And as a German I can tell you that these were only a few of the most beautiful castles and palaces. We have several thousand castles and a few hundred palaces in Germany.

There's a lot more Castles in Germany. Fun fact: In the seventies a part of the Marburger Schloss (3:20) was actually apartments for students who went to University there. More than 25% of Marburgs population are students. The Philips University was founded in 1527.

The best to find out how they look like from the inside is to visit Germany in the future and travel to these castles and palaces. A few of them are close to major cities with airports or bigger train stations and offering some guided tours. The most of them were built a long long time ago, which means they are pretty cold in winter times or very expensive to heat them up.

"How *do* you get up there?!" Ehrm... under observation and on a small path staring into fortified positions and taking fire the whole way?😉 While these things (castles that is, not palaces) *are* pretty, they meant to create kill zones for any attacker causing a maximum of casualties using a minimum of personell... most of these would channel attackers in a way that the whole thing could be held by 20 determined defenders over long periods of time until releived... You can find castles everywhere in germany.. in the center of germany near Göttingen almost every hill and every mountain has a castle on top :D .. Bavaria has castles that are close to the alps and very high in altitude while the castles in Nordrhine-Westphalia are mostly close to the rhine river.. Here in Northern germany you can find just a few, but they are mostly build on islands or surrounded by a deep trench :D A "Schloss" (Palace) is a residence for the king/etc. while a "Burg" (Castle) is for defending the area .. thats why they look different and have different towers :D

11:00 The Mannheim Palace has the longest "street front" of all castles in palaces in Europe with almost 450m (nearly 500 yards). The central courtyard is huge (app. 60 x 80 meters / 65 x 90 yards). When it was built they laid a high emphasis on having exactly 1 more window than Versaille. In fact, only Versailles is bigger than Mannheim. Unfortunately, the palace was almost completely destroyed in WW2 and they considered demolishing it. So what you saw in the video is an exterior reconstruction with many of the rooms inside being very plain and 50/60ies style modern. How do I know? It is one of the buildings of the University of Mannheim, where I studied.

In the city where I live we also have a castle, and in the end is e.g. Today the current university is housed, in part. So the castles are still used as restaurants as universities, and of course tours are possible. It is always very different.

What is the difference between a palace and a castle? Strictly, palaces are homes of extreme luxury, while a castle has a defensive purpose. That's why palaces can be seen in flat areas... with beautiful gardens: the purpose is to be admired. The castles have watchtowers and were built in high places to have a privileged view; difficult access and the presence of ditches eventually ensure even more security. Of course, a castle can be as luxuriousas a palace. A German castle that was built as something playful was Neuschwanstein (in Hohenschwangau) which was built in the reign of Ludwig II to have the appearance of a fairy tale castle.

At 12:20 this is the Berliner Schloss and it's new. There was an old one, but it was torn down by the GDR in 1950.

Castles are usually build on high points. First it give a sense of importance and it enables a great view which in the medieval times was importand to spot for example a fire or even a enemy army from far away. There were many Castles build at the great Rivers (Rhine, Danube ect) to collect taxes from the ships faring goods down the river. A great example is the Castle at 7:38 which had a small Fortress on the other sides of the shore where a big chain was put between the castle and the forts to prevent ships form passing until they paid the taxes. A common used strategy for controlling ships traveling the waters. This was used in Istanbul or Havanna.

Lol...nope, it isn't Schwanstein which looks like it is from a Disney movie, it's it other way around. Cinderella's Castle is based on Schwanstein. A lot of the stuff in the early Disney movies were inspired by Germany and Italy. Walt Disney travelled the countries around the time, and came back to the US with a bunch of illustrated German fairy tale books in his luggage. As inspiration.

The fortress castles were built in such difficult terrain, because they could then be defended by a relatively small regiment against a numerically much larger attacking force. The castles project power and dominance over the surrounding region; in Germany you'll find them along the rivers and overlooking the larger towns/cities. Then there's the more palace-like castles that aren't really functioning as military installations, but more a display of wealth, administration and political power. They are also much more comfortable and bright as living quaters for the rulers, compared to the dark and grim fortresses.

The names are often confusing. Burg means castle (often older and meant for Defense) and Schloß is Palace in english ( buildings like Neuschwanstein) but they never care much about these differences in their german names^^ Sometimes a castle was converted into a Palace when the defense purpose wasn't needed anymore.

Those castle roofs are so steep because of structural reasons. Structure on top had to be very light, so it's weight could be caught by the walls below which meant that roofs weren't very solid. They were made that steep so that the winter snow could slide off, because it's weight could have caused the roof to collapse. Winters in medieval times were a lot harder. Flat roofs were minimized since it meant that the foundation walls had to be a lot thicker (A few meters were already required for a multistoried building with a light roof)

3:15 the Kaiserburg in Nuremberg is where my husband proposed to me at sunrise. Compared to many of the other castles, the Kaiserburg had to get rebuild after ww2 since it’s in the center of Nuremberg, which was heavily bombarded.

They used to range chains from shore to the fortress to stop ships from passing before they payed the toll. Just unbelievable how many there are and this was only a little selection out of Germany.

I’ve been to Schloss Neuschwanstein twice (1:34) and loved it. Aside from being the inspiration for the Disney castle, the story of its construction by “Mad King Ludwig” is fascinating and he never finished it. Like many popular tourist destinations in Germany you can get guided tours in English. Be aware that in peak tourist season in the summer it is VERY busy - I would consider going there in the shoulder season!

By the way, there is a diffenrence between "Burgen" und "Schlössern"...most times Burgen were used as strongholds and as such were built to be easily defendable for example in the water, on a cliff, on Top of a mountain. Imagine having to try to take over a Castle after climbing a mountain in metal gear....Schlösser on the other hand were mostly residences built to showcase wealth and to have space for the family, servants, and the "courts" surrounding the family of wealth. Oftentimes with stables for horses. Many Castles (Burgen AND Schlösser) have been added to by new owners over the centuries so sometimes 1 Castle can have 3 different time Period specific building styles incoorporated. Don't forget the US has a very famous Schloss/Residenz too. Its Schloss White House, where the Emperor resides.

By all means there are hundrets more castles and palaces. They are everywhere! The once you see at the rivers are mostly at the rhine river or the mosel river. You can take a boat cruise and drive right past them!

That last one, "under construction" is Berliner Schloss, it was main city palace of German royals, damaged but reparable during WW2, Soviets torn it apart and build House of Republic, that new build was full of asbestos and 10 years ago decision is made to take down house of Republic and rebuild Berliner Schloss. By now, work is done and Schloss is rebuild now as Humboldt Forum, building for art, galerija and congres space.

I just visited one with my father and brother last sunday, the "Schloss Rochsburg" in Saxony.

as a rule of thumb, there are a few different types of "castles" the burg, the actual medieval fortification, housing the lord of the region, his family and his court or serving military purposes, protecting roads, a river crossing or borders and so on the festung, a large fortress, solely for military purposes the schloss, which is a post medieval recidency/palace for the nobility with no military background. after the medieval period ended a lot of burgen where transformed into schlösser, because the nobility wanted to have a little more comfort than the often cold and cramped burgen could offer. in the north east and in the parts of germany that are now poland there was a another type, the rittergut, which was some kind of a mixture of a small schloss mixed with a huge agricultural estate/farm. it was typically owned by lower nobility such as knights. pretty compareable to the plantations in the southern states actually. haw... castles are fun...

Next to Schloss Nordkirchen is a Skate Park. When i was a teenager i was there a lot and we do dumb stuff in the castle park when we drunk :D

I can recommend a trip to the south of Bavaria. Besides Munich, you can visit the Neuschwanstein Castle (template for the Disney castle) and Lake Chiemsee with Herrenchiemsee Castle. Also the longest castle in the world in Burghausen is very close to Munich.

Germany has over 20,000 castles, so this is only a tiny fraction (but of course, many are in ruins because of wars over many centuries or just because people found it convenient to use the material). It's quite typical to build them on top of mountains - much easier to defend! But if you ever visit them, don't necessarily expect that there is the original furniture inside because a lot of that was lost in time. Some of them have it, though, and that looks quite impressive :)

Germany where ruled by different empires in diferent states(Bundesland) way back middle ages or before that so that is why they have a lot of castles.

The castle you see at 12:10 is actually new built - albeit at the very location of the "original" (which was destroyed by WW II and it´s remains by the East German regime in 1950 !!!) and only the outside walls resemble the old castle ... Allother castles shown are "original" and - as you noted - kept in good condition. Some of them are still inhabitated by the families whose ancestors build them and those are usually not accessible to the public or only in part.

Those are not appartements with all the small windows, very very old houses like that, have a lot of small windows to keep out the cold and back then it wasn’t possible to make larger glass for windows. Also that is not storage space in the base of the castle haha 😂 everything in castle design always has to do with defense and fortifications. It up high so they see the enemy comming.

Schloss means palace. Burg means castle btw.

Steep roofs in old buildings are everywhere in central and north Europe becouse of winters, you dont want to see your roof collapsing under weight 4 or 5 month layer of snow :D But I guess in castles and fortresses case it was also to fortified them a bit more.

The Berlin castle (that said under construction) is a completely new replica as the original was demolished in 1950 under Communist rule (they didn’t care much for symbols of the former monarchy). As much as I can tell that was the only replica in that compilation.

Basically anything with loads and loads of windows large enough for a person to fit through is a palace. Anything with really narrow window slits, with seemingly thick walls, unadorned, often NO slits on ground level up to the second floor, that was probably a castle or fortress. A palace /Schloss was for representation and bragging rights by the nobles, definitely not for defense. A castle/ a Burg was for military defense, or at the very least, a strong point for a military force to control the immediate surrounding country side.

There are a lot more castles in Germany than you have seen in this video - these are just the big "tourist attractions". For a long time, Germany wasn't a unified country, but a agglomeration of many small kingdoms and principalities. And the easiest way for the rulers to defend their land was to build castles and watchtowers.

Steep roofs help shed snow while flat roofs are in danger of accumulating snow and thus threaten the structure under the additional weight.

The roofs have to be steep to get rid of the snow. However: 1) Some of them, especially on towers, are modern. In the Middle ages, they had flat roofs for sentries to stand on. Even if they had slanted roofs, those tended to be just wood that could be detached from the inside. The title roofing happened much later. 2) Roofing was done by men hanging in harnesses from the peak. And, yes, there were accidents. It was not the most healthy profession. By the way: having castles right in the woods, like you see often is also modern. In their own time, the trees would be cleared away from the walls. For one thing, people needed the farmland, for another, you don't wan to give your enemies any cover when they approach the walls.

Some of the ones you show were rebuilt after WW2, like Schloss Charlottenburg in Berlin

Those roofs covers are actualy all Ceramic tiles. everywhere you see that "red-ish / orange-ish" colour on the roofs .. is ceramic tiles. There are some more colours aswell like blue, black, brown, grey-ish and some beige.. It is comonly used around Europe architecture. One roof like that with ceramic tiles can resist even 200 years with no problems. My grandparents old house has a roof with old ceramic tiles that has 121 years old.

I would like to make one comment. What you see in the picture is definitely not the old German script. For explanation. The old German script was called Sütterlin. My mother could still read it quite well. At that time she was learning Sütterlin at school. The Nazis came into power and banned Sütterlin. Fraktur script was introduced. The one in your picture is Fraktur. In Germany, this is often used by neo-Nazis on banners or hoodies. Fraktur is fascist script. Unfortunately, not many of my fellow citizens know this. I don't think it's pointed out in school either.

That fucking Napoleon Bonaparte ruinet much. Some Castles got refurbished ...... so they look really new - but the french ddn´t pay :-D The buildings that "Friedrich the great" had builddet and have been ruined by the communist "Walter Ulbricht" I can not say - I think half Berlin/Potsdam was lost. Sans Soucie survived ......

I don't think a little history lesson would be bad for both of you. Of course, there were always people or employees at Bogen and of course they had to live somewhere. Most of the time they didn't live in the castle themselves, of course there were, but mostly they lived downstairs in the village or right next to the castle or whatever. And a castle was a fortification a protection against enemies. It shouldn't be taken. Because otherwise you would have lost your castle. And that's why the paths to get there are not straightforward, but very confused and very small and protected, so that you could defend yourself very well. So maybe you should already know that as a general education.
