You have a deep rabbit hole here: The Cure, Depeche Mode, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Smiths, Siouxie and the Banshee’s, The Church. So much of the music of the mid to late 80’s. Pop melodies, dark lyrics, unlike anything that came before it.

The Cure are one of those bands you've heard a thousand times and never known until you hit those songs because..... movies, tv, adverts, games, at the grocery overhead, restaurants..... 40+ years of work across genres and Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. You've heard the lead singer's voice a Lot probably. They've had multiple major hits. And dead on - this was from their first, (primarily) post-punk genre album. I fell in love with The Cure before I knew who they were, just heard some of their hits in my early teens and later found out their name and started diving into albums alone and with friends. 30 years later and just did my 4th concert last year (in which, not for the first time I saw them, they played for about 3hrs). Oh, and they've some SOLID "put the songs on when you wanna wallow in sadness and self-pity over something for a while" songs lol. If I need a good bit of catharsis every few years I'll get miserable and put on the Disintegration album. Between the mix of how sad and how beautiful different songs are... quality let your hair down and let it out music lol. They also a huge amount of upbeat and fun and funky and this and that. Like said, 40+ years across genres. I've only just found your channel and am jumping around to different reactions you've done and am really enjoying them! Let me tell you, your reaction to Tool's The Pot was a breath of fresh air compared to the, let's phrase it "not as thoughtful", more common takes one sees. Would love to see you do more The Cure. A not-so-listened to one that I'd suggest: Jupiter Crash (no spoilers to the song but a helpful reference if you don't remember back to then: the name comes in connection to comet Levy hitting Jupiter around when it was written) Some things you may end up recognizing: Just Like Heaven, Lovesong, Fascination Street, Lovecats, Friday I'm in Love. Among personal favorites: Disintegration, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, A Forest, Letter to Elise (also rarely checked out by folks... overlooked imo), Let's Go to Bed Okay, that was a novel. Apologies for verbosity but, yeah, one of my fave bands. Another mentioned Depeche Mode - have to go look to see if you've reacted to them. If not, another 40+ year band that is so worth the dive and varies genres while staying themselves.

This was their first big hit, off of their 1979 debut album "Three Imaginary Boys"... During this time, they were very much inspired by punk, especially by a band called "The Buzzcocks". By the time their 2nd album "Seventeen Seconds" came around just a year later in 1980, they had gone for a totally different, Goth Rock sound that they are known and loved for... They are often regarded as "The Grandfathers" of the Goth Rock genre. A song that was featured on that 2nd album called "A Forest" became a staple of the genre. They experimented with a more Synth focused, "New wave" sound later on in their career and they did wonders with that too. Great band all round, still active today, 45 years later and they still sound great!

British band The Cure always was reinventing itself and its sound - pretty sure frontman & leader Robert Smith is the only band member who has remained a constant. I think when their first album came out in ‘79, they were a trio. The debut album had one version released in the UK & another in the US, with different titles, album covers & slightly different song selections (seems like “Boys Don’t Cry was only on the US version? All the other songs on the debut albums are edgier & darker). At times they’ve been a 4-piece, and a 5-piece. Their sophomore album was very ambient, somber & moody and the next two downright dark - so that trilogy of albums left many with the mistaken impression they are a goth band. But by the early to mid-‘80s they were making some seriously giddy synth pop - Smith said his writing reflects the ups & downs of his life. By around 1989 or ‘90, they released what many consider their masterpiece album, “Disintegration,” which is back to being a bit on the dark side. I consider them Alternative Rock, but when they first emerged on the scene they were consider Post-Punk/New Wave. I think Smith resisted trying to be a mainstream, commercial, hit-making band, yet they still had big hits; so they kind of straddle the underground/cult label with the mainstream category and are still very much an international band as far as their audiences go. As far as I can tell, they’ve never stopped playing big arenas and stadiums, so they’re not one of those bands that has moved from the big time to playing medium-sized cities (which means I may never get to see them live). Robert Smith’s is the voice you hear on their songs. To appreciate his song-writing genius, listen to his sparse, angst-ridden “10:15 Saturday Night” and realize a teenager wrote this (he was 19 when it came out on the debut albums, plus they had recorded it a year earlier for the BBC Peel Sessions, which you can find on CD). Smith is not only a great songwriter and vocalist but an underrated guitar player. The Cure was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. After 4 decades or so, their catalog is pretty massive, you might start with their one (that I know of) greatest hits album, 2 “best of” CDs that don’t have”best of” in their titles, or stream their Billboard hit singles to get a feel for them. They don’t have just one sound. Their darker songs don’t depress me - they validate how I feel (the rare, deep album cut “The Upstairs Room” is an example). The also have a lot of upbeat songs - their pop masterpiece “The Lovecats” for instance” - and some of the most magical romantic songs: “Lovesong,” “A Night Like This” and “Just Like Heaven” to name a few. It’s a toss up whether The Cure is my favorite band or The Doors. Both bands’ frontmen are genius lyricists/songwriters because their words are so poetic and meaningful and their melodies so emotional. Both were counterculture rebels (but a decade or so apart, & from different countries). Morrison and Smith were both charismatic & hot, though Smith is more reserved. Both bands were full of extremely talented musicians. I guess those are some of the common denominators of why these 2 bands are my favorites. Addendum: The Cure did a great cover of The Doors’ “Hello, I Love You.”

Love that you reacted to The Cure! Four decades of awesomeness, plenty to choose from if you decide to go down this rabbit hole, which I hope you do. Robert Smith's voice, lead vocals of The Cure, is pretty distinct, you may of heard it in passing in movies or tv shows...the first movie that comes to mind is, "The Crow" featuring the late Brandon Lee, they did a song called "Burn" for the soundtrack. The Cure was a staple growing up in the 80's, we called it "Goth" or "New Wave". Some other fantastic bands from that genre: The Smiths, Duran Duran, Blondie, Joy Division, New Order, Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, and Echo & the Bunnymen. Enjoyed the reaction BP!! Thank you!

Great choice, ❤ Black Pegasus ❤, ask me stuff, I know a thing or three by The Cure. People remember Fridays I'm in Love by The Cure. The iconic 1980s song is A Forest. The Cure meant to cure the music industry, so each song should be a work of art. Each lyric is a poem with a history and a meaning. Their capability for orchestration grew through the decades, but has been called perfect every so often. No sound of a song is much like another, except in their album progression of the 18 song Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me album (1987) where they made of a point of handing over from one song to the next. The song you are listening to is one of their very early successes. They are still alive and touring. 13 albums in the time from 1979 through 2008. You will love the song "Lullaby". Not getting the girl? See "A Forest". Or with the strangest twist, off the children's novel of the same name: "Charlotte Sometimes".

My first exposure was the album 'Faith' (1981), it's very melancholy verging on dark and I loved it! This version is a re-recording of one of their first singles released to promote their first singles collection. Here in the UK they are a national treasure. Yes, they have had a couple if US hits but if any band can be described as the worlds biggest cult band, its a coin toss between The Cure and Depeche Mode. Not all their songs are like this, they started pop-punk/post punk but there is psychedelic influences creeping in along the way, they helped invent 'goth' along the way, they like to bring things in and mess around with them. Yet always they sound like The Cure. Wrap your ears around their 2 singles collections "Standing on a Beach: The Singles" and "Galore: The Singles 1987-1997". to get a good taste of what they are about.

Another band that was in the same vein is The Smiths. I recommend the song "There is a Light that never goes out." There is no official video, but there many videos that play the studio version. Looking forward to your reaction.

AAAHHHH my favourite band. I’m almost 45 and discovered them at 16. Seen them live a few times now, the latest was just the end of last year. Bob’s voice is still as rich sounding. An unbelievable catalogue of work to get through. So happy you’ve discovered them. They have a few different sounding albums just because, like any band with their length of time in the music business, they’ve gone through some changes. These guys have been going from the late 70’s so they’ve been going for a while. A band born out of the UK post-punk, early New Romantics, Goth scenes (although they always say they aren’t goth but they so are lol. Us goths love them!)
