I am of mixed ancestry and my mother's family are mostly Welsh. I have felt a connection to my Welsh blood all my life and although I have never lived in Wales, my Gran did and my parents retired there. Moving around England all my life, Talgarth and Bronllys were the closest thing I had to a home. Some years ago, my mother, sister and I attended a concert by a male voice choir on St David's Day in Didcot, Oxfordshire. Lots of old Welsh songs were sung and when they got to the national anthem, they invited the audience to sing it in English or in Welsh. I knew it in Welsh and as we started to sing, the hall filled with proud Welsh folk, singing loudly in their own language. It was incredible.

The Welsh National Anthem was created by a father who was a poet and his son who was a composer, and it was created in 1856 to be performed at an Eisteddfod. An Eisteddfod is a huge festival/competition in Wales that typically happens every year, and it goes to a different town or city each year. It's a competition of Welsh culture such as poets, musicians, dancers, writers, artists, etc. The Eisteddfod started in 1176 by a Lord Rhys in his castle in Cardigan, inviting poets and musicians all across Wales to perform and be awarded in their own categories with a chair at the Lords table, although it gained huge popularity in the 19th century, and become an official National competition across Wales in 1880, and since then there has been an Eisteddfod in Wales every year except for 1914, 1940 & 2020. There are also Eisteddfod's held twice a year in Patagonia, Argentina as there was a huge migration of Welsh people who moved there in the late 1800's due to the belief that the Welsh language and culture was being threatened in Wales due to the English. Although the Eisteddfod's in Patagonia are influenced by the many different cultures and languages that are used daily in Patagonia and Argentina such as Welsh, English & Spanish.

Before even seeing the video, the Welsh anthem, Land of My Fathers/Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau is easily the best song, and I say that as an Englishman with 1/4 Scots 1/8 Irish ancestry and no Welsh blood that I know of. Great that you played a gutsy version of God Save The Queen with two verses sung. One of the problems with the national anthem is it's often played too slow, one verse and mumbled, when it should be sung with gusto. That said, it is the Queen's preference that only one verse is sung in her presence, after all, she has to hear a lot more than the rest of us. :-)

Thats not the Irish anthem. I don't blame you for that, its very difficult to find the real anthem on youtube for some reason. That's an English language cover version, the real anthem is in Irish called 'Ámhrán na bhFiann'. The only way I've ever found this online is if you look it up live at a football match or something, otherwise it gives it in English or the wrong instrumentation.

The Welsh national anthem was the first anthem to be sung at a sporting event. It was sung in response to the All Black's Haka in 1905. Also the Welsh anthem was the first thing to ever be recorded in the Welsh language. Also God Save the Queen must be sung at any event where the Queen is present. Can you imagine how tired she must be of that song after hearing it her entire life. Even before she was Queen she had to hear it all the time as God Save the King when she went places with her father.

The Irish national anthem was originally written in 1910 in English. It was later translated in 1923 by Liam Ó Rinn after the victory of the war of independence. It is called "Amhrán na bhFiann". Only the chorus is sung at official events. Out of respect, we stand with our hands behind our backs either singing or in silence. Today it is sung as Gaeilge (in Irish) NEVER in English.

Of course the anthem is always played at the close down of Radio 4 every morning at about 1am (?) when they start broadcasting the World Service. I'm only 29 but I'm sure I remember seeing the national anthem played on TV at the end of the evening when I've stayed up late enough (albeit might have been the Irish national anthem on Irish television). At the local Irish Club (in the UK) the Irish national anthem was always played at the end of the night, and I've been in hotels in Ireland where it will be the last song after a night of live music (even in the nightclub of a hotel it was the last song played, although this might be more of a rural thing?).

There was a verse about General Wade crushing the Scots, but it doesn't seem to have survived much past the song's initial popularity during and right after the 1745 rebellion. It was just a popular patriot song until the 1770s/80s when it taken up as a quasi-official national anthem, as such it's pretty much always been three verses.. The 2nd verse is now almost never sung, the 3rd is rarely sung and the most usual rendition now is just the 1st verse.

The Welsh actually invented the concept of singing national anthems at the start of sporting events in 1905. The visiting New Zealand All Blacks rugby team, made up of all Maori NZ natives who had been introduced to the sport were touring the home nations of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. However at the start of each match they performed the previously unheard of Haka wardance (still done today). This helped contribute to an aura of invincibility about them (they were already pretty amazing). The 1st 3 matches against England, Scotland and Ireland they won deciesively. Observing this the Welsh team organised to respond to the haka by having all 40,000 welsh fans in the stadium sing their anthem defiantly. They went on to beat the All Blacks and anthems at sport became a new thing!

The Welsh national anthem is lovely and I'm English. Also, we only ever really sing the first verse of the English one. Wales is pronounced the same as the large sea mammal rather than "Wells" as Americans seem to say it.

Neither Scotland nor England have an official anthem, something that definitely needs fixing. Too often "God Save the Queen" is used as an English anthem, which then causes confusion when it's really the British National Anthem, as it's the Queen's Anthem in reality. Most people in Wales cannot speak Welsh but all learn the national anthem in school. As others have said, that's some weird version of the Flowers of Scotland. You really need to hear all of these anthems in a rugby crowd setting. In fact, if you want to do a second video with "Anthems of Rugby", you'll get excellent renditions by the tens of thousands of members of the crowds. As for respect for anthems, we don't do the anthem-worship that Americans do, but thanks for your consideration.

@@SaorAlba1970 sadly, you're wrong. It's just some sports that use it. Scotland is not leaving anytime soon, "this year" is a delusion. Sometime in the 2020s? Sure.

All school children in Wales learn Welsh and most have Welsh as the language of general education. English speaking elderly people are now dying of old age and are being replaced by bilingual Welsh speakers. The old language is growing and is beautiful. Dw i'n siarad Cymraeg.

I’m astonished so many of my fellow Irishmen thought that was a cover version 😂 totally agree it shouldn’t never be sang like that again, Gaelic version just sounds so much better, but that is how it was for quite a few years until someone translated it to what we are accustomed to today.
