You know good point. I do notice that when videos go for Voodoo 2 setups it's the unobtainium SLI maybe just because it was so hard to get back in the day. I certainly would at best would have had this very sort of card (8 MB single) and nothing else even though I ended up going from Voodoo and then nVidia. Feels more period correct and it's fun!

You're so right. I so much hate those voodoo2 maniacs, that taps their ego, showing only 2 of them in SLI. and usually have even 2 others in reserve. While others struggles to get at least one. I too have only 1 voodoo2, and I'm happy with it. Would show also only 1 v2 , as 1998 machine, because majority of people used only one voodoo2. Only maniacs of maniacs did have 2 voodoo2 cards back in the time. I remember noone personaly around me to have such setup. Most of people didnt have accelerator yet in 1998 at all. Only 2D card. These people that always want to max out everything, otherwise are ashamed to make video, are psychically ill in my mind. I'm happy you've shown K6-2 300 and not 500 overclocked to 600, as these maniacs, and also voodoo2, not SLI v2. Also, I'm glad you let 64 MB RAM, they would try to max out 128 or 256 MB, that nobody had.

This was really realistic 1998 machine, I would even say, that most of people was on Pentium 166 MMX in that time. We bought voodoo2 in december 1998, because it was too expensive early 1998.

We had Pentium 133, bought in december 97, so you were better. We also had only 2D card, well Ati 3D rage II, but we used it as 2D card, as 3D part sucked. It was basicaly something like S3 Trio64 with 4 MB RAM. I was dreaming about Pentium 166 MMX, in 1998, would be nice upgrade. But no money, as we spent in december 1997 on upgrade from 486. So, just wanted to tell you, that you could be happy. With Pentium 166MMX, it was much better gaming year. You could play Quake 1 much higher resolution in software mode, thanks to it, also Jedi Knight was much more fluent (more FPS). We struggled a lot in these games. Then we bought voodoo2 in early 1999, but that Pentium 133 holded it back. I was so much wishing we could have 166 or 200. But no, only 133 (btw it could be overclocked to 166 almost for sure, but I didnt know about overclocking back then). It screwed basicaly also my 1999 gaming year. So you could be happy with 166 MMX... it was much faster, at least 30-40% from Pentium 133.

I also remembering suffer in Hexen II, because of that Pentium 133. Well, we could at least run it in 320x240. But 400x300 was already a bit choppy (in software mode). Pentium 166 MMX would help a lot... I suffered 1998 because of it, then in 1999, that voodoo2 helped a lot, even with Pentium 133. Hexen II, MK4 and NHL 98 was biggest shock in my life, with voodoo2 (on Pentium 133) We could play also Quake 2 finally (with voodoo2), and Unreal. Unreal was kinda slow (because of Pentium 133), also Rollcage. Then I had to upgrade CPU, cause it was too slow for that Voodoo2. At the end of 1999 dream came true, with AMD k6-2 500. Finally, I had that speed of voodoo2, that rich people could have in middle 1998.

Agreed it's actually fun to experience computing as it actually was once in a while. I also have quite a few "dream machines" for the era that run everything great. This... struggles and it's actually fun part of the complete experience hah. Appreciate you watching!

You know as much as it was probably rough running on an older machine I bet you learned a thing or two about tweaking for performance. Builds character! My first real PC was a 486 SX33 and boy did I end up learning a lot trying to squeeze more juice out of that one. ​@@RiksRandomRetro Just opposite, I was affraid to tweak anything. I once screwed Windows 95 installation by something, and it was very bad at home. It was family computer. Not only this, as I was only teenager back then (around 14 years) I didnt spent a penny on that computer. And for todays money, it was like 3000$ or something like that. I really only turn it on, and go to DOS or windows, and only run exe or bat of the game. Nothing more. I would never dare to open the computer, I didnt uinderstand electricity stuff and hardware at all. It would be for book, only my story. And I'm sure, everyone have his own story. I've learned hardware and overclocking much later later, in 2006, after I had my own computer for my own money. In that time, computers were already like 3x more cheaper, than in middle 90's . So people wasnt so affraid experimenting. Problem in mid 90's was also, I didnt know english. I've learn it basicaly between 1998-2000, to be usable, to read articles in english. In our language, I didnt have much sources. But ok, I was maybe not hardware hobbiest. I only programed, mapedited and played games, so only software stuff. Yes, those 486 and Pentium 1 could be overclocked very good. Pity I didnt know about that. I was really affraid I screw up computer, that is even not mine. Basicaly father and brother builded it (brother also didnt understand hardware very good... but he was only 1 year older). And mom paid for it also, like some money. Image 14 year old, that doesnt have any information about hardware, dont know english, dont know, from where to read about it, and care only about playing games...:) No overclocking in that time, sorry. :) But it changed in 2006, as I've said. My first overclock was from 1.6 to 2.4 Ghz, Sempron64 Palermo if I remember correctly, 2800+. Perfect procesor for OC, and 50% overclock as my first one (on DFI Lan party motherboard). Yes, I 've studied 3 weeks on internet, before I've bought components.

Yep that was sort of the general plan! It's easy to get blinded by the fastest of everything but I'm finding it fun to experiment more and more with the more "average" machines as of late.

Thanks! It's been really fun sticking to (generally) a specific time. The majority of the time I'm using something more powerful than needed. That's an awesome system though! I have a very soft spot for a late Pentium rig with those sort of specs (I have and use a similar machine) since it rocks late DOS games with ease plus all that goodness of the early 95 era. As far as a Gotek I've only used it for my Amiga and with the network connection I mostly copy files that way but I'm intrigued to try it in a PC as well.

Oh sweet. Sounds like a hell of a machine for the era to say the least. Perfect specs and those components would add up in price these days thanks to the retro tax unless you get lucky.

@@RiksRandomRetro Well the K6-3 machine I have now is very similar, except I don't have a TNT 2 Ultra in it, but a Voodoo 3 3000 PCI, and instead of a Monster Sound MX 300, I have the Turtle Beach Montego II Quadzilla. Both of those sound cards are Aureal Vortex 2 Sound Cards. And the motherboard is by Gigabyte instead.

Haha fair point! I feel that by the time you are loading up an OS on a retro machine you are making some real progress perhaps leaving behind some issues with the hardware (until driver installation comes into play). It's a nice moment of zen!

Thanks for the heads up on the video quality I've been doing a bit of digging and may have to look at options there. Currently I do 1080p/60 mostly because my camera can then handle all the wonky CRT refresh rates vs shooting at 4k as I assume I probably don't want to upscale 1080 to 1440 during the render process. I'll keep investigating it though it's an intruiguing option!

Not a bad idea! But the problem I keep running into is the fact all these old spinning disks keep failing hah. But yes... I do miss the sound for sure it's part of the experience.

Very nice! It's a fun one to tinker with although I was on a Pentium 2 around this time I get the appeal of the K6-2 platform. I may make some more select updates to this machine...

I do miss the spawned installs too. Felt like such a nice nod with them understanding it'd allow more people to experience the game. Westwood didn't do spawned installations like Blizzard but at least you could play multiplayer with just one of the discs and it came with 2 so it was something!

Oof sorry the Voodoo 2 cards don't work. It stinks when old stuff like that is busted especially with artifacts which I know is hard to recover from. I keep running into the issue too that there are often plenty of AGP cards but many of the machines I built or get access to are limited to PCI which further limits options, at least what I have. Thus total hodgepodge builds are born!

Very nice! That is an incredibly solid 98 machine with a wide range of game options for sure.

Yeah it's easy to get locked in on the best of the best all the time which it feels like we rarely had (well I didn't at least). The M64 was... something lol. Either way I've had fun exploring more era appropriate computers and "realistic" setups for the day which I feel this machine really is.

You know as I wrote and recorded that line I think I went for a little bit of hyperbole but the essense came through haha! You are definitely technically correct (the best kind of correct) but I will say at least at launch I lusted after a Voodoo 2 like no other card. I still had my Voodoo 1 however and just ended up skipping it altogether for I'm pretty sure a TNT. Either way a single Voodoo 2 8 MB is fun to experience just from the sake of that feels more likely what people had, price was after all important.

@@RiksRandomRetro when the game natively supports glide, which most from the time did, the voodoos are, way faster simply because glide offloads the cpu incredibly well. I have a pair of 8mb cards in my 98 k6-2 pc, along with an ATI Rage Fury, for the best of both worlds :)

Hah very sweet setup. I'd love to give a Rage Fury a whirl but I'm saddened by the retro tax on everything these days.
