We rebelled against the British, in large part due to taxes. So we take taxes very seriously. We want to know exactly how much we are being taxed. If you just include it in the final price, we would never know how much the government taxes us. As for the vendor it's not that hard, taxes change once a year at most, usually longer. They just input the new percentage into a computer program and it does all the calculations.

Really? That's exactly how it used to be in the US Southern states! But now we can buy alcohol like beer & wine at the grocery store, but you still have to purchase liquor at a different store, and there aren't many liquor stores around. We can't purchase spirits on Sundays either. How interesting it was so similar to Sweden not too long ago!

I'm from the UK but I've seen that Canada does it the same way as you.

Same in the state where I live in the U.S. You have to go to a liquor store to buy beer or wine. But our liquor stores are generally open until fairly late (9 or 10 p.m.). The county where I live now has no restrictions about selling alcohol on Sundays, but I used to live in a county where the liquor stores were closed on Sunday. If you wanted beer that day (and I sometimes did) you could only buy it as a "package" sale (i.e. take-out) over the counter at a bar.

@@bodyofhope Yep, it's basically a remnant from our prohibition period. We were all drunkards 100 years ago or so, so the government put a stop to it by making a monopoly on it. So all alcohol is still sold only by the government and it's pretty strict to this day, which is both good and bad according to different people.

@@yasminesteinbauer8565 Yes, you can drink outside at your house and anywhere on your own property. And because a lot of houses in the U.S. (although not all by any means) have a little bit of yard (what the Brits call a "garden"), this is commonly done. It's pretty common to have a fire pit for campfires in your back yard. Some people also have a pool (less common). You have friends and neighbors over for a cook-out, and you can then sit around the fire with some beers or a couple of bottles of wine to share. We do that as long as the weather allows.

In Texas, not sure about other states, but it is legal to drink while tubing down the river. There are rules such as no glass or littering. Which littering is illegal by itself. But I don't know what other states do that. 🤣

As someone with chronic pain due to a degenerative condition, this has made my life over the last decade or so harder to deal with. Any time my doctor moves or retires, I have to fight with my new doctor to prove why I need to continue taking the medications that have been working. I have had doctors straight up refuse.

The U.S. has a huge separate state mentality. There is federal law enforcement, state has their own, county/parish have their own, then city/township have their own. Marijuana is illegal in some states, and legal in others. There is a federal tax % for the country, a different state tax % for each, a different county/parish tax for each, then cities and townships have their tax %. So, the same $10,000 car in one city could cost $10,500 there, and $11,000 in the next city nearby.

Its because its really different in every state, and even the county. You can drive 10 minutes away the tax will be 8 to 6 percent. The good thing that tax is not high like in Europe. I feel things are expensive in the US until I go shopping in the EU lol

@@Rooo8 Prices are often negotiated between the manufacturer and the retailer. The retailer agrees to sell at a specific price (sometimes even printed on the packaging by the manufacturer) at all of their locations, but it is inevitable that they will have different taxes at almost every location. Anything else would require the retailers to pay the taxes, but even then some tax laws strictly forbid them from doing so.

@@juleb.7163 yes and because of that the prices will rise and at the end it was for nothing and the only winner from that will be the government. The only thing that would be helpful on a long term is lowering taxes, but with a left government the taxes will only rise.

@@juleb.7163 That's true. I live in Texas. We used to be able to buy it in Walmart. Not sure if we still can. But if we go to sporting goods stores such as Academy or Dicks Sporting Goods they sell guns and ammo. Born and raised in Texas so it's kind of normal for me to see.

U.S. Department of Labor requires a minimum $2.13 cash wage for tipped employees. Then, each state will have their minimum requirement. Louisiana, my state, requires the federal minimum of $2.13, while Oregon requires minimum of $12.75. I never agreed with the service tip concept.

@@imthethevillainofyourstory2670 Raising the minimum wage is their solution to inflation, which actually makes the situation worse. But, that's a whole other political argument.

Tipping minimum wage is different than the federal min. of $7.50. It varies greatly by state, so I live in CO where it's like $11 if you're a waiter now but in some states it's still $2.50 ish then you get alot of tips on top that equal to over the min. wage. It basically just doesn't come from the employer unless you average less than $7.50.

Texas does not have state tax on vehicle purchases, but Louisiana does. I know what you mean with FL taxes on a new motorcycle, then LA had their hand out for their registration taxes on a depreciated value of the same motorcycle. Don't get me started with paying state sales tax on a $10,000 piece of equipment for a business, then paying state property tax yearly on that same piece of equipment.

It's exactly the same in Europe actually. Most of the products are made in the same factories for several countries BUT the taxes are included in the price. Moreover In don't understand the issue with sticker price as I think every store is free to choose it's own price on every item so then the price doesn't only vary from state to state but from store to store. The last thing you mentioned.os also very common in Europe, I know at least French people crossing the border to fill up their gas tank in Spain or to buy cigarettes in Andorra as both of them are very expensive because of being highly taxed here.

@@noefillon1749 Prices aren't always set by the store. There is often a contract between retailers and manufacturers/distributors setting certain prices for the entire chain of retailers. A Walmart in one location is required to sell the product for the same price as the Walmart ten miles down the road, but the taxes can be vastly different. Many products have prices printed on the packaging that retailers are required to sell it for. Trying to account for literally thousands of different tax rates within a single state would be insane, not to mention for interstate and national items. Combine this with the fact that some tax laws require the consumer specifically to pay an amount based on the sticker price - the retailer cannot pay it, and it cannot, by law, be included in the sticker price. Don't mess with governments' money, and when governments overlap it's best to keep things basic and add it on.

Do you include taxes in the price per ounce calculations required for comparing items in some places? This goes down a major rabbit hole network made by thousands of rabbits who don't acknowledge any other rabbits exist.

Why don't the price labels vary with the different states in line with the different tax regulations?

I love how you conveniently ignore the fact that the punchline of the joke was not about the exact amount of percentage of the tax but rather about it not being portrayed on the price tag. The same goes for the beer joke. The funny part is not about at what time they stop selling you a product but rather that they stop selling a certain product at all. That's like *"Hey ma'am, are you stupid? Put back that peanut butter jar, It's tuesday and we only sell those on mondays and fridays"*

Labor laws in the US are quite fvcked up. There's not a standard and it differs from state to state and even between different occupations. But the McDonald's example you gave is not correct, since they can't pay less than minimum and that at the moment is $13 an hour were I live, but they offer around $15, otherwise no one will want to work there.

Personally as a waitress I prefer getting tipped bc I can make way more than if I got paid the minimum wage. And if for some reason I don’t make enough money that day (don’t meet the hourly minimum wage made in tips) then my job just pays me the minimum wage that day. I love it bc it gives me an opportunity to make more money with the tips.

@@LCdic09 in Europe there is not this paid per hour (in some jobs there is!) If you are hired you must be paid at least with the minimum wage which provides you quite enough money! Even in Hellas that our economy is pretty f** up the minimum wage is 650-700€ Getting paid 15$ per hour and demand from someone to tip you… makes no sense since you are already paid to do this job. But of course, as I’ve said we give the change to the waiter or the employee. Because we kinda want to show him that we are thankful for the service not because we feel sorry about him and if we don’t tip him he’s gonna have less money. This is like blackmailing the customers! In food services we are paid every month not with per day and usually that means more money. Also, we have a minimum wage, that means that no one is allowed to pay you less! That amount of money is around 650-700€ per month and we are most of the times tipping the employees so they have their extras! That happens in my country which has not the best economy in Europe… I reckon things could be much better in countries like Norway, Switzerland, Germany, UK… etc Yes, I’m Hellene (Greek is not correct btw). Things are getting worst and worst here because the Government supposed to help the people, sometimes they give us more money and then we have to pay more and more taxes…

@@Kolious_Thrace You shouldn’t talk about US when you do not know anything about it. In US, McDonald workers do not ask for tips nor will most of the people top them. Their pay will range from state to state and they are not paid below minimum wage. So when done calculations with $13 per hour and 40 hours a week it will be around $2000 which is very less but not what you said. The waitress or servers who work for tip will always out earn minimum wage. People do give lots of tip and those servers will make lot compared to fast food workers (From my experience of talking with those workers).

In Germany you tip as well, but there is no must. It usally applies to waiters, taxi drivers, hair dresser, ... it is more an appreciation of personal service: so if food or drinks are brought to your table you would tip. If you get street food to take away or you have to carry your drinks by your own from a bar, you wouldn't tip. The golden rule would be 10% ... with a taxi driver you would just round up ... and hair dresser gets some extra coins or bill, which she or he can keep by herself.

Patrons are always responsible for the wait staff's paycheck. Some would rather have all of it included in the prices on the menu, and some prefer to subsidize it through tips. There are pros and cons to both. Most good wait staff prefer tips to a higher base wage because they can make a lot more money, especially at high-end restaurants. One of my friends was a waitress at a very nice restaurant when I worked as a senior customer service rep for a wireless company. Her wage was about 1/4 what I made (which was rather high for the industry at the time), but she brought home three times what I did. She also brought home twice what some of her coworkers made because she was really good at her job.

You always pay most through the menu cost. In the US, tips are part of the cost of dining out. Like I said, there are pros and cons to both tipping and higher base wages, but most good wait staff prefer tipping over a higher wage. Determining employee pay is not the manager's responsibility, nor is it even within their permission in most restaurants. Pay is normally negotiated by the owner. If it is a chain, then the General Manager (who acts in lieu of the owner for that location) may have some leeway but usually still has to follow specific pay guidelines from the owners/corporate. Most people in the US are willing to pay more for better service. Higher wages will be reflected in higher menu prices. Ideally, the higher menu prices will average to what you would otherwise pay with an average tip. If the server is particularly good, they are not rewarded and will typically leave for better opportunities. If the server id bad, people stop going to the restaurant at all because they aren't willing to pay that higher price for bad service, then everyone loses. I've seen this happen in places where the restaurant decided to pool tips and divide the money between all wait staff based on hours worked. It was supposed to help those working less lucrative shifts and make it "fair". Good wait staff just left.
