This is our American Tang Soo Do intermediate form number 4. We call it Pyung Ahn Sah Dan. In this video I discuss how to do each move and what the interpretation is.

Years ago I was an avid Tae Kwon Do practitioner and this was pyung ahn 4...some of our hand positions were slightly different as well as subtle transition differences but the moves were exactly the same.

Awesome, I know this kata or form as Heian Yondon from the Shito Ryu style

It actually has some of its roots in Karate styles. A lot of people don't realize that after the Japanese Occupation of South Korea ended that the first Korean Martial Arts Kwons (schools) that opened updated and evolved their individual Taekyeon styles with elements of the Japanese styles that had been taught during the occupation. These influences included Goju-Ryu, Shorin-Ryu, Shito-Ryu, Shotokan, and Judo. This form even had its equivalent in the very first Tae Kwon Do forms taken from Shotokan.

Same, but I am a Shotokan practitioner. I've seen alot of Tang Soo Do forms that are adaptations of Karate Kata. All the Heian katas, the Tekki katas, and bassai sho and bassai dai, have some sort of adaptation in TSD

I loved this video. I definitely see the similarities between the Tang Soo Do variant of Pyong Ahn Sah Dahn and its counterpart from Chang Moo Kwon Tae Kwon Do. As someone who is doing research on the link between Korean Style Martial Arts and the Japanese-Okinawan Karate styles, I can even see how the old Pinan and Heian forms became these forms. Also, you delivered a very understandable and well-structured instructional video here. I believe I had previously commented on another video about how I like how you do your forms and that is still true here. Also, since I last commented on one of your videos I have successfully gotten my 2d Dahn in Ji Do Kwon Tae Kwon Do.

That's a slightly modified Heain yondan (the 4th basic kata) of Shotokan (which borrow them from Shorin-ryu's Anko Itosu))

In my style we call this Pinan 4 and the way I was taught it had a little less flare to it but I might actually add some of this to it to give it some personality.

This is one of my favorite gup/kyu level kata (shotokan so we call it heian). Kankudai is by far my favorite in all which I believe you call kung san kun in TSD.

Awesome video Sensei Ichi, happy new year by the way, all the best for this 2021. We also have this kata or form in Kyokushin Karate, however we call it 'Pinan Sono Yon' it is the fourth of five 'Pinan' katas for us. While it is 90% identical to your Tang Soo Do version, our one differs 10% in terms of some of the stances, some of the blocks, strikes such as some of the punches, knife hand techniques, blocks and stances, when it comes to what we call in Japanese: (bunkai) meaning application! It is intriguing to see that we have numerous techniques, katas and basics, somewhat similar, given that both of our styles, had elements of Shotokan Karate, as part of their foundations, though in our case we also take components from Goju-Ryu Karate, Judo, boxing, and also Korean Kenpo, since our founder Sosai Oyama Masutatsu, was actually South Korean in terms of his ethnicity, though he had migrated as a youth to Japan. I would definitely like to see more of your Tang Soo Do forms, to see how much different or similar yet again, they might be to our Kyokushinkaikan Karate forms. Greetings as always to you and your father, Grandmaster Dennis Ichikawa, from Melbourne, Australia🇦🇺🇲🇽🙏🥋🤟✌👍😊Osu!

I have a question that doesn't relate to this form, but I hope you can answer. GM Dan Nolan teaches a 4th and 5th Kicho hyung. I have GM Hwang Khee and GM Norris's books. I have never seen these forms anywhere else. They are actually good forms. I'm reaching out to you because I am both a subscriber to you and GM Nolan. The Kicho forms can be seen on his you tube channel, but no comments/questions are allowed. I'm wondering if you have ever heard of these two hyungs or know who created them.

@@barrettokarate thank you for responding. I have GM Norris's book that shows his Kicho forms. I like them because it has more variety in the techniques than the original Kichos. BTW GM Hwang Khee's Kichos are just a slight variation of Shotokan's Takyoku forms. I like GM Norris's version of the Pinans (Heians). He uses the back stance instead of the cat stance. He is the first instructor that I saw to make this change. I know that he trained in Shotokan which uses the back stance alot. But recently I have seen two of his TSD teachers using the back stance. Thanks again for responding.

this form is nothing more than the techniques of the five intermediate kata of japanese/okinawan karate. primarily the kata heian yondan (heian number four). not bad performance. now go to someone like "ian abernethy" to see how it is applied in real self defence.
