Nearly all the characters in Father Ted were played by Irish stand-up comedians, quite a few of whom went on to great success in the UK on the back of the programme, The in-joke about Father Jack was that the almost monosyllabic character was played by the most accomplished actor in the cast with a long career on stage, film, radio and television.

Amazing episode! And yes I think Fr Jack's character really shines more from here on in. Frank Kelly IRL was a very affable kind of erudite man. Well respected here in Ireland for serious roles as well as comedy on radio and TV. In a sad twist of fate, he died on the anniversary of Dermot Morgan's death.

6:40 - you used to see those kinds of toilets in older (therefore smaller) houses where they would try to maximise as much space in a bathroom as possible. The cistern being raised to about head height meant that the bowl could be set a bit further back.

I watched Father Ted when it first came on British TV & was instantly hooked. I love seeing you & the Queen in absolute stitches & couldn't wait until you got to this episode, in my opinion one of the best. FYI: in the UK we say arse because pronounce ar that way, whereas in the US you say ass (however, ass is an alternate name for a donkey); shite is predominently Scottish, although it has been adopted by some in England as a way of swearing without swearing (similar to the Irish feck instead of fuck).

I know what you mean about Signs! I was away from home when I first watched that in the cinema. I was at a university open day with a couple of friends from high school. We did the open day, then had some time to kill so went to see it. It really, really scared me! My 17 year old self had never seen anything as terrifying as that before. We were then going back to the student halls to stay over for the night. We were meant to be given rooms next to each other at the student halls, which was of some comfort. But when we arrived, they didn't have enough rooms in the same corridor, so I was sent to an empty room in an empty hallway to sleep for the night. I don't think I actually slept at all that night! That film was crazy, and objectively it's not all that scary - there's not much violence or horror in it really. It's very threatening though. The fact that you don't actually get to see a clear image of the aliens is what makes it so threatening, stifling and ominous. They are always just a shadowy figure creeping around and preparing to ambush you to do awful things. Plus that clicking sound they make! Super creepy. It messed me up for weeks! I was always looking behind me, and jumping at the tiniest ambient noises.

The Cliffs of Moher are in Co. Clare, as is the Father Ted House. The interior was a set though but you can pop in for a cup of tea, but you need to book in advance. Highly recommend grabbing a ferry from Doolin over to Inis Óirr / Inisheer which is the island in the opening credits. Ye can rent bikes for €10 a day and zip about the place.
