The Lockheed Model 188 Electra is an American turboprop airliner built by Lockheed. First flying in 1957, it was the first large turboprop airliner produced in the United States. Initial sales were good, but after two fatal crashes which prompted an expensive modification program to fix a design defect, no further orders were placed. The type was soon replaced by turbojet airliners, and many were modified as freighters and the type continues to operate in various roles into the 21st Century. The airframe was also used as the basis for the Lockheed P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft.
American Airlines was the launch customer, followed by Eastern Airlines and Braniff Airways.

I have the pleasure of watching the Electra's Naval sister, the Orion circle past my house frequently. It's always fun to watch history in flight.

Thanks for posting this! This was the first plane I ever flew on, a the age of 4, still faintly remember the flight, and how much I LOVED the sound of those Allison engines spooling up. a sound I love to this day.

Smells are most evocative. I distinctly remember the smell of kerosene fuel and the unique sound of the square-tipped props in front of the powerful Allison engines at Whenuapai airport when it was Auckland's International terminal. The TEAL Electra was leaving for Sydney, a flight that could take 4 - 5 hours depending on winds.

American would later introduce an improved version called the "Electra II." I like to call both versions the "Electra II" to distinguish them from the piston-powered L-10 Electra.

American Airlines called their Lockheed L-188 Electras, "Electra II," to indicate to the public that these airliners had gone through the Lockheed Electra Action Program or LEAP. This was an airframe modification program at Lockheed's expense in response to the Braniff Airlines (1959) and Northwest Orient Airlines Electra (1960) fatal crashes where the main wing separated from the aircraft in flight. All 170 Electras built went through the LEAP program. Another airline, Ansett-ANA would refer to their modified Electras as Electra MK ll.

This is the plane they called the Electra II, after Lockheed strengthened the engine nacelles and Lord Engine mounts, after two Electras, one Braniff on 9-29-1959, and one Northwest on 03-17-1960. The aircraft were not grounded but speed limited. Lockheed then discovered the problem was whirlmode, where a prop slightly out of balance literally tore the wing off of the aircraft. They were then modified in the LEAF Program, and then titled Electra II. In other words, after the pictured aircraft was modified, it carried Electra II titles. The renaming it the Electra II had nothing to do with the original L-10, L-12, or L-14 twin engine pre World War II Lockheed Electra.
