I remember watching this live, I loved how every other team in pit lane came out to congratulate him, it was truly a magical lap. To put it in perspective, from memory positions 2 to 10 were separated by 1.1 seconds, that's how even the cars are. And then Greg Murphy eclipses the fastest time by another 1.1 seconds. He was on another level that day.

1.1 seconds covering 9 cars is usually not impressive, so some context for those not familiar with Bathurst. A one lap qualifying run that *at worst* puts you in tenth place on the grid for the race (only the top ten cars do the one lap qualifying run) is not worth throwing a car into the wall for a race that starts in well under 24 hours and that is 1000km long.

Murphy's record lap stood until 2010. Beaten by Craig Lowndes, then again in 2017 by Scott McLaughlin. At the time Murphy's lap was incredible, remember watching it live on TV. 2003 the cars were still built from a factory built body
@borismcfinnigan3430
@borismcfinnigan3430 3 жыл бұрын
That isn't quite right. None of the cars in 2003 were from a factory built shell. Every car in the field in 2003 was a "project blueprint" car, the first year of project bluprint that had all cars on a controlled floorpan/suspension, neither car ran the wheelbase that they came from factory, if you look at a 2003 to 2012 supercar you can see, particularly in the falcon, how different the rear door is to a standard car. Incidentally Murphys car had a concession to allow them to run the proven and well developed 18 degree chev engine rather than the mandated and as yet underdeveloped "Holden motorsport" engine that came in that year.
@paulp1450

To answer your second question, the car itself was chassis HRT 043, meaning the 43rd car built by the works Holden Racing Team. It raced on for a few more years before being retired and sold to a private collector, who restored it to its 2003 spec (VY Commodore panels and Kmart livery, basically). It's been sold back and forth a couple of times but it's still in the hands of some enthusiast or another, and comes out to hit the track for special occasions. I don't know who exactly the current owner is, though, and a V8sleuth subscription is $440 (per year!), which is way beyond my wallet.

I was there on top of the Mountain the day Greg Murphy did his Lap of the Gods and I remember saying to my boys that that lap was something very special in the history of Mount Panorama but it was the way in which he did it. In a category where gaps are normally measured by hundredths and thousandths of a second he obliterated his opposition by more than a full second to the second placed car. I am a veteran of 45 visits to the 1000 and in all that time I have seen some very special moments but that lap ranks right up there with the very best of them. When Greg Murphy crossed the start/finish line that day he instantly wrote his name and the #51 K Mart Holden Commodore into Mount Panorama Bathurst folklore. A truly, Great Moment in Sport

So glad you did this, thanks heaps! Most KZfaqrs loose my interest when they ask you to like, comment and subscribe, but then ignore you when you do as they've asked. I mentioned this Greg Murphy Lap of the Gods a couple of videos ago and everyone wanted to see the NASCAR legend ride along and rightfully so, it's a great video. However, you managed to please all by doing both! Top job! My comments for this video are firstly, do you remember when Ambrose almost had a fight on the side of the track after his big crash (you say wreck)? That was with this New Zealand born Bathurst legend Greg Murphy, it was Ambrose versus Murphy. Murphy's lap of 2:06.8594 was groundbreaking and sorry (Google needed) I don't know exactly but I am sure it held for over ten years. Lap times are around 5+ seconds faster these days. I did put Murphy on pole position for the race which he won the next day (his 3rd Bathurst 1000 win). Greg also won the next year (his 4 and last win at Bathurst) You seemed interested in the car, I can tell you that not many know some of these details. The car has a chassis number, HRT 043 The car despite displaying number 51 was affectionately known as "Dancer 43" and already had great history as it was originally a Holden Racing Team (HRT) Commodore with Craig Lowndes as the pilot. It was an old series Commodore VT that was updated to become a VX Commodore in 2003 when it was over 3 to 5 years old. So Murphy did the Lap of the Gods (missed a gear remember) in an old car that was second hand while most had new cars. Then going on to win again not only the next day, but again the next year. HRT 043 became KRT 043 (KMart Racing Team) to some but I believe the chassis number was unchanged. Despite what everyone thinks that car was not the winning car displaying the same paint work the next day, for some reason they used its sister car HRT 044 for Greg Murphy and co-driver Rick Kelly to go on and win the race in. I can't find out much more without spending time Googling other than HRT 043 went back to Holden Racing Team as a spare car and was up for sale in 2006 but the sale fell through. It was reported to be restored to the "51 KMart" livery in 2018. Also restored to the same "51 KMart" livery was the 2003 & 2004 Bathurst winning car HRT 044 which was up for sale in 2019 for an undisclosed amount. Cars like these are extremely rare and priceless and often sold for over a million dollars. Despite this sometimes they're in retro races and driven as hard as ever. It's not impossible for retro or classic races to have a $15M dollar value for just the top 10 entrants. Add about 30% for USD. I enjoyed this and despite being a ford fan, I can still get goosebumps watching Murph (as we call him) in his Holden Commodore doing what I still call the best lap ever. Thanks for reading, comment if you did.

The recent faster times are on a completely resurfaced track. Much higher grip levels than 2003. So the current record has nothing to do with higher skills or a better lap.

Loving watching you do Bathurst videos!! Bathurst is my home town. I grew up there. I am living in Brisbane QLD now but get home sick all the time. When I was a teenager we would park on the side of the road up the top at skyline. We'd sit on Brock's wall and drink and look over the town. Best view. It was awesome. I loved going to the race. We would also park on the side of the highway after the race watching all the cars leaving town and waving. The good old days!

Having had the chance to interview Greg Murphy a few years ago, he'd like everyone to know that he didn't name it 'The Lap of the Gods'. I think he said something along the lines of 'I'm not egotistical enough to give it a name like that'. The record stood until 2010 beaten by Craig Lowndes in Practice 3 on the Friday before qualifying. The car from memory is at the National Motor Racing Museum which is right next to the track at Murray's Corner (last corner before going across the start/ finish line. And as someone else has pointed out in the comments search Jordan Cox Honda Civic if you want your mind blown on car control and overtakes on Mt Panorama.

I remember getting Greg Murphy to sign the passenger airbag in my Gen 3 powered Holden ute a year before this happened. He carried a gold pen with him all over NZ because it was such a common request at the time! Probably biggest name & most loved Kiwi driver since Denny Hulme + Bruce McLaren. That's pretty exalted company. Edit: Denny Hulme actually passed away driving at Bathurst. Went out doing what he wanted to do. Bruce McLaren died testing his car in the UK.

The thing to remember is that this was done in a road car that was upgraded to a race car whereas McLaughlin's breaking of the record was in a bespoke space frame racecar. And the kicker is he and his co-driver won the race as well, which has only happened 11 times in the 50+ year history of the race.

Remember this like it was yesterday, and the record is now 2:03.3783s held by Scott McLaughlin set in 2019 for the V8 Supercars sector, however the fastest lap for any car is Christopher Mies, he set a time of 1:59.2910, on the 16th November 2018, driving a GT3-spec Audi R8 Ultra.

The lap record was held for 7 years. It was eclipsed by Craig Lowndes in a practice session. The track was resurfaced and the record kept getting broken. Eventually in 2017 Scott McLachlan came along with the DJR PENSKE Racing Team and posted a 2 minutes 3seconds lap which although it was fast didn't get the same time standing as Greg's lap. Both are spectacular laps because Scott found the dirt on the top of the mountain and frightened the hell out of his Team. The 6.3 kilometre road circuit doesn't have it's altitude the steepness of it truely shown on the tv. It's Australia's most favourite race track.

Fun fact for you to take into consideration: Greg was on Talkback with Leighton Smith, of NewstalkZB, a NZ radio station, taking calls. I rang and asked about the "missed gear". Greg replied, when that happened, he had grabbed 1st, and the engine overrevved to 9200rpm ! Bear in mind, they are limited to 7500rpm, so, to overrev to that extent was frightening, also hence the tyre smoke seen, as she locked-up, before Greg was able to grab 3rd. Asked if there was any damage, Greg replied, they checked the valvetrain, then went out and won the next day - with the same engine! Truly an amazing (bulletproof!) car and driver combo.

I'm not a major sports fan. I mean I'm not not, I can usually just kind of take it or leave it but Bathurst... Bathurst is something special. Always has been. I grew up in Cowra, next town up the highway. Bathurst has a place in my heart but that's not what just earned my sub, Wrocker. You did. I enjoyed the commentary, your obvious level of knowledge and your willingness to travel outside your narrative and enjoy something from Australia as much as you obviously did. Cheers, dude.

One important thing to understand about this is it’s qualifying but it’s called a the Top 10 Shootout where the top 10 from initial qualifying get one lap only to determine the order of the first 5 rows. So it’s one shot to get right. The car is owned privately now. www.whichcar.com.au/news/motorsport/greg-murphys-lap-of-the-gods-v8-supercar-up-for-sale

The lap wasn't bettered until practice in 2010 by Craig Lowndes in a VE commodore. That Kmart car started out as a Holden Racing Team car in 2000 as a VT commodore raced by Craig Lowndes, it was updated in to VY spec in 2003 and raced by Todd Kelly (Murphys team mates brother) at HRT and sold mid year to Kmart racing for Murphy. 2003 was the last year the cars were allowed to run special qualifying engines, this explains the absolute crispness of the 5 litre chev in car #51 for qualifying. Murphy and Kelly dominated the race the following day to win the bathurst 1000 comfortably also. The car was sold numerous times and ended up in the development series I believe before being purchased by a collector and being restored In 2011 to its 2003 livery and remained with the owner until it was put up for auction in 2018 and expected to sell for close to 1 million aud. The most impressive Stat for this car at bathurst for me is that it was a 3 year old chassis and absolutely blitzed the newer cars that weekend. The current lap record is a 2.03.5592 set by Cameron Waters in the 2020 shootout in his Mustang.
