As a student in the 1960's of Chung Do Kwan (Tae Kwon Do), and years later an instructor, I would like to make a suggestion concerning board breaking. The students holding the boards cross the rear legs which i believe is correct. But i would make the front stance deeper but more importantly hand position. What i observed was each holder had their arms, holding the top and bottom, on the same of the board(s). I submit to keep their top arms in the same position, but to cross the bottom arms over to the opposite corner, forming an "X". This will increase strength and structure to the stance. Also, to bend the head down, turning it to the outside, so as to avoid being struck in the face by flying boards. When the student preparing to complete the break, upon the loud kiap, that was the signal for the holders to lock the arms, tighten the stance, preparing for the breaking attempt. We were taught holding the boards, was an honor and an art, within itself. Just food for thought.

We had a testing candidate who was sensitive to that kind of noise.

@@DigitalDojang Not to be fault finding, but if a student is "sensitive to that type of noise", perhaps he or she is not prepared to test, hopefully continue training, until ready.

That's good. A lightweight breaking a board with a backfist is pretty good. Is he testing for 2nd Dan? Also impressed iwth kids breaking.

Interesting. As an Isshinryu student, I don't agree with single bone blocks, but I do agree with the teaching of reinforced blocking and torquing into blocks, which can be useful when fighting a larger opponent. Recommend a Cross-style seminar with A.J. Advincula or Michael Calandra. It seems Isshinryu and Tang Soo Do have much to learn from one another. Also could try Michael Storms of Mandeville Louisiana, all Grand Masters. I have a question about belt ranks in your system. What does red mean? First Kyu? What about the white stripes? is it two stripes then test for next belt? In Isshinryu karate and Gracie BJJ, Red is reserved for Masters and GMs only, so that's a little weird to me to see a style that has red as a Kyu. 26:00 Awesome. Good good good. You teach "combined striking". So there's a reverse wrist lock, kick, and 12 to 6 elbow to finish. Good stuff. Too many styles of "Karate" have abandoned grappling altogether, which is sad to me. A good Karate student should learn all strikes and should learn all blocks and submissions they can manage to study, to maximize how well rounded they are. 28:00 double cross-arm wrist lock is good stuff. The "upside down full wrist lock thingie i've NEVER seen" (sorry dont' know what you call it) I've never seen, but it tapped the other candidate, so I assume it hurts pretty badly. I'll have to practice that one. lol. I thought i knew every wrist lock that existed. I was also impressed with the fact all of your students can do a respectable double-kick. Isshinryu is not known fro double kicks, in fact only one kata uses a double kick, which is Chinto Kata, and we never trained double kicks, although our black belts COULD do them and I could do them, they simply werent' encouraged in training. The explanation was that the isshinryu GMs wanted us to focus on high percentage attacks, but in reality if you are "good enough" the double kick is high percentage.

Thanks for detailed comments. Good stuff. Red is between 3rd and 1st Kyu (Gup in Korean). The two white stripes on their midnight blue belt (black belt equivalent) means 2nd Dan. A third stripe means 3rd Dan. At 28:00, the double cross arm lock works best the arms cross fully at the elbow or higher. The participants didn't quite hit that. The upside down wrist lock is the standard Aikido Sankyu. The Moo Duk Kwan system is a striking style. We are not well versed in ground fighting like grappling but we do work techniques that bring people to the ground such as sweeps, joint locks, and throws. When taken to the floor, we strike to move ourselves back to our feet. Cross training can help close that gap if that is important to someone. I enjoyed your commentary. I can tell you are quite knowledgeable. Thank you!
