This is not just a rx 7000 issue, this issue exists for every amd user using two monitors. The thing is u know this but yet you make this a more positive video. im stilll having to run my monitors that are native 1440p 165 hz Gigabyte M32Q + 1080p 144hz AOC 24g2 @ 120hz & 60hz respectively . It's not good enough to just surrender to that, which is what your suggesting. More needs to be said about this .

Disappointing they are still having issues like this. I wonder if they ever fixed it on the RX400/500 series cards? After exiting a game, my RX480 8GB would idle at 40-ish watts at the desktop. It was in the known issues forever until I got a 6700XT. The fix for that was to force close (via Task Manager) one of those AMD applications. It's been so long I've forgotten which.. And I can't look on my own computer because my motherboard fried. A mosfet or something popped and there's some kind of liquid running down the back of my Asus ROG B450-F Gaming II. Had a 5900x in there since last June(?) and all was well. Turned my computer off and it never started back up lol. Ridiculous. No PBO either. Just Curve Optimizer. I swear I think Windows 11 killed it. I had deleted the hibernation mode file and disabled it, but somehow accidentally put it to sleep instead of shutting it down. Because I went to shut it down, saw that it actually went to "Sleep", so I "woke it" then shut it down. That killed it. Asus ROG B550-F Gaming Wi-Fi II is supposed to be here tomorrow. Almost went MSI.. and maybe I should have. Either way, assuming it didn't fry everything on my computer, I'll email Asus and Newegg about it and see what they have to say.

The only issue with this fix is that you're forced to use 6bit color depth. For me, having main monitor at 1440p 144hz (freesync on) and then 2nd at 1440p 60hz (freesync off) on 2nd, I get 10w power draw on my XTX. Works for 4k main monitor/1440p with same settings, giving 15w power draw while maintaining 8bit color depth.

I thought it was a well known fix. For multi-monitor setups, if you play only using 1 of them for gaming, editing etc. You even don't have to bother with custom resolutions. Just go to Windows settings > System > Display > Advanced Display Settings and there change refresh rate for your 2nd, 3rd etc. monitors to 60hz. Your main monitor can be kept without any changes. Voila - Enjoy 10W Idle instead of 150W.

I'll definitely keep this in mind for when I build my PC! Appreciate it! By the way, if you're looking to make more benchmarking videos including NFS unbound, I would recommend to mainly check out some of the more intensive scenarios, mainly starting a race inside the city area. When you have all those cars onscreen as well as all the buildings and pedestrians and traffic cars, the FPS takes a hit the hardest there, and the same thing happened with its predecessor, NFS Heat. Just something to consider!

Oh, and it was on an RX 6600 XT, which makes me wonder how could the same ploblem happen on a different OS and a GPU from a different generation.

Could you create a comparison video between AMD Wattman and MSI Afterburner, highlighting the pros and cons of each? Please compare the features available in both programs and recommend which one you would prefer for AMD graphics cards as well as Nvidia cards. Currently, I am struggling to decide which one to use as both have advantages that I would like to utilize, but using both simultaneously causes conflicts. Additionally, could you create a video demonstrating how to create a modern, aesthetically pleasing OSD design for MSI Afterburner? Many OSDs often look cheap, and I have seen some users create their own designs that look great in benchmarking videos. I know this is a LOT to ask, but I am sure it will be helpful to many people
@AncientGameplays

Its easy, Afterburner is the best for monitoring (much more advanced) and Adrenalin is better for OC/UV as you can't undervolt easily with Afterburner
@vyathaen
@vyathaen Жыл бұрын
biggest difference for me is the fan tuning. Adrenalin allows you to set Zero RPM and does not use any cpu cycles, msi afterburner will always run in the background even if you are not using the OSD, consuming like 1-2% cpu , which admittedly most people wont care about ,but I am one of those trying to squeeze every last drop of performance.

Previously anything above 100Hz would give 38W idle, with 100Hz running at around 10W idle. With this method I was able to make a 150Hz custom resolution, which doesn't max out the Vram clock and runs at 10W. I managed to fix the problem on my 7900XT dual monitor 1440p 144Hz + 1080p 144Hz setup using Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) by increasing the vertical blanking on both monitors. Both are still running at 144Hz. Color Depth is still on the highest bpc for both monitors (10bpc and 8bpc). All of this was done on Adrenaline Version 23.7.1. These values will be different for every monitor model, brand, refresh rate and resolution so do not copy these numbers. This is just the result of me messing around with the vertical blanking (and nothing else inside CRU) on my specific monitors: LG 27GN800-B, 1440p 144Hz: from 103 (default) to at least 109 and ViewSonic XG2401, 1080p 144Hz: from 77 (default) to at least 82. I tried these values separately while having the other monitor on default, didn't work. It had to be done for both if I want it to work while using both. I first increased both in bigger increments and at some point the memory clock started going down, from there I decreased them by smaller increments until the memory clock went back up again to find the lowest vertical blanking I can set without it going back up because I don't know if increasing it by too much could affect the lifespan of a monitor so I'd rather keep it at minimum. The memory clock now fluctuates between 49 and 112 MHz with about 25W according to the Adrenalin Software. Before all of this it didn't go any lower than 909 MHz. The power consumption goes back up to around 45W while watching videos on a browser with hardware acceleration. After turning the hardware acceleration off I can let the video under which I'm typing this comment play and the Total Board Power stays between 25W and 27W. (I'm using the AMD Performance Overlay to read the total board power because it will fluctuate between 35 and 50 if I check the numbers in the performance tab of the Adrenalin Software.) I don't know if this comment could be helpful to anyone but I thought this might be interesting for some people.

Thanks for sharing this fix, I was searching for fixes a couple weeks ago because I noticed this problem when connecting a secondary 60Hz monitor to my 6750XT. I found nothing on the webs, just people recommending to learn to live with that fact because AMD states it's "normal" behavior for the VRAM to act like that (which is complete BS). My fix was to clock down my main monitor from 120Hz to 60Hz, right now we're in a crazy tropical heatwave and I decided to give up framerates to keep my system a bit cooler.

@@AncientGameplays I'm sure for a good portion that's true. However, I've tried a 6800xt, and after installing any drivers it wouldn't post. Went into safe mode, fresh windows installs, complete DDU. The most extreme of things. And still it just wouldn't post with any driver installed. returned it. Then got a 7900xtx and at first it was ok, it was great performance in allot of the newer games, but then some older ones like assassins creed origins ran terribly. 70fps in the main city. Just odd performance. But then the "new" drivers came out and games would just crash on me. Out of no where I'd get a "Driver timeout" SO then of course I went through the proccess of completely fresh wiping the previous, chipset first, then drivers, and vise versa. No matter what I did the problems persisted. And huge frame spikes. Went back to the previous drivers? and boom ran fine. Each time this happened, I got a Nvidia card after and never, have I ever, needed to do such things. There is a clear quality difference between the two. Even in this video you mention the issues many people with 7900xtx have suffered. I like AMD, and I'm a bit of a fanboy for AMD. I want to see them continue to succeed. But I'm also not into personal incredulity. I can see the quality difference. AMD works well so long as your current build, bios and all things align with the stars and it likes you. I don't want to make excuses for AMD, or any glitches by labeling them basic steps as some kind of acceptable norm. It's not acceptable. Be they simple, complex, or easy. Deff when paying 1000+ Friend from work (I work at microcenter) also had to return his 7900xtx, second monitor only had video artifacts. We hooked it up to our test bench and the results were replicated. But on the 3rd test bench it worked fine. This is absurd. Turning on metrics within AMD caused lag spikes when using it. Replicated even on latest drivers. We tested it, that's right again on 4 test benches ranging from AMD to Intel current, and previous gens. 2 lag spiked, 1 didn't, and 1 did once in a while. If we throw every issue away as "well just don't use it" or "Not a big deal, use Afterburner" It's an endless perpetual excuse for something that is broke. one test bench, when the driver crashed during a certain test, it literally corrupted the entire windows install. We test things heavily at microcenter in our tech department. It looks like a mad scientist lab behind the doors. there is without a doubt, without a single doubt, more issues on AMD then on Nvidia, and overall your performance will be more consistent across a large scale of games, not just the ones tested here, or on other channels known to work well perpetually. At the microcenter I work at in rockville md, we get so many AMD cards back for THESE very issues. I have real data I deal with on the daily. Not just the experience of a sole individual. We actually now give out a disclaimer to those looking to do their first build. that if you Choose AMD an advanced user is recommended. We never get an Nvidia return, or have any issues ever stated aside from literally coming DOA. Again, this is based on actual daily data and statistics. There is a difference in quality, and certainly in ease of use and reliability. This isn't to say not buy AMD. But to ignore the endless list of possible issues is not just ignorant, but dishonest to those watching. We should never allow our EGO, or desire to protect what we love to cloud our judgment. With this said, saying I do not have a smoother experience on Nvidia than I did on AMD is rather silly. I'll let that one slide. Very aggressive, and honestly delusional. I like you, I love your videos. But you're not an engineer, and you don't have the data I have based on thousands and thousands of people that we deal with. No, if someone pays 1000+ it should work, and it should all work. All the time. Aside from a shadow flicker or something in 1 game that requires a patch. Remember, this is real Data, it's not based on 1 individuals data or a following of those who are getting good results. this is based on Unbiased data from random people. your comments are littered with people having issues. having a fix, or something you can do yourself doesn't make it ok. It makes it something that's broke, that YOU'RE needing to fix YOURSELF. And instead of spending that valuable time playing and enjoying your games or content, you're spending it watching videos on how to maybe fix what's broke. It's not ok.

Helpful. Adding to this, if you play on a tv screen, mine is 4k 120 hz lcd, don't forget to update your firmware and buy good hdmi cables, 2.0, or 2.1 version. this could also triggers consumption and compatibility problems....with the graphic card driver. everything is solved for me, since previous AMD drivers. but some games may have HDR, vsync, or resolution (fullscreen, borderless window,....) problems. Certainly driver issue. but companies can't test every system pairing made by users......... don't forget cables ! and keep on Fabio, 😊

Cool trick, thank you! Once custom resolution failed me: when I connected both a 720p TV and a 1080p monitor onto the same HDMI slot using an HDMI splitter (so that my TV shows the monitor screen at 1080p), my monitor changed resolution down to 720p, and I could not select 1080p in the display settings. Not only deleting custom resolutions is tricky (because you cannot delete active resolutions), but also only factory reset helped me bring the higher resolution back. I don't know why, but at least I keep every display at 60 Hz, so no idle power consumption issues. Then why did I experiment with custom resolutions? I saw that weird 59.9 Hz refresh rate on one of my displays I wanted to get rid of...

Will have to try this out. Dual monitor (old Dell 60Hz office monitor and new Gigabyte M27Q 170Hz, Freesync on) draws idle power around 40-45W with 6800 XT, VRAM locked at 2138MT/s (as set with overclock). VRAM downclocks properly and power draw drops to 11-12W when refresh rates are set to 60 & 60, 60 & 120, etc from Windows display settings...

Are you sure color bit depth goes down to 6 bit. That is really low. If you have a display that has 6 bit + FRC that is fine because the display takes 8 bit signal and "fakes" it on the 6 bit panel. But if you have a native 8 bit panel sending only 6 bit might actually be visually very noticeable. If not it might just still be 8 bit. With me only 10 bit goes away, and color gets locked to 8 bit. On my RX 580 I have the same problem with my 1080p 165HZ display. I have to manually tune a custom resolution to allow the memory to clock down during idle. I have to increase vertical blanking, but than my display shows an overlay with out of range even though it's displaying properly otherwise. Lowering from 165 to 162Hz fixes it completely.

High idle power consumption is problem with AM4 and AM5 (desktop) CPU as well. With no fix in sight. On AM4 the culprit was memory controller, with no exposed sensor, so hardware monitors don't report this draw. But the power draw is there if you measure total system draw from wall. I cant find the article anymore, but someone tracked it down with help of thermal camera. On flipside, under heavy load AMD CPU's themselves has better efficiency than Intel, but Tech Notice channel made a calculation that this still favors Intel, under typical usage as video editor

Not really, its 30W of SOC+Core+MISC, its not that bad, but yeah, on gaming its way more efficient than Intel counterparts, not even comparable

@@AncientGameplays found the article, cant link but search hardsquirrel Power consumption of Ryzen 5000 series CPUs This holds true for me as well. My everyday use PC is based on 5900x, and I recently made Intel i5-12400 PC to replace failing NAS and PLEX etc system. Latter pulls 7 with short jumps to 11w when idle, without much tinkering with C states, AMD pulls 30+. I'm measuring from wall, not with hardware monitors. Like I said, AM4 had one crucial sensor hidden, no idea about AM5. I don't have AM5 myself, but I've read people reporting 50W pull. Same inefficiency on AMD is seen on low usage. All of which is very strange because AMD laptop series do not have this issue(I tested an AMD-based miniPC myself), and AMD is very efficient on high usage

The only thing that worked was CRU and soon as i upgraded to a proper dell panel with 144hz the issues were gone. So in conclusion, some panels are just plain inefficient, requiring more memory hz to keep up with the refresh rate, unless you use amazing tools like CRU and Radeon Settings.
