This is a rebuild of my AMC 20 Narrow Track Rear Axle. This is Part 4 which includes re-gearing from the original 3.54 gears to 3.73. The Ring and Pinion gears that I will be installing are from Motive Gear. I will also cover my complete process for Ring and Pinion Setup. This includes Ring and Pinion Pattern analysis. This video will include the installation of an Eaton TrueTrac Limited Slip Differential and getting the proper setup for the new ring and pinion gears.
This series will be available in a unique KZfaq Playlist and will include the following upgrades:
- Weld the Axle tubes to the Differential Housing (strength)
- Eaton TrueTrac LSD Differential upgrade amzn.to/3O2eSv1
- Moser 1-piece Axle Kit upgrade (strength) www.summitracing.com/parts/ms...
- Motive Gear Ring and Pinion re-Gear from 3.54 to to 3.73 amzn.to/37IGrsM
- Extra Pinion Shims: amzn.to/3vuyose
- Extra Differential Side Bearing Large Shims: amzn.to/3zLT0Ph
- Drum to Disc Brake Conversion
- All new Bearings and Seals amzn.to/3uBzpiQ
- Clean and Paint the Housing
All of this is being done to prepare this axle to be reinstalled in my 1979 Jeep CJ7 which is slated to for an LS LM7 5.3L Engine swap.
Project Rowdy is a restoration on a 1979 Jeep CJ7 V8 Golden Eagle.

I have really enjoyed all your videos. I have liked few for my 79 CJ7 project. Thanks for all your help. I have 33" tires on my jeep. The problem I have is 3.31 gears. But I think I'm going with a Ford 8.8 with.4.56 gears. #ProjectRowdy.

Sweet! Thanks for the feedback. That will be a big jump in gearing. Have you used a calculator to determine your gearing? Crawlpedia (dot) com has a simple page that you will be able to see what your RPM range will be. Cheers... Mike

As always, appreciate your content. From my previous comment on the prior video, I knew when you added 39 thousands to the pinion over the factory, your pattern was going to be off. I’ve done the exact same thing. I learned that you should always start with what came out of it instead of just following the books. This video reaffirms that very well. It also proves neither of us is crazy. Great work Mike. #ProjectRowdy

I agree with you... Starting with your factory shims on the Pinion is probably the best approach. That Checking Distance was from the Ring and Pinion manufacturer and I had to give that a try first. Even though the true checking distance of my pinion was not marked and I was using a nominal measurement... It just didn't make sense. Just cost me some time (and practice) Appreciated you firstdaddy! Cheers.... Mike!

I really enjoyed the detailed description of setting up all the shims on the diff. I've watched a ton of videos on youtube of people setting up diffs and they usually show their first attempt, and then say something like "Then it took forever and was really hard, here's the finished product!". Watching you makes me more confident to work on my own Jeep! Maybe I'll finally replace that fuel pump today. #projectrowdy

I agree... the "Unbolt this.... skip the hard stuff... and re-tighten the bolts" information only makes it more mysterious. I was wondering if anyone could make heads or tails out of how I tracked it all. Go get dirty! Mike

Thanks Trevor! The main reason I try to share what I'm doing is to allow people to see/judge/critique/learn how some of these things are put together so that they may decide to do their own. Happy that you are finding some value and plan to some of your own work. These Jeeps are relatively easy to work on. You can open the engine compartment and see about every component in there.... unlike most cars today. Cheers and have fun with your CJ5 ! Mike

Mike, Great work. I had a local guy set mine up on my 72. It just worked out that he was free and I was going out of town for work. You did a fantastic job and I always love seeing how other guys solve problems. That brace setup to crush the sleeve was nice! #ProjectRowdy

Thank you Russell. I enjoy the problem solving of your videos as well. Some people look for the answer and some people look for how to get to the answer. When I was crushing that sleeve... My left foot was holding one bar, my right knee was pushing on the Axle tube, my right hand was making sure the pipe wrench didn't fall, and my left hand was working the nut. Luckily, I still had my chin free in the event it was needed. Looking forward to your next video!

Great videos!!! I swapped out the stock gears on my AMC20 to a 4:56 set last winter. I purchased that set many years ago when the Jeep had 36" tires but I never got around to installing them until after I got new 33" tires. I don't like the drive characteristics of the 33" - 4:56 pairing so I recently purchased a set of Motive 4:10 gears that I'll be installing soon. Your videos have been a great refresher on all the little details and tricks needed to properly set up gears.

@UCanDoIt2Mike 5 ай бұрын
I will…. But it might be a little while before I get to that. After my current effort of completing the Tub bottom, I going to start assembling the frame suspension and axles. Shortly after that I’ll get to assembling the engine, trans and core case with all the goodies. I believe I already have purchased the slave side of the hydraulic clutch that I’m going with. It’s all based on the Advanced Adapters bell housing that I will be using.

I've been watching AMC 20 videos for reference because my 80 CJ has oil leak on the passenger wheel AND it has 2:73 gears. Originally the tires were 28" tall. I got mine and it has 30" tall tires and is really boggy accelerating. This is with a 304 V8 and 4 speed manual trans. with a 1 to 1 4th gear. I have a set of 31" tires for it now so it will be even worse. I want it for street driving, some highway driving, towing a light trailer and some light off road trails. I've looked at gearing calculators telling me engine RPM at 65mph with "x" gear ratios. It looks like a 3:5x or 3:73 will work best. I know you're far away from finishing yours for a direct answer on your new gear setup but do you remember what RPM your jeep was running at highway speed with the 3:54 gears along with what tire size you were running? I think it helps to talk to people that are actually driving them. Thanks!
@UCanDoIt2Mike
@UCanDoIt2Mike 2 жыл бұрын
For 30 Years, my jeep had 31" tires, 304 V8, T18A with 1:1 4th Trans, and 3.54 gears. But I do not remember what the RPMs where. On Highway, I only took it to 55Mph. I was not very knowledgeable or thought much about Rear Gearing, but I Do Not remember ever thinking that there was an issue. I also used the Gear Calculators and found it interesting that many are using 2200-2300 RPMs at highway speed (65 or 70). I actually jumped in my 2014 F-150 and took it to 70MPH and found it was running at 1700. That made me more confused with the technical approach. I am going to 33" tires and believe my right choice should be either 3.73 or 4.10. I went with 3.73. My new Jeep configuration will be 5.3L-V8 (twice the HP or original), AX15 with .79 final drive ratio, and the 3.73. I still will probably max out at 65MPH on highway (It's a Jeep) and feel, I will have enough torque to pull the hills. Hope this helps. You can check back with me when I get it on the road.... but you will probably bet me. I'm completely disassembled. Mike
@mrweeby1961
@mrweeby1961 2 жыл бұрын
Just like you I am looking at what my modern Hemi powered truck and Challenger tach at 65-70 mph on the highway and obviously its just like you mention, a lot lower RPM than the calculators we're talking about. While the RPM the calculators give as ideal are not really high, they aren't low either and wouldn't help with fuel economy. If I had an overdrive trans. like you're using I would pick a lower gear ratio maybe. I'm still a ways from getting it back on the road. It has the old crappy motorcraft ignition still and last time I started it the engine wouldn't shut off... the coil was still hot/getting voltage keeping the engine running. I just idled it down and choked off the airflow to the carb. to shut it off. IF, when I run the engine again, it's ok I'll be swapping to an HEI distributor and scrapping the old ignition parts. Anyway, it's a work in progress and I'm trying to forward think of what I may need to do to get it where I want it. A big shock is what parts cost now! These videos are a big help. Glad you're doing them.
