There have been plenty of players who have been more skilful than Jonah Lomu but, especially for his era, he had amazing physical gifts of strength, pace, balance, and determination. Teams were not used to wings that were that big but still fast and athletic; he triggered a hunt for huge, fast backs

Richie McCaw is the Goat. But he’s a forward so he’s not flashy like Jonah. Richies won more games than most people have played. And he has a win rate of 89%. He’s the only person to win a rugby World Cup as captain twice. He played for 14 years and only lost 15 times. He also won rugby player of the decade (2011-2020) even though he retired in 2015. There’s also Dan Carter. Who is the top points score ever (1598 with second highest points scorer being 352 pints behind Dan.) He has a win rate of 88%. And Played with Richie. Both of them have won world rugby player of the year 3 times each. They are the only 2 who have done so.

Enjoying your reactions and watching you learn the sport. Just a quick one: a scrum is a method of restarting play, and the forwards of both sides are involved in it. What you thought was a scrum was actually called a ruck, which happens during open play. The ruck forms after a player is tackled, and both teams commit a few players to it to clear out the opposition players, and to try and retrieve the ball from the ground

Alot of these highlights on youtube refer more to significant or important tries in the context of the game or competition rather than pure stunning tries, just to put these in perspective. I have yet to see a pure compilation of nothing but rugby magic

Here are a few brilliant, some very good, some memorable and some run of the mill tries. Enjoyable but hardly the best rugby tries of all time. Once more all are from the past few years, being British I would have to include those from the British Lions tours of 1971 and 1974, but I wonder how many who put these sort of videos together have even looked at the incredible teams there. And looking with my World Rugby head on, the All Blacks, Springbok and Australian/Wallabies sides from those eras. Move through the years from then and many tries to make these seem run of the mill. Great to see you enjoying the sport though👍!

For Jonah Lomu and the GOAT discussion, it's ... complicated. I believe that in terms of pure specs, palmares and/or statistics, Lomu's marks have been stepped over (though not by the same players for all three aspects), and so he can fairly be considered to have worthy challengers for that title (though his would be the first name I would put in the pot) However, instead of debating such a transient concept as GoAT (as the All Time means it'll always be, if not challenged, at least challengeable), there a much more permanent, unerasable accolade to give him, and that's how transformative he was to the game itself. There definitely is a pre-Lomu rugby era and a post-Lomu era for Rugby. So *many* tactics of the 2000s were either trying to emulate Lomu's success, or were developed as anti-Lomu-type counters, and teams started/intensified scouting for similar body types for wingers.

If a player is down, unless they require sending off and substitution (which is permanent) it is up to them to get up and get back in the fray as quickly as possible. This is why over comitment to a tackle leaves defensive holes

Any NFL player could convert to rugby Union, but as you see, it’s 2 x 40 minute halves of continual running, so cardio conditioning is a must, and tackle conditioning to take the huge hits without pads..and that may be harder. If you start rugby as a kid, you’ll be a bulldozer by the time you get to representative rugby😂😂😂 I’ve grown up in New Zealand playing rugby and I’m 60yrs old, and I have to say that I’m pushed hard to think of anyone national or International player that commands the presence that Jonah does on any field he runs onto, and who is loved, and hated by oppositions every time he runs onto the field.
@RealFansSports
@RealFansSports Жыл бұрын
Thank you Sky for checking out the video and posting a comment as well. We truly appreciate it. But you just may be right as well with the conditioning aspect of the 2 different games. There is a lot less stop and start in Union compared to the NFL.

USA are making headway in the 7 a side game. They have been winning games against top teams. Most national teams select a lot of their players from their 7s international tournament players. I have been following the USA MLR, and considering how fast the game has grown, and the talent that MRL are producing, teams like the All Blacks, Spring Boks, Argentina, England, Ireland, Scotland, etc have already got team USA on their radar. Your biggest future problem, will be trying to select 15 players, plus substitutes, out of the thousands of talented players throughout your vast country. Can’t wait for you guys to launch, an interstate competition…rugby draws arena filling crowds, and of course sports companies and advertising companies are rubbing their hands as they see the financial forecast. Good on you for watching ARL, I tried several times, but I kept screaming, ‘ Run ya bugger, no need to dribble ‘..😂😂😂 as a 6’5” Samoan, I just preferred the game with the most contact I suppose..😂😂😂 blessings be with you and on your house and family bro!👍🏽👍🏽

A bit of context for 12:28 - 12:50 * At the moment you looked up the score, it was already a replay and the points were already added - the 5 points (for scoring a try). So Japan *was* trailing (by three), and this score gave them a last second (the red clock top left means we're in injury time, beyond the regulation 80' and the next deadball finishes the game), from-behind upset. * And what an upset it was! Japan was considered (not without good reason) a lower tier team in terms of skill level - especially compared to South Africa, who is a recurrent World Cup title contender (and in fact are the title holders, having won the 2019 WC). * In US Football 🏈 terms, imagine if the XFL champion had defeated a regularly-in-the-playoffs NFL team. * It was so unexpected, even *the SA fans* were like "it hurts to lose, but what you guys did is awesome"

@@RealFansSports It also took place in a neutral venue (Brighton, England). Most of the attendees would've been neutral and would've tacitly supported Japan as the underdog team but as soon as it was obvious that Japan were in for the fight, the atmosphere turned up to 11. I was in a pub in England at the time, one of a handful of people who went along specifically to watch the game, the remaining punters weren't all that interested initially but by the end of the game the entire pub was on their feet celebrating the Japan try (barring a single South African). Wonderful times.

@@RealFansSports There are some 'quicker' number 8s but you also need 'mass' there, so late in the game it's a bit unfair on the forward. Back in the 1970s, we (England) had a very tall, rangy/muscular, number 8 with a remarkable turn of speed with long legs and very high knee lift; he would be a superstar in the professional era. His name was Andy Ripley.

I agree re your nfl player (looked him up). I think arguably the best thing up and coming college teams could do would be to play rugby league in the off season. Now hear me out. Still young enough to get improved. Will dramatically improve tackling. And would massively improve overall conditioning of players. Sure hand egg would be the in season game (its where the money is) but league during the off season would result in a college football team with really confident open play, and a world better tacking

Anyone can play Rugby if you learn good technique both for defence and offence. Be able to run a full 80 minutes with a 15 minute break at on the 40th minute. Be prepared for possible overtime should it be a tied game. Have the courage to join a club and sign up. You don’t need to be a Neanderthal to play, just have good form and technical skills of the game. Which comes with playing the game itself and turning up to every training with the only excuse being you only have an hour to live. Even then you can train for half an hour ... The best athletes in every sport 🏈 know you need to give everything at that moment to your sport. Or you can be mediocre and lazy in training and attitude. May as well stay home and watch the big boys. I really want to see the Sport of Rugby 🏉 to be embraced in every nation except those under sanctions 😂 in particular Putin’s Barbarian Team.
