In Germany, the vast majority speaks english. And if not, the bavarians are nice, esp. in these traditional restaurants - if needed, we will speak "with hands and feet" (myself German, living in Munich and a chef).

Sauerkraut is so typically German that they called us "Krauts". It is super healthy, low in calories but lots of minerals and especially Vitamin C. Pretty much the only source of Vitamin C in medieval German winters.

A fresh schnitzel means: the meat is not frozen, it is sliced, it is seasoned after ordering, it is breaded and cooked in a pan with unprocessed butter (or often clarified butter) just before serving. Meat, salt, pepper, flour, egg, breading, butter. That's it. No artificial additives. I would say this is standard procedure for a “good schnitzel” in Germany/Austria. Of course there are also pre-baked ones, but you can taste the difference.
@jensbaranek8322
@jensbaranek8322 8 ай бұрын
You may notice, that the pannade of the schnitzels is lose: This is a sign for best quality, as the schnitzels must have been made just in time (à la minute) to be like that. An original schnitzel has to be made of veal, so porc, chicken or turkey are the "cheap version" of a schnitzel - but still great!
@jensbaranek8322
@jensbaranek8322 8 ай бұрын
The suitable side dishes for schnitzels are: Potatoes (boiled, panned with butter and parsley - very traditional), potatoe salad (south: with vinaigrette, north: with mayonnaise) or french fries. IMHO, potatoe salad is the best choice, esp. in summer in a beergarden. And a green salad or cucumber salad (with dill).

@@jensbaranek8322 There are no Schnitzel form beef or lamb? An internet search says something different. Can you give a source of your knowledge that says there are no other schnitzels? Different internet sources say there are schnitzel from the 13th century others later, some say from the 16th century. You say "Wiener Schnitzel" is the original, but it was invented in the 19th century. So other schnitzel clearly were made centuries earlier. I guess you are focussed on "Wiener Schnitzel" but missed to write so.

An original Munich Schnitzel has to be veal (not pork!) coated with a mix of sweet mustard and horse radish under the finish of breadcrumbs from pretzels. Andechser is actually a beer brand by the Benedectine monastic brewery in Andechs (upper Bavaria); their most famous beer is the dark Doppelbock (a Bock beer is a strong beer, the Doppelbock has more than 7% alcohol). And in any Munich restaurant you'll have personnel speaking English very well, which will translate the menu to you (like she did at least try here, but "Leberkaes" is really hard to translate - it is the thing in 11:17). Traditional Bavarian food is made for hard working people, therefore much carb and much protein. Currywurst (curry sausage) was invented in Berlin after WW II by a street stand operator using ketchup (maybe also Worcester sauce) and curry powder she had obtained from British soldiers.
@SandySandifer

It is the original Vienna schnitzel that must be veal. The original Munich schnitzel is usually pork coated with sweet mustard and horseradish before it is breaded as all schnitzels are - it is good. The schnitzel originates from Vienna, Austria. Guten Appetit !! Greetings from a polyglot U.S. American born in Vienna and residing in Munich for a few decades.

It depends on which state you are visiting. Bavaria has a completely different cuisine than Schleswig-Holstein. What you should definitely try in Germany is the currywurst and the Döner kebab. Another thing you should definitely try is the Black Forest Cherry gateau. There is a video series called Cooking the world and it's mainly about German cuisine. I'll give you the link there so you can look around at your leisure. www.youtube.com/@cooking-the-world Just as a little information, there are 1,520 different types of sausage in Germany. The Federal Republic is world-famous for its types of sausage and ham: Thuringian bratwurst, bockwurst, currywurst, liverwurst, white sausage, meat sausage - nowhere is the variety greater than here. You don't have to learn German. German is often not easy for native speakers. So why learn our language which is not easy to learn. What you should be able to do is say "Guten Tag"or "Auf Wiedersehen"or "Danke" and "Bitte". Most Germans speak English, especially in larger cities.😊😉 Furthermore, most of your types of beer were founded by Germans, but as far as I know, you don't have the German Purity Law for beer. Therefore your beer is adulterated - we would call it "Pisswasser"😅😅. Real good German beer is brewed according to the purity law and anyone who drinks it will immediately notice the difference. By the way, in northern Germany we like our beer a little more bitter than southern Germans. By the way, the currywurst was invented by Herta Heuwer from West Berlin after the Second World War. Unfortunately there is no uniform price for fries with currywurst. But you should expect 5-10 euros.😊

I come from northern Germany, where Hamburg is as well. Honestly, I've never seen someone who eat this, or even visited a restaurant in my entire life that came up with the strange idea of serving schnitzel with fried eggs. 🤣 I don't know why the heck they call it Hamburg Schnitzel. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Each area of Germany has its own specialties. Take a look at the videos of Deana and Phil, a German/American couple who often make videos about local specialties from all over Germany during their travels. Their Christmas market videos are also interesting.

Ok, first of, i'm a Bavarian and spent over a decade in Munich. The Dude went to Bergwolf (which a former co-worker of mine loves) and to the Augustiner Bräustuben, or "Breistuam" as i'd say ;) These are solid choices for Munich, Augustiner makes the best beer imho, so going there or to the "Augustinerkeller" makes sense. Apart from that i'd recommend trying a traditional bavarian breakfast, i.e. Weißwürste, süßer Senf, Brezen und Weißbier (=veal sausages, sweet mustard, pretzels and wheat beer). The Leberkäse also is one of Bavaria's most popular foods and is often eaten in a bread roll, however it depends on the butcher whether we enjoy it or not^^ And for the restaurants i'd add "Lindwurmstüberl" (for it's view) and "Atzinger" or even "Zur Schwalbe" (if you want to bowl and eat).

You surely have to consider that the prices are final, other than in the US, there you are expected to add about 20% (even more) for tipping and all taxes are included. So the prices are really decent and fair.
@combatduckie
@combatduckie 8 ай бұрын
true, but remember contrary to what some uneducated people sometimes write on the internet, tipping IS expected at German table-served restaurants, too, however, not as much moneywise as in the U.S. Usually, in Germany you simply round up the bill and give somewhat around 5-15 %, which is the "standard" tip percentage in Germany. E.g., if your bill is 26 Euros you give 30, if it s 18 Euros, you give 20, if at a cafe it is 8 Euros, you give 10 Euros....etc...To tip ZERO is considered VERY RUDE and chavy in Germany...and the waitress will think she did something wrong because you didn t tip her anything.
@dirkbutendeich3334
@dirkbutendeich3334 8 ай бұрын
@@combatduckie Well, as a German, I would like to disagree here: It is by no means that a tip is expected, but yes, most give a small tip, but not in the range of 10% to 15%, but as you write one rounds up. So at least my experience, yours may be different. Generally I also give a small tip, not only in restaurants, for example also at the hairdresser, if the service was better than expected in my eyes. My post also mainly refers to the fact that you can't simply compare prices between USA and GER. Thanks for your reply and have a nice day!

Good reaction. Looks like the germans have taken over another channel. 😂 A few things I noticed and wanted to talk about real quick. You talked about protein/carbs proportion, in this cases it might be true, but the big weakness of us as germans, is our love for bread and pastries, You have a bakery on every corner of the street(not really, but sometimes it feels like!) Many people get their food for the day at work there, cause it's quick and easy. I am a nutrition/fitness/health coach and have to deal with it. Carbs are a problem in germany! The prices, outside of munich, should be still the same today, as they were back then in munich. Munich is a very expensive city to live in. If you are ever planning a trip to germany, feel free to contact me. I can show you some nice places in my area(northern bavaria) and a guest room should be no problem aswell. "Mi casa es tu casa" is what I try to live by. I am also interested in learning about other peoples' way of life, so I have my benefits aswell.

@@pallmall1991 From a purely biological point of view, this is of course the case. However, if carbohydrates were completely avoided, the menu would be quite restricted. Humanity hasn't been eating these since yesterday and is therefore not extinct yet ;-)) The quantity makes the poison, as a rule.

I don't like Bavarian white sausages at all. I'd rather eat the delicious Mühlenbecker Krakauer or the Rostbratwurst (roasted sausage). There are doner kebabs in different variations, there are spaetzle, there is pizza (sometimes with fish fingers), there are casseroles, there are sandwiches, bread with meat (at medieval festivals), mushrooms with onions, or our Mediterranean fish specialities here in the north. Baked fish in batter, or lapskaus with cucumbers and fried potatoes, fish meatballs, crabs on bread, meat salad, potato salad, or various salads (with mayonnaise), salmon in a roll or rollmops (sour herring fillet wrapped around a cucumber), and much more.

There will be restaurants or biergardens where you're obviously gonna have some old school staff which wont be able to properly communicate but it is gonna be a rare occasion. Most problems (especially the menu item ones) are gonna be solvable by you googling shit and pointing fingers. If that doesn't work out just ask other customers if they'll help you out communicating.
