The War of 1812 was a major conflict between the United States and Great Britain for control of the Northern frontier. Often described as a second War of Independence, in reality it was caused - in large part - by the ineffective foreign policies of two U.S. Presidents.
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

Far more important than people realize. 1812 established that the USA owned the Western Hemisphere and Britain had no business anywhere except Canada. 48 years later, when 11 southern states seceded from the USA and sought help from Great Britain, the USA invaded and destroyed them.

+preservingbattlefields *Thanks for a summary of American commercial hamstrings in the Napoleonic Wars.* United States merchants o' the era had little recourse to the regimes, respectively, of George IV (GBR) and the Prime Émpire (FRA) blockading each other; these wars also affected English (GBR) merchants adversely.

This was not a one sided blame game. The Brits were encouraging and arming their native American allies to raid American settlements. They also attempted to form an economic blockade with other European nations to keep the U.S. weak. And even though the Brits will never admit it, there was a hard core group in the British Parliament who had visions of a reconquest of the “colonies” as they called us at that time. But the whole war boils down to a rising power wanting to flex it’s muscle and an already established power wanting to check them. No one won, Native Americans lost.

Hmm… 1. Proceed with the Louisiana Purchase. That was a great idea. 2. Do not embargo Britain. These cause mutual misery and lead to conflict and internal strife. 3. Do not declare war on a distracted Global Power. 4. Bolster your navy and clear your domestic shipping from British harassment. Lastly, listen to our first President (Jefferson’s contemporary), and avoid foreign wars!

What's interesting to me is that The United States wanted to remain neutral on both fronts between the French and Great Britain. It was truly daunting for Thomas Jefferson to pick a side because losing support from either one would have resulted in consequences... Which I mean technically it did happen. I could be confusing with that part with the French Revolution as during this time period France, The United States, and Great Britian where at a constant dissonance with each other. Anyhow great video!

If America didn't buy the land from France, Spain likely would have. France was going to sell it to someone to fund their war against the British. America didn't want a Spanish possession next to them, so America bought it. America would have gone to war against the British either way because they didn't respect America or believe Americans could hold their own against them. American victories at Baltimore and New Orleans proved otherwise and no European army ever invaded America again.

It was because a large group of us refused to agree to pay the debt off a debt to the kings crown for the first colonies!! And the civil war wasn’t about slavery it was about the two groups of us citizens, one that agreed to pay you back the debt to the Crown ,the north , (in federal taxes )and those that said no, the sovereign citizens the south !!

It was started by the Americans. They launched three separate armies northwards to attack what is now Canada. It was a dismal disaster. Each army was confronted by much smaller Canadian/British forces, and defeated!! The Americans thought that with the British fighting for their lives against Napoleon, now was the chance to extend their empire northwards. How wrong they were. In the end, with the American navy driven out of existence, they sued for peace. Communications were very slow in those days, so, with the war actually over the Americans launched an attack at New Orleans. The result was indecisive, but the Americans did best. But the war was over, and the British allowed the Americans to have their navy back.
