Athletes historically have been generally good on SNL over the years. It's because they're very secure in what they do for a living. So when it comes to something like performing, comedy and improv which is not necessarily in their wheelhouse, they defer to the people who are doing it on a regular basis. Plus everyone on staff wants them to succeed. Knowing that, they are open to letting go and trusting the cast and writers. The hosts who think they know better than the seasoned pros who do it weekly are the ones who tend to struggle and have a bunch of sketches that bomb. Often they can be actors who are used to their lane of acting and think they can kill it on the SNL stage as well. It's not for the feint of heart and not everyone can hack it.
