Welcome to the concluding chapter of our remarkable journey through the Dolomite Mountains (www.holimites.com/gravel1), paying tribute to the enduring legacy of Amelia Edwards. In this third and final episode, we pick up where we left off in the hamlet of Corvara, a place where Amelia herself sought refuge on a rainy day. Here, we explore the charming Church of Santa Catarina, intricately detailed in her book.
From Corvara, we continue to trace Amelia's footsteps by embarking on the ascent of Passo Gardena, a mountain pass that separates the two Ladin valleys of Val Badia and Val Gardena. Amelia's writings intriguingly describe the region's inhabitants as German-speaking, reflecting the historical context of South Tyrol during her time under Austrian rule.
In Val Gardena, we take a brief detour from Amelia's original path to enhance the rideability of our gravel bikes. Starting in Selva, we ascend towards the lush pastures and meadows of Alpe di Siusi. At this lofty vantage point, we're greeted by breathtaking views of iconic peaks, including the majestic Sassolungo, Sasso Piatto, and to the west, the magnificent Sciliar, a mountain immortalized in one of Amelia's drawings.
While Amelia's adventure concludes with her journey to Bolzano, our expedition takes a different turn as we continue our loop, returning to our starting point at the Ustaria Posta, where our adventure began two days prior. We imagine what Amelia might have done with additional days to explore the Dolomites. Without a doubt, she would have been drawn to the enchanting Funes Valley, our next destination.
Our path leads us to Funes, where we embark on the arduous ascent of the long and seemingly never-ending Passo delle Erbe. From there, we make our way back to Val Badia and ultimately return to the Ustaria Posta.
Through this journey, we pay homage to Amelia Edwards' adventure, which unfolded 151 years ago. We hope that many will be inspired to follow in our tire tracks, with the assistance of Holimites (www.holimites.com), who can organize bike and bikepacking bags rentals, and provide logistical support to ensure a seamless and memorable ride.
