The Festival of Remembrance is always moving. It culminates in the citing of lines from Binyon's poem, 'For the Fallen', "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them." followed by the last post and poppy drop in silence. Then some lines from another famous poem is cited, "When you go home Tell them of us and say For your tomorrow We gave our today" Always brings a lump to my throat.

I always cry when I hear this..also I actually managed to see my brother on TV doing the march past the Cenotaph and taking the salute from Prince William..now the Prince of Wales. Rememberence Sunday brings me to tears every year without fail. My brother lost a lot of his friends in Afghanistan so to see my bro emotional just about finishes me off.

I VOW TO THEE MY COUNTRY is our unofficial national anthem which many of us British would love as our Nation Anthem with all due respect to His Majesty the King. Remembrance Day is celebrated in all Commonwealth countries……” the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month “. We shall remember them. The red poppy is the symbol of Remembrance Day. Especially in Canada the poem “ In Flanders Fields “ is recited or sung. It was written by John McRae a Lt. Col. Canadian Doctor . It is a day of solemn reflection on the sacrifice given by all our fallen heroes, and to honour those who have served in previous conflicts. As well we honour our current military personnel.

Each of the flags will be from a local branch of the Royal British Legion. I guess the nearest equivalent would be the Veterans of Foreign Wars but the modern RBL although it provides services to veterans and their families encourage anyone to join. The RBL started in 1921 after the first world war to look after ex servicemen and provide places for them to meet.

The music is from Gustav Holst - The Planet Suite - Jupiter .... An English composer ..... Rememberance Dyy - the signing of the armistice The 11th hour of the 11th month 1918. "The war to end all wars" . We now commemorate this day to remember all those who gave their life in conflict, that we may have our freedom. This message is more relevant now than ever before. Remembrance Sunday is a day dedicated to remembering our fallen veterans who died in defence of our country, and all who served on our behalf. Our Royal Family lead the ceremony, and most Brits participate in some way, even if it's only buying and wearing a Red Poppy. All proceeds from the sale of poppies in the UK go to the Royal British Legion in support of British troops, vets, and their families. The red poppy is a symbol of the poppy fields in Flanders during WWI, where we lost many soldiers, and it's since been adopted in many other countries. I believe you use it now too for your Veterans Day. There's a beautiful poem called "In Flanders Field" that's worth looking up, as well as the story of "The Unknown Soldier". Both from WW1 Personally I remember my grandad (by marriage but still dear to me), who died in his early 90's, but served as a spitfire gunner in the 2nd world war.

Love your respect my friend. OK so you did not know the event, that's fine, but had the courtesy to ask. Props to you. Remembrance Sunday is similar to Memorial Day, the American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, but held on the Sunday after the 11th day of the 11th Month. But is possibly far more significant as it remembers all British and Commonwealth losses in combat. The 11th day of the 11th month is celebrated as 'Armistice Day' on the day whenever it falls in the week to mark the end of WWI for British and Commonwealth countries when the UK alone lost over 880,000 men.

For me, the moment of the Festival of Remembrance is when a million poppy petals are released to fall on the bared heads of the servicemen and women on parade below......it's moving, it's poignant, and it is a fitting moment to remember those who died in the service of their country.....

I think what you are seeing is the gathering of the Veterans, the orchestra and the muster for the Drum Head service of remembrance which is hosted by the Royal British Legion whose members are represented by the local legion standards carried around the centre of the auditorium. After this you would see the full band gather, again slowly assembling the drums into the traditional battle field alter with the book of remembrance with all the services losses listed in it from years of war. After that members of the regular forces will slowly form up for the blessing. At this point with the service people assembled two minutes silence will be started with the sounding of Last Post. During the silence thousands and thousands of red poppy petals slowly flutter down on to the participants. This is broadcast commonwealth wide and is the start of the remembrance celebration culminating with the massive March past and wreath laying ceremony including the Royal Family and the Prime Minister and representative Members of Parliament. The March past is is with full military bands playing and British And Commonwealth forces marching past including surviving veterans of the two world wars, including WWII civilian organisations like the fire service of Bombed London, Nursing service also Korean vets and Gurkhas and other Arms of the services represented. These two ceremonies take place every year on the Saturday night and Sunday morning of the weekend closest to Armistice Day. On the day itself (November 11th) the country is quieted for two minutes at 11:00 am with the guns of the household cavalry firing a salute in one of the City Centre parks. Happy New Year to you and yours, thank you for your interest.

Whilst the music by British composer Holst, from his Planets Suite it may be patriotic but not specifically for Britain, it never mentions the country, and Cecil Rice whose poem was used for the words is pluralistic "And there's another country, I've heard of long ago Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know...." , whereas the Rule Britannia and Jerusalem are both about our nation, or in the latter's case about England.

The first world war ended officially on the signing of the armistice at 11 o'clock on the 11 th of November 11am 11/11/1918 We British honour all the dead in wars past on the nearest Sunday to the 11 th of November. This is symbolised by wearing a red poppy as a personal expression and with a nation wide two minutes silence and every village, town and city having a ceremony to remember all those who lost their lives ( including the enemy of the time).... The ceremonies during day time are followed by more elaborate tributes usually by the military bands of each section of the armed forces... This is to make sure we never forget them. On the cenotaph, built in honour of the military and civilians all round the world has a simple but clear inscription Lest we forget..... If you want to have your emotions aroused check out the history of the Tomb of the unknown soldier " in Westminster abbey.... it's an amazing story

I'm so glad you liked this, the Festival of Remembrance is an example of how most British people would like to be seen. I think there's always a fear that we might give up our respect for war dead but I think as long as there is war, sadly, these events will seem necessary. You may also like to see something related to this, the work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, which cares for the graves and memorials of those British and Commonwealth forces around the world. If you search their database you will find some in the US. Recently there have been belated efforts to commemorate the African soldiers and labourers who also died in their service. This video sums up what the CWGC does: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7iafpVkksqXkp8.htmlsi=FMnN-KSyibNUxI76

Remembrance is an occasion marked in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other realms within the Commonwealth, to mark the supreme sacrifice made by members of the Armed Forces in the defense of our Freedoms, in all wars. Remembrance Day is celebrated by all as well to mark those who died defending us. We will not Forget Them. Look for the poppies put out at the Tower f London in 1914- each made of porcelain and each represents one forces person who did not survive their war - starting with WWI, then WWII and Korea but really for all. WWI is especially poignant with the high numbers of casualties which the poppies visually express. The visusal of all those porcelain poppies representing a UK/Commonwealth life lost leave your jaw on the floor. The visual is so stunning.

The military drums ruin this. It's supposed to be a pacifist song.

Erm, the first verse is about making the "final sacrifice" for your country. The second verse is even more explicit about fighting for your country (the playing of the drums is particularly appropriate for the line "I hear the noise of battle, the thunder of her guns"). The third verse is about finding peace in heaven, yes, but that doesn't magically make the first two verses not exist. It's melancholy, it's sombre, it's not pacifist.

The song is not a pacifist song it is a song about remembering the people who gave up their lives for our country, the majority being in the military so the drums make it even better.
