Silhouetted against the sun, the Northrop XP-79 looked like a blade ready to slice through the sky. It was designed just for that, to ram enemy bombers and tear them apart in brutal melee combat. Unlike any other plane of its time, its starship design was breathtaking for the 1940s.
The XP-79 broke the mold in more than just looks. Its bold, otherworldly design and unique configuration, where the pilot lay prone in the cockpit, made for a revolutionary flying experience.
The XP-79 was built without a traditional propeller. Instead, it relied on the XCALR-2000A-1 rotojet engines developed by Aerojet, a pioneer in jet technology.
Adding to its innovation, the XP-79 was one of the first aircraft constructed using a magnesium alloy. This lightweight material was crucial for achieving the high speeds and agility the aircraft demanded.
However, this innovation came with a dangerous risk. Magnesium posed significant challenges, including difficulties in welding and increased flammability. Tensions were sky-high when the futuristic-looking aircraft rolled onto the tarmac for its first flight. Witnesses had no idea that what was expected to be a massive leap in aviation history was about to end in devastating tragedy.

The XP-79 was NEVER intended to ram enemy aircraft. It was equipped with four .50 cal M2 machine guns. The "flying ram" concept is a myth that has been repeated so often that it has gained the status of fact.

Yeh, the only way even the idiots that ran the US air force at the time would have considered an aircraft that was only capable of ramming was if they had been given huge suitcases of money under the counter. It such an obvious nonsensical idea you really have to wonder what utter morons actually believe it. Then again, EweChube "historians"....

A dubious solution to a problem the Allies never had. German bombers were not “bristling with guns” as claimed by the narrator and conventional fighters dealt with them quite well.

Correct. German bombers were anything but heavily armed and the RAF using its scarce fighters sparingly until the very end of the Battle of Britain still managed to inflict defeating casualties to them. I suspect the allied, and much less the US, were never so desperate as to even consider a plane designed to ram other airplanes out of the sky. As someone else pointed out, the ramming concept sounds more like a myth than reality given that the XP-79 was to be armed with machine guns. It may have been intended to be very sturdy to survive extensive battle damage and people just build a myth on top of this. Just because someone says it on the internet does not mean it is true.

The design looks like it could have been equipped with 6x20mm cannon, negating the need for ramming...as desperate as Germany was in 1945, they modified Me109s for ramming missions with the hope the pilot would be able to safely bale out

This happened after the war, the USA only started production of jet engines after the British shared their technology.

WTF!!! A P 63 hit a B 17 in Texas last year and both went down! And you are saying a purpose built plane has been designed to crash into other aircraft?? uhhh.. No! I would not like to pilot this type of aircraft!!

Yes, it was intended for ramming attacks, with heavy reinforcement to allow it to survive.

The terrible tragedy in 2006 of flight GOL 1907 air colision suggests otherwise. The idea is way less crazy than it sounds. But I agree it was unrealistic to think that it would work on an acceptable rate of losses.
