I was 13 the first time I heard The Weight on the radio- it was by Jackie DeShannon, who did a good version. I had no clue about the lyrics...over many years, friends and me discussed- what could they be talking about. Now I'm 67- and have read so much about what Robbie Robertson MIGHT have meant. I guess it's like my Dad used to say- " no good deed goes unpunished."

wow not seen this before. Fantastic that Richard thompson is recognised in this company. So under-rated here in the UK. And, when i first heard Brittany Howard, I thought how great she would sound on this song. During her solo you can see the warmth and admiration in the eyes of the older guys in the band. To have been part of that song's creation 50 years ago and hear it being delivered again like that must bring a new level of enjoyment and meaning.

Everybody, including me, pulled into Nazareth back in those days. Nazareth, PA. (circa 1968 for me.) They boasted of their race car drivers (Mario Andretti, et al billboards) , fine, but for us, they had something much more incredible and alluring, something of which they never ever boasted back then - a small non-descript rectangular building with about 6 busy craftsmen inside, slowly crafting these beautiful upscale guitars in various phases of completion - MARTIN GUITAR CO. Nazareth, PA

my dad raced against Unser senior but didn't qualify when he tried out at Indianapolis. Nazareth about 1/2 past 8 is dark and the inn is full; Its time for you to let Jesus be born in your olé-racecar-garage-of-a-life and clean it up for good with his death, blood and resurrection.

I saw Robbie Robertson on CBS Sunday morning talking about writing this song. He said he looked into the base of his guitar and saw it was made in Nazareth, Pennsylvania and he thought Nazareth was a beautiful word. "So I thought "Pulled into Nazareth, I was feeling half past dead. I think I have something here". Boy did you ever Mr. Roberson! Boy did you ever!! One of the best songs ever written in my opinion.

Lost my mom to cancer in March of 2012…Levon died from cancer a month later. A week or so after that, we were at a Light The Night cancer walk and benefit in New Smyrna Beach Florida. They had a large board up at the stage and encouraged people to write loved ones names who we lost in the last year since the last walk. I of course put my moms name, but had to put Levon’s name too. Such a great influence on my musical journey over the years…

Sometimes with all the great songs from our pasts we file away many on the shelves in our minds. Then along comes a crisis, such as the one we are now encountering, and those good old songs drop off those shelves into our consciousness. This an excellent song for now and what all the first responders, medical personnel, and all those day in day out are contending. How, many wish the load could be taken off their shoulders, at least for a while that they may get some respite from the battle? Almost all are faceless, some behind masks while others behind walls or those individuals outside simply doing what they do best, their work. Under appreciated until the crisis hits and still doing their work but some thrust into an unwanted limelight. A limelight that exposes them to us the recipients of their labors. Labors that take care of the water, electricity to our homes, the food from farm to store to table, that keep our lives as normal as possible. And those whose labors tend to the infirm, sick and dying, labors that drain their whole bodies as they give of themselves and too often they join those they treat and care for. We don’t see their faces but we should never take their labors for granted and never ever forget to give the honor the deserve fighting for us. Energies and emotions drained they still show up for the fight and we should do all in our power to support them and give them our thanks, always.

Rarely does one see as much talent on one stage. Amy Helm, who proves the adage the fruit don't fall far from the tree. Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams, who with Amy were a huge part of Levon's musical celebration of life in his later years. Bonnie Raitt.... well, enough said. Sir Richard Thompson, said by many to be the finest living guitarist. Emmylou Harris with her former guitarist and uber producer Buddy Miller. Buddy's partner in crime Jim Lauderdale. The unique voice of John Hiatt. Bassist and another uber producer Don Was. Shining light Sam Bush. Booker T. Jones, and fellow M.G.'s drummer Al Jackson and bassist Lewis Steinberg, the legends. And Brittany Howard, who along with Amy, are keeping the torch lit for the future. God bless you Levon, and all that you have mightily influenced.

Jeff Delaney Yeah was talking bout this song in particular being somewhat of a folk rock anthem. Well aware of the Musicians from up north. Been a Band’ fan since 60s. Robbie Robertson’ is Mixed blood Iroquois/Mohawk’ Indian- from six nations reserve Ontario! -My G Grandmother was 1/2 Iroquois from the same Reserve in Ontario’. The Iroquois homeland was originally Upper New York State region. Robertson no doubt felt the connection with both America & Canadian roots as his songwriting reflects it -and of course Levon’s southern roots

Jeff Delaney -it’s all a blend as far as I see it. Music has no boundaries. People have been touched by music as far back as time stretches. Ancient Irish folk music made its way to shores of Nova Scotia and New England. African rhythms made its way round the globe and blended with Appalachia etc. I love the stuff that came from up north-from Hank Snow’ the singing Ranger’ to Ian Tyson’ and Lightfoot’ to the Guess who’ and. Lenny Breau’. The Band’ is one of the my favorites. Stay safe up there my friend

Very few tributes do, Thomas. The point of a tribute--especially a live one with lots of musicians-- is not to do it better than the original artist, but to pay homage. No cover or tribute can top the original, but it's the feeling rather than pure note for note vocal imitation that makes a tribute work, and this one too. Bruce Springsteen does one, too, and he can't manage all the notes that Levon sang, and doesn't even try, but it's his regard for Levon that's clear and present. Try to enjoy it for what it is, not comparing to the master Levon.

@@liandrosmoots4931 But I didn't enjoy it. I made an observation. I stand by it. I've heard tributes and covers that I thought were better than the original. I don't know if it can be done here. Again, not because they are bad musicians, but because Levon was so good.

OK, yes, I was too fast in noting that that no covers or tributes are better than the original. You're right, some are, for sure. I do appreciate this group's effort in the tribute, and can't deny that the original was so much better; just was enjoyable for me to see so many great musicians give it a try, and even if you didn't enjoy this one, I can agree that Levon Helm was just wonderful. @@thomasflynn5366

Probably the authenticity of the music that makes the character of musicians authentic and approachable.
