you didn't miss anything, you just started from the beginning, essentially JP became more metal with progression and hit their peak in early 80's with full leather and metal look and sound leading the way from England. They are still around today. The 83' US Festival concert has great footage of them live.

Go to the other extreme with a song most people start with and then think JP is heavier than they actually are. PAIN KILLER. And then listen to more and realize they are somewhere in between. GREAT BAND

Painkiller is good, but there are much better songs from priest... like Jawbreaker, Night Crawler, Victim of Changes, Beyond the Realm of Death, Traitors Gate, Nostradamus, Sentinel, The rage, Hellrider... etc.

@@siegmundfuchsbrugger1365 There are lots of good songs. I didn't say Painkiller was best, but is more of a demonstration of how heavy they can be. I would argue no other song of theirs has the intensity of Painkiller. Just showing extremes.

This was early Judas Priest in 1975... they were promoting their 1st album 'Rocka rolla'... and this performance was a preview of what became their 2nd album 'Sad wings of destiny' (released in 1976) ... The image and sound of Judas Priest started w/ the 70's hippie style rock n' roll, but the band already had a heavy edge - they came from Birmingham, England where Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant and John Bonham came from... They would become a full-on heavy metal band by 1978 and defined the image of metal bands by wearing leather-and-studs outfits onstage... Rob Halford (vocals) would also ride a Harley motorbike onstage at Judas Priest concerts. Originally, Judas Priest was formed in 1969 by vocalist Al Atkins and later featured K.K. Downing (guitar) - the guy wearing the white hat... and Ian Hill (bass)... (the name came from a song by Bob Dylan) Atkins quit the band in 1973 and Rob Halford (vocals) joined and brought his powerful, high vocal range to the band... In 1974, the band asked Glenn Tipton (guitar) to join Priest... he was older and became the band leader - Tipton and Downing created the twin lead guitar attack that defined the heavy metal genre and inspired countless bands like Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax. As Judas Priest got louder and more aggressive... the band developed sonically and visually and finally broke big in 1980 when their 6th album 'British steel' went gold... scoring hit singles like 'Breaking the law'... 'Living after midnight'...🔥🔥🤘🤘 Priest's 8th album 'Screaming for vengeance' in 1982 sold platinum and they were the biggest heavy metal band in the world at that point for a bit... Judas Priest went through a few drummers in their career - this was (the late) John Hinch in the clip who played on their 1st album only... Les Binks played drums from 1977 to 1979... (the late) Dave Holland played drums from 1980 to 1989... and Scott Travis is their current drummer who joined in 1990. Unfortunately, founding guitarist K.K. Downing left the band in 2010 and was replaced by guitarist Richie Faulkner... Guitarist Glenn Tipton was diagnosed w/ Parkinson's disease and had to be replaced on tour by guitarist/ producer Andy Sneap. Rob Halford left Judas Priest in 1992 to work on other bands... he was replaced by vocalist Tim 'Ripper' Owens in 1997 and Priest recorded 2 albums w/ Owens before they reunited w/ Halford in 2004... Owens recently joined K.K. Downing's new band K.K.'s Priest in 2019 and have 2 albums out already.

They just played a massive, 100,000 people metal festival in California on October 5, 2023 with Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Guns N Roses, Metallica . . . I would recommend Judas Priest, Victim of Changes from the Unleased in the East album. Peace.

This is the '70 Judas Priest.. They were formed in 1969 in Birmingham, UK, like Black Sabbath. They're started as a lighter blues/heavy rock outfit, with songs like Rock Rolla. This song is on Sad Wings of Destiny, which is their second album , and 1st of the legendary ones. That bald + leather -thing was on Painkiller in 1991, and that album is the epitome and dictionary example of Heavy Metal - all killers, no fillers.

This was 1975, and they were still figuring out who they would be. The album this came from, wasn't released till 1976. In 1978, they started the leather look, and the total metal sound. Even this album, has a lot of metal on it. Ripper and Tyrant are definitely metal, from this same album. Next song you should do, is " victim of changes" from this album, or " painkiller", for their 90s sound. They have a brand new song called " panic attack" that sounds awesome. The new album isn't out till March, but the song is on youtube

After British Steel the Metal became more defined by the Two bands that played at the hip together back to back, maiden used to be first but as the decades went on was priest who thrown down the gauntlet and defined True Heavy Metal but then recently both Maiden and Priest have their own venue with guest bands. Rob has some movie themed songs to. I licked British Steel steel so much on my workout list that I became a beast were people didn't believe I could go so far in a short period of time. Defenders of the faith took Priest into it's own genre. Heavy Metal.

IMHO the best interpretation of this song is provided by Lyric Interpretations: "This song is about the realization that the hippy dream and lifestyle of the 1970s was a lie based around drug and alcohol consumption and "Free love". The first part is "Dreamer" it is describing the naive assumption of the hippy's that these things were changing lives in a positive way, that flower power ideal made a difference to the world. The second part "Deceiver" is a turning point in the song, it gets a lot angrier and is about waking up to the fact that although these things felt good at the time, they were deceiving themselves into thinking they were changing anything in the world. There's mention of nuclear bombs and references to war nearing the end of the song, this is Judas Priest saying, just because we forgot about the evils in the world, lost in a drug, drink and free love haze and the hippy ideal, the problems of the world had not disappeared, we had just forgotten about them and deceived ourselves into thinking we were really making any difference at all."

Rob Tipton KK Hill and Inen were young pups here. But they paved the way and became the psychedelic Rock of the 70's to Heavy Metal cutting edge stuff. British steel broke the music world it was considered underground back then as we know their fans like Metalica came right up behind them. We were Jocks, nerds, Geeks, Dweebs but music brang us all together. They era we hung out, some tried pot and shrooms acid LSD or the better was masculine were we all tripped out to Maiden Priest Sabbath Deep Purple Zeppelin. Later more speedy Metalica Cliff had bell bottom Jeans cocaine Master of puppets Rush Van Halen all coked up.

You can certainly hear where heavy metal came from on the second song played, Deceiver. Those fast chugging riffs and screaming vocals were not common in rock music yet. Led Zeppelin did that with the Immigrant Song, but Priest took that - developed it, modernized it, and more or less built a genre out of it.
