Hey mate, just remember this is Rugby League. The Australian Competition is called the NRL (National Rugby League). There are 2 types of Rugby & they are quite different, the other style is called Rugby Union & is what you'll usually see in the US & what Jona Lomu was playing. Rugby Union is a lot more confusing rule wise so is harder to learn about. What you're watching here is Rugby league, it is way simpler but allows for a far faster game and more spectacular Tries, passes & tackles. Make sure it's Rugby League you're watching & I guarantee you'll pick up the rules after a Game or two!

Greg Inglis is a complete package for a rugby league player.. he’s big , fast, strong , shifty and can kick as well.. he can also play pretty much every position and still carve up. He was even chased by nfl clubs but he declined and stayed in rugby league .. he was also a pro swimmer. He’s just complete.

The thing with G.I is, he is 6'5, could catch absolute bombs(kicks), he was obvious fast, he could jump incredibly high, he often required 3 to 4 people to tackle, he could kick quite well, he was exceptional defensively and he was a good play maker. He was arguably the most complete player to ever play the game. And as a new zealander who supports the warriors I hated every second of it but also appreciated how amazing he truly was. Hope all the best to him!

When he wore the Red & Green jumper he was playing for South Sydney Rabbitohs and retired. The Maroon jumper is Queensland Vs NSW State of Origin. The Green & gold jumper is when he played for Australia. The purple was for Melbourne Storm. Such an inspiration to so many young players even today. This is NOT Rugby. League and rugby are 2 different sport. What you watching is called Rugby league where they get tackled and play the ball through their legs. Rugby union is when the player get tackled, players lays on the ground and a ruck is formed where multiple players are on top of the ball trying to fight foe the ball. Lomu played union with the all blacks. Inglis played league in Australia

The next guy currently carving his own legacy in Rugby League is a talent by the name of Latrel Mitchell. Like Inglis, Mitchell is an absolute terror for any & all defenders. Breaking games wide open with a single step(juke), pass, fend, intercept, tackle or a hit. He pulls no punches in defense either, when he hits someone, they typically stay hit, just like Inglis. The only difference is that Mitchell loves to rough-house with malice. He'll make his return to games this week after an injury break. He's Aboriginal like Inglis, tall, strong, quick off the mark & in pace, agressive & highly skillfull. His stats for line breaks would be at a high average, because each time he touches the ball it takes 2-3 defenders to subdue him because he breaks out of tackles with ease. The differrence between Rugby(Union) and Rugby League, is that in Union (Jonah Lomu) - each team has unlimited chances to score a try(Points). Union scoring system is 5pts for a try, and 2 pts for a conversion of a try. In League(Greg Inglis) each team has 6 chances(set of 6) to score a try(Points). Failure to score points at the end of each set, typically results in turning the ball over to the opposition for their chance to score within their set of 6. To avoid turning the ball over at the end of each set. A team could put in a strategic field position kick into opposition territory which allows for advantage in defending in enemy territory. It also allows for continuous flow of the game, without stoppage. Being caught in a tackle at the end of your teams set of 6 is frowned upon. The advantage in field position and attack is sooo great it often results in tries being score against you. Which is why its sooo heavily frowned upon. I guess it's the equivalent of a 'Double Dribble' in basketball. Like Really? Lastly.. there is more pressure in rugby league for an individual to perform both in attack, & more importantly in defense. It is the equivalent to baskeballs 'Man-to-Man' defensive strategy. Counting off is crucial - which is measuring what number defender you are, in refernce to the attacker standing opposite you. If they are 3rd attacker in from the sideline, then you need to be 3rd defender in from the sideline, and make sure you take your attacker if they get the ball. Missed tackles automatically turn into line breaks & try-scoring chances. Not the outcome your team wants. So to recap.. Rugby Union: Unlimited opportunity to score points and a conversion. 5 pts for a try, 2 pts for a conversion. Rugby League: 6 Opportunities to score points & conversion, before turnover. 4pts for a try, 2 pts for a conversion.

Hi cv tekky baby. Love your coverage. just fyi "footy" doesn't belong to aussie rules. Footy is just our word for 'football'. aussie rules no more owns that word than soccer own the word football. aussie rules followers are not going to correct you because to them footy is aussie rules. but in our culture it would be correct for you to refer to gridiron as footy, because that is what your people go and watch week in week out. I mention this only because you are going to get confused when you start hearing the rugby league commentators start refering to "the footy" if I don't say something. We all appreciate Americans loving our sport but please Please PLEASE my friend - understand that there are two rugbys. The NRL rugby LEAGUE is what Greg played. LEAGUE commenced in 1895 breaking away from rugby in England. In Australia it stated in 1908. 13 per side. Much more open than rugby and as a result, much more gruelling. Aerobically, the defense has to retire 10 meters from each completed tackle (or down). The offense gets 6 downs to score a touchdown (or try) and usually, tactically, they'll kick on the fifth down if they are unlikely to score. They can't move up for the next tackle until the attacking team puts the ball in play at the 'play the ball'. A bit like a line of scrimmage in NFL. The tackled player regains his feet and rolls the ball behind him and the player behind him is called the "dummy half" who decides the direction the next play will take. Try doing that at the speed they do and remember - each player stays on the field (barring injury) and does defense AND offense. Nobody runs interference - you make your own breaks. The NRL currently has 17 teams nationally including one pro team representing New Zealand. Greg's stats mean; Tests = matches for Australia v other countries. Origins: = NSW v Qld in an annual 3 match tournament. These games are phenomenal and been happening since 1980. Origin referring to where each player first played their original football. Club games: = pro weekly seasonal matches including play offs. Greg played for the Melbourne Storm and then South Sydney Rabbitohs. TRIVIA: "rabbitoh' was a phrase coined during the great depression. South Sydney was a working class suburb and there were street vendors who would walk the neighbourhoods selling butchered rabbits - kind of like an ice cream van but they used a cart. They would call out "Rabbitoh!" referring to themselves so the residents would come out onto the street to buy the rabbits. Thanks for the video!
