It's called the Lap of the Gods because he was over 1s faster than the second placed car. Murph's lap record has since been beaten a couple of times, but this lap, because of his total domination of the other drivers, will always be my Lap of the Gods.

Murph was one of the best V8 supercar drivers there was. He left nothing on the track. He was the first of our NZ brethren to lead to the likes of Scot Mclaughlin and Shane Van Gisbergen you will know from Indy Car and Nascar performances. Murph was a big inspiration to these guys in a Nationalist sense. We as Aussies will claim them because they are our bro's across the ditch but they are NZ icons.

The 1979 Hardie-Ferodo 1000 at Bathurst is legendary in the Australian racing community. Peter Brock raced his Holden Torana LX A9X hatchback, with Jim Richards as co-driver. They led the race from start to finish, won the race by six laps in front and on the final lap, Brocky set a new lap record for the race. I highly recommend checking it out, as it's absolutely legendary, and helps show the Bathurst race in its glory when they were still racing cars straight off the show room floor.

This was part of the Top 10 Shootout, which gives the top 10 qualifiers a single lap to improve on their time and sets the grid for the race the following day. Greg Murphy conceded that he actually muffed one corner and could have gone slightly faster! Don’t discount just how amazing it was that all the other teams lined pit lane to congratulate him.

Just an interesting FYI on the flames on over-run, its all very deliberate and surprising it cools the exhaust side of the engine... makes no sense at first, but its the cool fuel vaper passing the exhaust port, and headers etc. before it combusts.

@@RealFansSportsa similar thing happens with diesel engines that blow lots of black smoke. They are running a rich fuel mixture which provides a cooling effect. Diesel being less flammable just comes out as thick black smoke instead of as flames. It's not great for economy or the environment, but for pure performance that also has endurance it's what you need to do.

@@RealFansSports one way to think of it is like the old evaporative air coolers. The big boxes with a water tank, a loose weave cloth that wicks the water up and a fan that blows air through the water soaked cloth. As water evaporates, it consumes energy which reduces the temperature (that's why we sweat in the heat, so the sweat can be evaporated for its cooling effect).

It’s worth repeating, this is all on a public road that anyone can drive on when there are no races, that in places is little more than a lane and a half wide, with some of the steepest climbs and drops on a place that cars race anywhere in the world! Having driven the circuit it totally blows my mind every time I see racing on it what these drivers are able to do there, talented doesn’t do them justice.

Kiwis had success at Bathurst before Murph came on the scene and of those preceding him one of particular note was Jim Richards who won Bathurst seven times. Kiwis have seen success in world motorsport going way back including drivers like Bruce McLaren, Denny Hulme (1967 F1 champion), Chris Amon and so on, all of whom have inspired later generations just as Murph inspired SVG and Scott McLaughlin who after acheiving great success in Supercars have gone on to Nascar and Indycar respectively. There is also currently a very good prospect for F1 in Liam Lawson. Kiwis are in Formula E and many other forms of motorsport and not to forget Scott Dixon who has six Indycar Championships to his name. Dixon is one of many Kiwis who were assisted by Colin Giltrap a prominent Kiwi motor vehicle dealer and philanthropist who sadly passed away this week. I am sure I have missed many great names of Kiwi motorsport but as a proud Kiwi it is nice to see Murphs skill being discussed on your forum.

Murph's record stood for a while before it was broken but remember that was 20 years ago. This was the "Top Ten Shootout". After all the qualifying races the top ten cars race a one full speed solo lap to get their final grid positions for the main race. You never get those lap speeds in a race as there's too much traffic to get around.

At 2:03 in the vid, the guy with the beard shaking his head was John Bowe himself, in disbelief at the way Murphy was annihilating his time. Even more astounding - these cars were limited to 7500 rpm, BUT - in the Dipper, Murphy grabbed first gear instead of third, and over-revved to 9200rpm ! He clarified this on a radio chat-show a few weeks later. The crew checked the valvetrain overnight, and the car - and Murphy - went on the win the 1000Km (621 mile) race the next day.

Ahh the days when the V8 Supercar spat flames, before environmental concerns. Fun Fact, the V8 Supercar series came about because Bathurst used to be open class, the original Mini won in 1966, but all that changed come the 89 and 90 seasons, the Nissan Skyline R32 "Godzilla" - the 2.6 Litre V6 Monster from Japan absolutely owned the big lazy 5+ Litre V8s being put out by Ford and Holden ( GM's Aussie arm ) at the time, so then it became about the V8 Supercars as far as coverage and money and everyone else still raced in an open series anyway.

no mate, it's nothing like nascar, there is no one in his ear telling him to do anything around that track, it is ALL him, he knows that track better than anyone in his pits, he is in full control and his team actually trusts him to bring the car back to the garage in one piece. The last thing he needs is someone in his ear distracting him while he is driving at eleven tenths. And yes, those flames are unburnt fuel escaping out the exhaust pipe when he lifts off the throttle, pretty spectacular at the end of the day when it is getting darker near the end of the race :-)

With this race, pole position doesn't really mean much except for the prestige of saying you're in position 1, only 4 or 5 pole position starters have won the race, 1000km equates to 161 laps with 2 drivers per car. It's an extremely taxing race, on the cars and drivers.

Like some others have said, they don't really run spotters like they do in NASCAR, if you watch the races the pit only tends to talk to them on the easy part of the circuit. In qualifying they generally let the drivers do their jobs with no interruptions, specially at this track.. As for Murphy, even prior to this lap he was a well know driver.

Yeah so Murph was my childhood hero and he had nothing to prove, he was already one of the stars of the category and just an insanely skilled operator around Mount Panorama. The guy was an absolute class driver who always find a way through and usually without pinning anyone (well, unless the other guy was Russell Ingall). On the zoom in to his wheel as he is climbing the mountain around 3:52, you can see his reference time. That is a 'theoretical' lap time the team would have programmed in to tell him if he is up or down, that time is usually sort of the best guess on how fast the fastest bloke on the track could go with some addition/subtraction based on the performance expectations of his car. The cars do bottom out alot but the flames are the exhaust. V8 supercars run super rich and at the time used super high octane fuels.

I find the Americans reaction to Bathurst rather funny, let's face it, it's the greatest endurance race held over the most taxing course in the world, we as Aussies just accept it as our right to chill out with bbqs and booze over the weekend 😂🎉❤

Hi guys. I see yr watching Australia's version of the Daytona 500. You have done Greg Murphy's 2003 LOTG video which by yr reactions u all enjoyed. May l suggest a one lap screamer which l know you will enjoy. As l'm a massive fan of Peter Brock, it is the lap of Bathurst. It is the 1991 Toohey's Top 10 shootout. Brock was running in a Holden Commodore VN with a 600bhp 5.0 Holden V8. You guys have to have a reaction video on this lap of Brock at Bathurst. Will not disappoint. Make it happen. Btw Peter Geoffery Brock was the Australia's Dale Earnhart Jnr.

You seem to really like Australian motorsports. Are you aware that an Australian , Jack Brabham won the 1966 F1 Drivers Championship and the Constructors championship (back then it was called the International Cup Championship) in a car he designed, built and raced. He is, to date, the only person to do this). In total he won the 1959, '60 and '66 F1 Drivers Championship

We do things differently down under. It’s not nascar where you drive in an oval. Originally Bathurst was a stock standard car race to show the public what each brand could do and the track was meant to represent each type of road types you’d expect. Like steep descents/climbs, hard corners, numerous curves/switchbacks, off camber corners, occasional kangaroos jumping on track whilst racing. Now it’s been turned into a formal racing event. Unfortunately the Oz car industry has closed down so now we race US/European cars. It’s not the same.

This kind of driving is why Shane vangesbergin won his one and only Nascar race throwing the car from corner to corner just like Murphy did. I'd be willing to bet that there's probably 4 or 5 v8 supercar drivers that could have done what vangisbergin did when you watch how they drive and the tracks they drive on. Also I love how the best recent lap record's of Bathurst are by kiwis.

Gday mate, appreciate and love watching these types of videos. i wanted to run over a couple things so you understand bathurst, firstly it was all flames no sparks, bathurst goes for 4 days Thursday to sunday with the 1000km race held on sunday, the days leading upto it the v8s have a number of practices, they hold qualifying on the saturday, the top 10 drivers then have what you see here the top 10 shootout, the 10th qulaifier goes first down to the no1 qualifier, where each driver ends is how he starts the race in said posotion, as for having someone talking in their ear, yes they do but not for this, its not the same as nascar where you have a spotter giving you tips, v8 supercar drivers run purely of memory, walking the track, and BY SIMPLY GRABBING THEIR BALL SACK & THROWING THEM OVER THER SHOULDER....

Scott McLaughlin, who is now racing in the U.S in Indy Car. Has gone faster around Bathurst and beaten Greg Murphy's lap of the gods time. You can see why Darryl Waltrip shit himself in a Bathurst hot lap There is no spotters in motor racing in Australia.

What you were seeing was exhaust flames from unused fuel, which is caused by running a very rich air/fuel mix.

Until you drive up to the top and come back down, you cannot appreciate how steep and how high up they are from the start line. When we drove down, it’s so steep that you can see the road - and they do it so much faster !

Regarding spotters, they're not common in Aus circuit racing, speedway and rally I think more so. The team can communicate via radio from the pits, but in qualifying laps the team typically stays silent to let the driver focus on the lap. Especially at Bathurst, you try to only speak to the driver on the straights. Murph would have had what's called a reference lap time loaded in the dash, which would show delta to the reference, he'd have known he was going quick based on that.
