Love youe video Mike ! Im doing a 1983 CJ 7 . Can save the cowel panel and fire wall . Havent got to frame yet . Think after degreaser i would clean it up with enamel reducer after . Then hit it with 220 grit where you blasted it if you can ...flat surfaces anyway. Enamel reducer again then spray coating. Think im going all the way with Eastwood products . Thanks Mike and good luck .

I owned an "80 CJ7, a '91 YJ, a '98 TJ now a '18 JLU. This brought back many memories. The '91 had many little improvements that Chrysler after buying Jeep had been factory installed. First was a seal on the firewall where you found the water leak from the missing seam seal. Also this gasket served two purposes, first it sealed the seam but also, as a cushion as the hinge pins for the hood would wear out causing the hood to be metal on metal contact. On old CJ's most people would place a split garden hose under the hinge at this area to stop the noise. (Cowl Seal, Hood to Cowl OE Reference: 55008119) The second item was an inner fender splash shield that was located at the rear of the inner fender to close the gap to the firewall (jeep yj fender splash shield 5501 0838) They also had Rear Corner Body Splash Guard to keep the road spray from going into the two rear corners. All these on my '80 jeep had been created out of aluminum and riveted into place by the previous owner. In the drivers rear corner was a check valve in the gas tank vent line to prevent leakage if you tipped over and the splash shields protected this area. Can't wait to see the finished CJ!!! Thanks for the memories.

Thanks for sharing that information. I believe my drivers rear had a little shield that I took off and had no ideas what or why it was there. in that same area was the a Roll-over valve like you mentioned. These are really fun and somewhat simple vehicles. Love the fact that you have made all of the upgrades to new models. Cheers.... Mike

Man going back and reviewing this stuff after not working on my jeep for a long time brings it all back. I was thinking that blower motor was the same as either the Chevy Vega or non-A/C late 70's Chevy trucks. I had both in the past but memory is a little fuzzy now. I've had problems with replacement heater core not being a drop in fit too. Having the hood, dash and windshield off sure helps! This is excellent work and I will probably refer back when I start on mine again.

Can I use 80 Amp relays ? What would happen?
@UCanDoIt2Mike
@UCanDoIt2Mike Ай бұрын
To be honest, I am not sure. With that said, I believe they would work as they are rated higher than needed and your fuse will still protect the circuit as designed. However, for the cheep price of relays, I would suggest purchasing the correct ones. Mike.

It's been a minute...but if you have a press (I thought you did) you could make a 2 part wood mold and press it so you don't get the dents from hammering it.

Good point! When I needed to put a rib in a floor panel of an ‘81 Scrambler, I made the “negative” mold in a piece of 2x4, smoothed a piece of rebar the length I needed, and used a press to sandwich the patch panel between the rebar and wood. Worked like a charm!

Question.. wouldn't you want to seal the body with epoxy primer then put your fiberglass/ body filler over that since it is porous? Then you would have to shoot over the filler with epoxy primer again to seal it in... otherwise it will allow water to move freely between the metal and the repair?
@UCanDoIt2Mike
@UCanDoIt2Mike Ай бұрын
So, I’m not an expert, but from what I have gathered. Both short strand fiberglass and body filler can be applied direct to metal or after epoxy primer. For the perspective of porosity… odd filler is porous, but I believe that Fiberglass cures to more of plastic or non porous finish. I knew that I was going to be doing quite a bit of sanding to get the finish to where I wanted it and thought I would lay it down first. It will be top coated with Epoxy Primer to seal it prior to the finished top coat of bed liner. My next steps is to Epoxy Prime the bottom and when I do, I will hit this section as well. Mike.

Thanks for the video. Very helpful. In the process of replacing my rotors, hubs, and brakes for my 77 CJ7, but stuck at one point. At minute 12 of your video, after you have bolted on the drive flange and before you replace the C-clip, you place a tool behind the rotor and it moves the axle end out far enough for you to place the C-clip. What is that tool and how did you get it to move? I'm at that point to place the C-clip, but I can't get the axle end out enough to place the C-clip
@UCanDoIt2Mike
@UCanDoIt2Mike Ай бұрын
To slide the shaft out enough to get the c-clip installed, I just used a very large screw driver. It helped me leverage the axle as I placed it behind the u- joint and in front of the axle housing. It slides out very easy. You could do it with your hand, but the screwdriver or other type of prying device will help hold it out there while you install the clip. Mike

I realize that this project is probably seven years old and I cannot believe I haven’t run into your sight before. I am a retired aerospace engineer/aircraft mechanic with 50 years of experience doing precision work. I am impressed with your design and my project looks similar to yours in many ways. (I’m still in a design phase). However I am most impressed with your drawings!!!!!! I can not find a simple CAD app that doesn’t require me to have extensive self training before I start a project that I have in my head. I still use drafting practices I learned in high school with graph paper and a good mechanical pencil. Can you PLEASE let me know what app you are using. I looked for a Visio app and couldn’t find it. That would be a game changer for me Thank you in advance. Mike G🍺🇺🇸

I use Microsoft Visio. I’ve been using it prior to Microsoft purchasing the company that originally created it. It is extremely simple. Drag a rectangle I just to the work area and resize it with handles. The bottom tells you the size of you are looking to create a scaled drawing. You can define the drawing scale. Most of my projects get a custom drawing to go along with my other documentation for my purposes but I like to share them as well. If you could find a cheap license to an 2010 + version. You’d be in great shape.
