America's Most Famous Music Producer, Rick Hall, spent a period of time homeless, living out of a car while battling depression before hitting it big with the "invention" of that "muscle shoals sound" with his recording studio 'FAME' in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Within a few years - he'd become a self-made millionaire. He credits the grace of God and endless hard work for pulling him out of those hard times. Known today as one of the greatest producers in the world, and the man behind that famous "Muscle Shoals Sound", his legend lives on through the music of many artists including but not limited to: Percy Sledge, The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Etta James and many more. In today's Roots Music History Documentary, we dig into the roots that grew Rick Hall and FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.

Hello, I am Rick Hall’s son. Good job with this! A couple of corrections. My Dad did speak to his mother later in life, buying her a home in Muscle Shoals and had a relationship over the last 20 years of her life. Also he had a lot more success after the Swampers left. As a matter if fact, two years after they opened Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, he was named the world’s producer of the year in 1971 in Billboard magazine and was nominated for the Grammy’s producer of the year in 1974. OH MY GOODNESS! I am so excited you watched the video!!! I put a lot of research into this so I am so very very happy that you are correcting the things that weren't right!! I always thought that he had more success after the Swampers departed and was actually very confused and perplexed that I wasn't finding what I was looking for with that! I'm also so so happy that he did reconnect with his mother. That part of the story was always so sad to me, and in some ways more sad than the parts where he had lost his bride and father because his mother was still alive but was taken from him for several years in a different way. Wow oh wow. I'm just so happy and honored you could see this! I hope I could do him some justice because he is one of my favorite people in music history.

I’m so happy to see some one of your age delving into Rick Hall. I’m a music fanatic and was so thrilled to see his documentary yet it pained me too. People like to talk about how it’s the town Muscle Shoals that created the sound and I say no! It was Rick Hall who created the Muscle Shoals sound; HE is the common denominator. Yes, artists came bringing their voices but Rick and his bands created the sound. Sadly, he’s gone on to rest and we’ve lost a legend. Thank you for your video!

Sylvia, I whole heartedly agree! It's funny....I'll be walking my dog sometimes down Music Row in Nashville and I randomly will just think of Rick Hall and his amazing ear and perfection. I don't think the music industry has seen anyone since him even come close to his caliber. And moreso than his professional success, just all of the hardships that he went through in life leading up to where he ultimately found fame.....it's such an inspiring story. I hope you subscribe and like some of the other videos, too! I love making these and hope you love watching them just as much!
