This movie is so incredible. Spielberg directed the hell out of West Side Story and everyone involved brings their A game.

Also as a costumer, it’s wonderful to see the pants on some of the background dancers. I adore the fabulous movement of the skirts with petticoat (which I’ve come to expect from this number) but the pedal pushers shown are so accurate to the time period and show even more progression. It just made me very happy.

Apparently from what I’ve heard, this scene was shot in like, SUPER hot weather. So bad, they had to cancel a shooting session. The blazing sun, added with super powerful lighting bearing down on the cast. Not to mention that Ariana I think had a sprained ankle, and STILL carried this role. Jesus Christ, what a cast!

Loved the little notes you included throughout your reaction. I never realized during the number Anita like playfully reminded Bernardo that he's more fair skinned than her after the "If you're all white in America" line. Its little things like that, that make me realize the little details of what Ariana DeBose meant when she asked Spielberg to have the film reflect that Anita is an Afro-Latina. Another is how in one scene she refers to herself using the word "prieta" Another line I recall in the film that does so in a similar way (although in a much sadder/more upsetting and a racist context) is that scene in Doc's shop where the Jets assault Anita and call her "Bernardo's black pig."

This song is very truthful. Trying to get a apartment was difficult. Doors were slammed in our face! But we ended up becoming home owners! We got the last laugh!

This came up again in my feed and a year later I’m still obsessed. And also Anita and Bernardo are the best couple, in a movie based on Romeo and Juliet. So I guess the nurse and tybalt are better for each other than Romeo and Juliet.

Notice how much skinnier the guys in the original were - each guy here looks about 15-20 lbs heavier ... the women are about the same size in both, I think. I do prefer the playfulness and male athleticism of the original - here, the males seem almost subdued, in comparison, whereas in the original, they were all machismo - but this is good, all the same. I'm just talking about this number; it's all I've seen of the new one.
