the whole trial, I'm totally convinced Amber is the aggressor. She defamed Johnny, who is not perfect. He abused drugs and alcohol and lashed out at her. But, he didn't physically abuse her, but she did. Throughout the trial, she was lying, fake crying, and smirking. She's not scared of Johnny. She wanted to ruin him. In turn, she was exposed globally. She dug her own grave. She needs major therapy (still probably won't cure her cuz she can't take any blame). Depp needs to clean himself up. Go to rehab, work out, eat well, stop going into work late. Both need to understand that this happened for a reason. So learn from it. That's the only way to move forward no matter the result of the verdict.

His closing statement focused so much on trying to refute that Amber Heard's article was actually about Johnny Depp.. that's fine.. but then why was the whole trial instead about how Johnny Depp was abusive to her? Surely if you're going to fight back against defamation claims with the argument that the claims were true, and therefore it isnt defamation, you can't then later start saying that the reason it isn't defamation is because the claims were never even about him in the first place...
